  • 1. 1 In God our strength let us rejoice;
    To Jacob’s God let us now sing,
    2 And in our psalms, to help the voice,
    The timbrel, harp and psaltery bring.
    2. 3 The moon renewing, trumpets blow,
    And when the solemn feastings be:
    4 For Jacob’s God, long time ago,
    In Israel did this law decree.
    3. 5 This testimony He prepared,
    When Jacob came from Egypt land
    And lived where he a language heard,
    Whose words he did not understand.
    4. 6 “From burdens, and the potter's task,
    Thy hands and shoulders I did free,
    7 I helped, when thou for help didst ask.
    I heard thee from the storm,” said He.
    5. “Ev’n at the waters of debate
    I said, that I might prove thee there,
    8 O Israel, mark what I relate
    And to My words incline thine ear.
    6. 9 “Thou shalt no other gods at all,
    10 But Me, the LORD thy God, receive;
    For thee I brought from Egypt thrall,
    And will thy largest askings give.
    7. 11 “But Israel showed My words contempt;
    Of Me, My people would have none:
    12 So, to their pleasures left I them,
    Who after their own lusts are gone.
    8. 13 “Oh, had My people Me obeyed,
    If Israel had My ways pursued,
    14 I on their foes My hand had laid:
    Their haters I had soon subdued.
    9. 15 “My foes had then obeyed My pow’r,
    And I had still My folk upheld:
    16 I them had fed with purest flour,
    And with rock-honey them had filled.”

    Text: George Wither (1588-1667)
