Gulmarg means a meadow of flowers. Gulmarg is one of the most important and popular tourist destinations of Kashmir. People visit this place to experience the huge Gulmarg meadow also known as The Meadow of Flowers. It is situated in Pirpanjal Mountain range of lesser Himalayas of Indian Kashmir. Gulmarg is also known for skiing and winter sports and is also known as the winter wonderland of Kashmir.
The credit for discovering the charms of Gulmarg first time in history goes to Yousuf Shah Chak, the last Chak ruler who reigned from 1579 to 1586 AD. Gulmarg is a cup-shaped meadow on a mountain top in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, at an altitude of, 2,650 m (8,694 ft). It is a heartland of winter sports in India one of the best skiing destinations in Asia. The two-stage ropeway Gulmarg Gondola is another important attraction of Gulmarg which goes up Apharwat Top about 14000 feet above sea level. Mid-way stage of Gondola is also very beautiful and is known as Kongdoori. The ropeway ferries about 600 people per hour.
The origin of Gulmarg as the golfing centre of India goes back to the late 19th century when a 6-hole course was made in 1890-91 by Colonel Neville Chamberlain. Situated at an altitude of 2,650 m, it is the highest green golf course in the world. In 1948, the Indian Army established a ski school in Gulmarg that later became the High-Altitude Warfare School.
Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar and last 12 km is a typical hill road. Passing through dense forests of Pine and Devdar. In this video I have tried to give tips based on my huge experience about Kashmir particularly if you are planning to visit Gulmarg in Summer which is the peak tourist season in Kashmir. The video gives splendid views of Gulmarg, Tangmarg, View Point, and all nearby areas. Other important places to visit in Gulmarg can be Maharaja Palace, Maharani Temple, Alpather Lake, Bot pathri, tangmarg, Drang waterfall and Baba Rishi shrine.
