- Driller is my favorite class in Deep Rock Galactic, especially in season 4. However, I've always hated the weapons and builds for the Crispr flamethrower and Cryo Cannon, so when I found out about the corrosive sludge pump, I was hooked. This gun is super cool and are a masterclass in creativity and gameplay.
This is the most fun, funniest and most creative Deep Rock Galactic weapon, and in my opinion, one of the best. You can make single target builds, aoe builds, and it has so much depth in not only its upgrades, but its damage over time and slowdown puddle as well. This video has everything you'd want as a person wanting to learn about weapons in Deep Rock Galactic, with funny moments scattered throughout the video.
Seeing as DRG season 4 just released, and every video about DRG weapon ratings are taken. I decided to give you a rundown on the best gun in the game of Deep Rock Galactic*.

now don't get me wrong i love the sludge pump,
but wisping away 20+ gliphids in one fell swoop using heavy flamer with face Melter equipped is... quite satisfying.
Every game has their war crime class, TF2 has Pyro, Titanfall 2 has Scorch and DRG has Driller.
But remember kids, it's not a war crime if it's on aliens.
Drg actually has multiple warcrime classes. The engi using the Big One, the Driller with the Sludge Pump, the Gunner using neurotoxin rounds on the Thunderhead, and the scout maxing out charged shot damage. Being able to take off a third of a boss's health with a charge shot has gotta be a warcrime.

Driller has two modes - the everyman, and the full-area build. There is no in-between.
But what about the melee angry dwarf punch knife ears in the face build?

The decision to make 1 shot from the sludge pump kill a grunt was the best possible idea the game's Devs have every made. Yeeting a shot across the map to snipe a grunt is amazing. Also if is disgusting against Betcy.

i noticed you talked about the cryo-cannon with the collette wave cooker, but in tier five, the cooker has an upgrade (contagion transmitter) that allows it to do 30 percent more damage to corroded targets, very useful for opressors and dreadnaughts, because the wave cooker ignores armor.
He also pretended the upgraded charge shot damage was its base 😅
Subata with Neuro-Corrosive Toxic Catalyst are also worked it too

And the damage multiplier from the focus lens OC adds its x1.5 damage multiplier with the corrosive x1.3 multiplier for a x1.95 multiplier.

Honestly I like all Driller primaries. Sludge Pump is great and all.
The Crspr is pretty fun because its somewhat strong compared to how most videogame flamethrowers are. Plus finding out that robots overheat and explode when set on fire is pretty nice mechanic too. I like how it can be modified to act in different ways from setting bugs on fire or creating a wall of fire.
The crayocannon is a lot of fun too because of the extra damage frozen enemies take and how it instakills flying enemies when they're frozen cuz they shatter when they hit the ground. Also the fact that you can neutralize exploders too when frozen, which also includes bulk detonators!
Plus some od the overclocks where you fire snowball or an ice spike are pretty awesome.
friendly reminder 10:13 that the sludgepump does not deal any direct damage. hitting a dreadnought or any other enemy in their weakspot does nothing (same goes for wavecooker). this is also why a sludgepump driller is so incredibly good at taking dreadnought agro, you can hit them anywhere on their body and do full dmg.
Finally someone mentions the fact sludge pump can damage anything that isn’t invulnerable to all threats physical or magical anywhere on the body. Also another thing to note is that the corrosion damages all amour that can be so it’s the go to for naked bugs.

You mentioned a problem with the secondaries options for the Sludge Pump, but I think you are forgetting some perks on the EPC and Wave Cooker:
- EPC: Tier 5 perk 1 Burning Nightmare allows you to set the sludges on fire, adding burning damage to the other types of damage you're already dishing out to the bugs. EPC with Heavy Hitter OC can ignite the puddles in 1-2 shots. Its a LIT combo!
- Colette Wave Cooker: Tier 5 perk 1 Contagion Transmitter will make so the cooker cooks 30% more cookings for the bugs with a corrosive dot, plus it has a 10% chance of affecting a bug and its surroundings with neurotoxin for every ammo spent (this can happen even if the bug isn't been corroded). You can take the Gamma Contamination OC if you want to fill your entire screen with status icons, Diffusion Ray OC to make your rays penetrate through bugs (very ammo efficient) or Blistering Necrosis OC, a very team-focused OC that will dish LOTS of damage, even on dreadnoughts
"Sludge blast" overclock does wonders on dreadnaughts. Their vulnerable phase lasts about 5 seconds if you consistantly shoot charged shots at them. My regular build to fight them is 12222 or 11222 with this OC, highly recomended!
What I really love about this Wepaon is the versatility of the builds.
Let me explain:
the CRSPR is basically either Sticky flames or Raw damage, and not being very good against bosses.
Cryo is also just for Area control. It can be useful against bosses with snow ball and ice spear, it's mostly the same play style.
The Sludge pump however got an overclock for every situation: playing Salvage Operation and you need to protect the transmitter , or maybe you need to protect Hack-C in IS? Then go Goo bomber with all for slowdown and puddle size/life span, it'll shut down any swarm coming at you. What if you wanna damage the Caretaker? Use AG mixture and just snipe him (and even the turets) across the map. Playing Elimination? Use Sludge Blast. I love seeing 1/5 of a Twin's health disappear in a single charge shot. And much more!
But honestly this depends on preference...

