Hey Folks, you may be aware that I have been working on some research for the main Antikythera project over the last few months. So far so good on that front, although I may yet have to divert some more time back into it in the future, we'll see how it goes. The purpose of this 2nd channel is that I figure there are a lot of people on CZcams who don't yet know that they love machining who probably skip right past a 20 minute video. So this new channel is all short clips, to see if I can rope in those potential viewers. Its mostly old content presented in a much shorter format, so if you've been watching for a while you will already have seen most of the material. But if you have the time and interest, head on over and give it a sub and maybe share a few of the clips.

when you finished the first snake I was very impressed with the intricate details, hand engraving, hand twisting and polish... but when you made a second matching one I immediate thought "he is a witch".
Yes - making 1 fairly complex 3d curve is hard. Making a second one match is BRUTAL

I had that moment when he hand-engraved the whole plate. I was completely expecting something like photoresist with the way he drew it out on paper first.

This reminds me of the age of artisans from antiquity. It’s truly the kind of thing an archaeologist would find and the world would marvel at. The hand carving, the hand bending on the snakes, the perfect surface polish.. all down to the 2 side screws even lining up with a vertical drive slot.
That was unreal, I don’t think I’ve seen a more superbly crafted, filmed, and edited piece of art. All around amazing. The pieces themselves were so perfect it looked like computer renderings.

I watch a lot of CZcams for how-to videos and channels with makers. I am usually very appreciative of the content put out by others and what I have learned through this platform, but rarely am I in awe. This video was an exception. The craftsmanship here is amazing. Instantly subbed.

20 minutes of picking my jaw up off the floor and putting my eyes back in their sockets over and over again! There are a bunch of full length videos I'd love to see in here about the engraving process and tools, that plating setup and process, the dark silver finish, even just a stream of consciousness while sketching the pattern on the top of the plate. Learned a ton from this overview, but walked away with so many more questions. Thanks!

The consistency of that engraving when you're making helixes is maddening. 😀 I loved watching you make the first snake and logo, but the process you used on the second set really interested me.

The love and attention you show here, the craftsmanship, and the way it keeps amazing me how somebody can start of with a few pieces of metal and transform it into something so beautiful.

if anyone is wondering what this device is used for, here is an explanation:
Playing card presses have been around for more than a century. Early playing cards were very expensive and were made of poor quality paper that would easily warp after a few uses. To protect the cards and keep them flat these types of card presses were invented. Many different models were manufactured out of different materials and many of them were intricately designed. As the quality of cards improved the demand for these presses dwindled. Modern card presses are used by card players who live in very humid climates and magicians who prefer using playing cards that are completely flat.
Thank you, that's about what I thought it's purpose was, but it's nice to have the confirmation.
I'd say card presses are used by gaff makers more often than by people in humid climates, but good enough introduction nonetheless.
Also, the original intent was to prevent marking cards by cardsharpers by notching, folding edges etc.

I was just beginning to appreciate this dudes talent and then I saw the amateur move of cutting the serpents in two pieces instead of weaving them through crossholes before forming them to final shape (yyyeah, right). Had someone showed me these works and told me it was done all by hand, I would have called BS as I didn't realize such a Master Craftsman still existed these days. This is by far the most inspiring work I've ever seen. Ever. You are amazing! Thank you for sharing this video! I never knew what a Playing Card Press was and I still don't, but I want this one!

I see Jewelers and clock makers, as needing similar skill sets to machinists and like metalworkers, except jewelers and clockmakers have a bit more patience and a few more magnifying glasses.
there is nothing more mesmerizing than to see a true master craftsman push the envelope and create a