has everyone forgotten how OP cryo plus axe cancels are? sludge pump is the best on its own for bosses but cryo is genuinely the best option when considering the context of driller's entire kit
Let me be the devil's advocate and say:
Flamethrower is probably the best for caretaker mission since you can essentially trivialize claws
true that actually
cryo can snipe with ice spear, cryo can insta-freeze a swarm, cryo can shred through bosses with ice storm, or take out huge chunks of health with ice spear + melee vampire build
You're neglecting that:
Both the flamethrower and the cryocannon can put lingering burning/freezing effects on the ground
And that the flamethrower flames spread from bug to bug, making it INCREDIBLY effective against crowds, especially with the fear effect letting the DOT safely inflict its full damage
Yeah I was wondering if he was going to mention that. Sludge pump is undoubtedly the worst for crowd control compared to the others. Damage? That’s a fat MAYBE. Sticky flames though it’s not even fair, it deletes entire waves of grunts while only using like 10 ammo or less of its 300+.

@@VoidHxnterExcluding sticky fuel (potentially the best OC in the game and has been for years), the sludge pump actually has the best crowd control. Disperser compound and goo bomber special are both phenomenal for this, and all the other overclocks (yes, even sludge blast) can do the same thing, just with less effectiveness.
@@dukecatfishjunior6291because the increased flamethrower range is really powerful. It doesn't come into play in lower levels, but in high level gameplay you want to be able to support teammates from a distance. Plus, sticky flames cover some of your downtime and thus reloading often is less of a vulnerability. The same is true for the sludge pump, which is why people rarely take the magazine size upgrade for that too (also there's some cheeky charge shot stuff that can be done better with a lower mag size).
The sludge pump is what is keeping me playing as Driller, very fun and destructive. Good video

I also can't help but notice that you haven't even purchased Triple Filtered Fuel on tier 2 of the flame thrower. Sticky Fuel aside, the real strength of the flamethrower is not direct damage (Facemelter is kinda bad, tbh). It's the fact that it can set and spread fire incredibly quickly, which is one of the most powerful status effects in the game.
For example, many people tout Facemelter for Industrial Sabotage missions, when in fact 22331 Fuel Stream Diffuser is by far the best build for those.

Because if I’m meant to carry lobbies I wouldn’t use dump pump. I’d bring crispr with double heat generation + both ammo mods + ammo oc. You can skip resupplies while still being the most valuable player.

Technically the sludge pump can also do fire damage since the goo can be set on fire (not sure if you mentioned it or not). Goo bomber special and the plasma pistol create acidic fire walls.

the sludgepump was the first gun I unlocked and I instantly fell in love with it and it still is my favorite weapon even though I use the cryo canon a lot
The sludge pump (my high school nickname) really shines in Haz 5 I’ve found. The DPS is insane, and since there are always hordes about, it’s the clear winner for Driller, and the team for that matter. It frees up the rest of the team to complete objectives and pick off stragglers, while also conserving their ammo immensely. My first 10 Haz 5 missions all had drillers with sludge pump exclusively, because it’s just that good
0:49 yes it may be weak in solo, but with a full squad you can shred bosses. And on top of that cryo works on bosses like omen and bet-c (the frozen icon isn't wisible but they damage multiplier is still there)

Great video m8 as someone that hasn't hopped on deep rock for a while I want to go back and now try some more sludge pump.
Just to suggest a few things( just in case):
You should try tier 5B on the flamethrower ( the one that makes bugs explode when dying to Direct damage), even though it's not as consistent as heat radiance it is DAMN satisfying to use. It's like having praetorian gas explode when you kill any enemy, you've just got to focus a bit more on direct damage.
With the cryo cannon: the overclock ice spear is a GOD! on single Target/ boss fights that plus freezing the enemy or the Contagion boils overclock on the wave cooker will delete big enemies while still having pretty good freeze power with smaller enemies. Pretty decently satisfying combo. Maybe snowballs pretty good at bosses with the thaw delay (got to test that).
(And just in case) tip: don't forget ground puddles on the cryo cannon freeze most walking bugs a hell of a lot faster, it's good to treat it as if it was sticky Flames on the flamethrower or aiming for the feet of bugs as it will pass through them and still create a puddle.

Finally, some sludge pumpaganda! I love this gun so much, and you haven't even touched on the pure team-saving capability! It doesn't require loadout coordination, but if someone's struggling within goo shot range, just shoot a charge shot in their general direction, you're sure to take some pressure off right away, maybe even save them from going down. It also works on the ghost fyi, you too can make the unknown horror move at half speed, really neuters the threat it represents. Plus, it's driller's most capable DPS weapon when using the Volatile Impact Mixture overclock, my go-to for industrial sabotage and extermination alike. And then there's the AG compound, what if driller had long-range capabilities? That'd be messed up right? Well you totally can and it's so funny.
fun fact, Goo Bomber overclock was so fucked when it got released, it melted dreadnaughts in seconds because every puddle dealt separate damage and this was insane and fun at the same time (:
This is all well and good, and while I can’t argue against the effectiveness of the sludge pump, the sheer war crime feeling of the flamethrower means it’ll always be my personal favorite
honestly just for looks, sound design, and general vibes sludge pump is my fav weapon but its also super fun to use
It's also the only driller primary that pairs well with steeves since it won't freeze or burn them.
My go to combo with the sludge pump is disperser compound with persistent plasma burning hell plasma gun, you forgot to mention that puddles can actually be lit on fire, and the plasma gun serves as sort of a weird kame-hame-ha with area denial/weak target cleaner hybrid, on top of the already pools of sludge all over the place, it's quite the caotic combo would highly recommend
Something to note, the T2 mods for area damage and fragment count actually match each other on damage numbers, so it's mostly down to preference. Damage is useful for getting more guaranteed kills and just killing individual enemies faster with something like disperser, while the fragment count is better for afflicting more enemies at once and, TECHNICALLY, can deal more damage overall due to the additional puddles and chances to apply the dot. I personally run the additional fragments more often, as it's better for goo bomber special, and is pretty similar in performance to damage with the other overclocks. However, it's obviously up to you.
1300 hour greybeard here. You missed the bit where you can set the sludge puddles on fire, which pairs well with the EPC secondary fire upgrade, or another flame driller.
Good goo gun build for dread or anything you want to evaporate with just pure chunk munching damage is the volatile impact mixture overclock for sludge and blistering necrosis for the wavecooker.
Essencially you can make the charge shot do 120 dmg (just the main glob) and if you spray the enemy full of blisters each blister does 120 dmg + an extra 40 i think for every single blister you hit as they break instantly. The blisters do some dmg when broken, it's a pretty small amount and they get broken by other explosives too, but they don't multiply the explosions dmg so someone shooting with a turrer whip, water gorilla, grenade launcher, shard diffractor, C4, Autocannon, hurricane rocket launcher literally just wastes the entire thing with anything that isn't the sludge pump or I guess Scouts M100

just passed the 100 hours and is crazy how well you understand the game, i can do solo hazard 4 missions wich is impresive i think? but i do not understand the game as well as you do, not even close, also god i want an overclock for the sludge pump.

Driller was definitely the class I was like, "no way my other weapons can top this" with all of his primaries lol the opposite of gunner where I was like, "this is cool, but it doesn't beat the minigun" with his other guns

Hey why is your 2nd perk fast revive on your solo missions? Shouldn't it be heightened senses/dash/vampire/berserker?
Sludgepump is ridiculous when paired with bunkering as well. When your team is playing high hazard or trying to conserve ammo, the driller can drill into a wall and just use sludgepump whenever there is a wave.
With no clip size mods you can shoot 8 shots by doing: reg, charged, reg, charged, reg, charged, reg, charged. The sludge pump doesn’t NEED 5 ammo to do a charged shot, meaning 1 can equal 5
I do enjoy both the flamer and the sludge pump, and I can say that the flamer can be very satisfying when built right, although it does want to lean on combos.
IMO, while sticky flames is insanely ammo efficient, its just not so fun, especially after I spent my first 25 driller levels running sticky flames and the oc that reduces range but increases ammo, so I tend to run the Facemelter overclock now that I have it unlocked, with no sticky flame upgrades and the upgrade that lets enemies explode on death. Its less reliable than Heat Radiance, but goddamn is it satisfying to kill a grunt and have your own mini preatorian cloud explosion every single time. I tend to run it with either the automatic fire subata with the increased dmg to burning targets OC, or the wave cooker to spam out temp shocks on the big boys.
i do play driller and i use sludge pump. but i prefer this combo:
sludge pump: 3 1 1 1(you can 2 if you wanna) mainly last one is 2. use clean (safe) overclock for increased additional corosive dmg. by that way, you do a lot DPS by corosive damage which lasts really long.
as secondary i use wave cooker (microwave gun) for additional DPS for it last upgrade which makes ALSO additional damage against corroded targets when shot (toxic dmg) with unstable overclock to get change to radiate enemies.
i go 2 1 1 2 1 personally.
by this build you will be shooting a lot with charged shots slowing enemies when hit, also slowing enemies whem they walk on puddle, with hight corrosive dmg which lasts really long and do extra dmg with toxic and radiation by microwwave gun.
you will see that enemies will gonna have total of 5 debuff icon above their healthbars and watching them slowly painfully disintegrating without being able to move, pinnig almost every enemy locked in place especially for praetorians, oppresors, dreathnouts or detonators. about small glyphids? yeah they will be gone.
When I first started I really hated flamethrower and cryo and loved the pump. However after passing around blue level 80 I started loving flamethrower and cryo and just don’t like sludge anymore. I’m curious to see if this creators opinion will change like mind did

Ice spear overclock for cryo cannon is decent against bosses dealing around half of engi's hyper propellant damage, snowball cryo overclock is like sludge pump but more team support
the cryocanon is great against bosses with one of the unstable overclock, shreds through the omen tower like a hot knife through butter

Funfact about the Cryo Cannon, Ice Storm has higher damage output than Face Melter so it is better than the flamethrower for bosses. I also find it largely being a question of do I want my fun weapon (sludge) or my clean weapon (cryo). Flamethrower is more of a niche weapon with Bots exploding when ingited, the flamestream penetrating Rockpox enemies, and the strata-specific bugs and Mactera taking more damage from fire (if only the ice could melt faster than it does).
Personally I'd say the flamethrower is the best weapon for driller simply cause I don't focus on dmg. I see driller as more of a support class and sticky fuel is way more effective that the cyro imo. Sludge is a good middle ground between dmg and crowd control but isn't as ammo efficient as the flamer. Also funny warcrime.

Temperature shock is a consolation prize for uncoordinated teams, and not worth building around. 9 times out of 10 it would be better if the bug just stayed frozen or ignited.

Just recently started using this beast. I thought it was janky at first but realized with a good build you can dominate all the mobs. I actually beat the engy in kills. You know your load out is working when you can top the engy.
Cryo is actually the best thing against bosses, but not on its own

You're right it's obvious, you take the less ammo. Being able to go 25% longer without a resupply in a 4 person game is huge, and stacked with a good secondary means you can skip resupplies while still having the highest kill count, eat your heart out Engineers.
Also the base charge time is pretty good, I can't think of any reason why you would need it other than for Sludge Blast (which even still the cost reduction is really good). I can only think of about 3 times where I wished I had a faster charge time; almost all the rest were just me not noticing or being ready for the bugs.
Good to see the sludge pump being enjoyed.
However
There are many things that miss the spot about cryo but I am not going to explain every single detail, some stuff are simply requiring more testing of it from you.
Snow ball and ice spear, these are must try.
Trowing an axe on a frozen oppressor will always feel satisfying to me.
As much as one shotting a frozen praetorian with ice spear.
And Driller is the best class for swarmers, shockers etc.
All your primaries can deal with them without using a lot of ammo.
Your drills are very good at killing shockers, their breeder version and shredders.
And the colette wave cooker is the best weapon in the game to deal with them. Especially if you take tier 5B (the upgrade that can make enemies explode when they die)
you forgot DPS(Shatter/Damage)/Ice Storm for the cryo cannon, there are 3 styles
you get it
I like Driller’s first two weapons over the sludge pump. They’re so incredibly ammo efficient compared to the sludge pump. Sure, the sludge pump has good single target damage, but so does the Cryo cannon with thermal shock or icicle/snowball. The sludge pump also does good AOE and crowd control, but the CRSPR does that even better. With the right mods, you can make it do the same or more DPS as well as slowing down enemies.
The only thing I ever use the sludge pump for is solo dreadnoughts. In multiplayer, you burn through ammo way too quickly, running out of ammo when the boss is only half health in 4 player missions. In that case, I’d use Cryo cannon with icicle and coordinate my freezes with the gunner for massive bursts of damage. If everyone goes down, I can spam icicle.
Note how I said specifically *dreadnoughts* earlier. This is because Cryo cannon icicle does a ludicrous amount of damage to the caretaker. Only two or three shots and you killed a phase. Combine that with your secondary, and you can kill it extremely quickly.
If you're at all obsessed with fire in any situation. The flame thrower in this specific game will give you a smile if you give a moment to look at what you're shooting instead of just shooting bugs. Brings a smile to me at least

I’m so glad to see the sludge pump get the recognition it deserves. My favorite part of it is the sheer amount of ammo economy the sludge pump gives especially combined with a tunnel, one charged shot can clear an entire wave on its own. Also the combined slow and dot from corrosion, the puddles and neurotoxin, it lets you kill an oppressor head on before it can move 10 meters. Not to mention the slows let you blast absolutely everything with the subata for some of the highest dps in the even among the other classes all while using only secondary ammo and even not that much. Also not even mentioning how useful deleting all armor on the bugs are
Hm, I’ve always seen the sludge pump having the worst ammo efficiency, at least on its own. CRSPR’s sticky flames is so ammo efficient it’s not even funny, and Cryo cannon is pretty average for ammo efficiency. Sludge pump though, when playing on higher difficulties it’s really hard to keep ammo. There’s so many large groups of grunts that you just burn through ammo. CRSPR and Cryo scale pretty well with that situation.
@@VoidHxnter It mainly depends if you’re using mainly the direct hit damage or the poison and puddles. I never hit a bug I already goo’d again with the sludge pump unless I’m reapplying the poison when it’s gonna run out or I’m doing a charged shot to make sure a big bug or a cluster is walking across a puddle and I do the extra slowdown on the poison (or extra duration I forgot the exact one) upgrade so one one shot/puddle can 1 shot a grunt. And anytime I need single target damage instead of waisting a ton of sludge ammo just blast thier crit with the subata
@@llllTatollll I do that strategy but I still run out of ammo when I normally wouldn't with the flamethrower. Then again I also mix the subata in with flamethrower so that helps with the ammo management. I dunno, comes down to playstyle over base function I guess.
@@VoidHxnterFor me, they're all really ammo efficient. I mainly find myself running out of secondary first, so I am very liberal with primary ammo. Only exceptions are face melter, ice storm, and sludge blast as dreadnought builds. They're fun to use, but good god do they run your nitra dry quickly.
@@jonathannash8471 This was before the subata changes were present, so now I do use the sludge pump a bit more now that I can have some pretty good Subata synergy.

The more I play the game the more I enjoy all of drillers guns... *except the EPC*. But imo, all of drillers primaries are super fun. I used to not rly like the flamethrower but after getting Face Melter... ooh boy das a lotta damage! And with cryo, Snowball and Ice Spear rly shakes up the gameplay and makes it rly cool... I didnt even intend on that pun. And sludge is prob my favorite without overclocks.
I feel like the plasma hurricane has the most damage per bullet I’m relation to it’s ammo count. I’m always the last to need a resupply yet Im still the main dps. Highly recommend it with neurotoxin revolver or high damage burst pistol

I’m a driller main and I choose nothing but driller items out of sheer principle. I have less than 10 minutes on other classes and 300+ hours on driller.

Personally I love the Sludge Pump! I went through the motions as I upgraded my Driller; "Oh you know flamthrowers are neat", or "hey the cryo cannon is better".
Sludge pump hell nah, this pump is KING and GREEN. My favorite overclock is the AG Mixture, because my only serious weakness is just range, and BOY do I love tap firing on those bastards on the roof and walking away from them as they die. So deliciously criminal.
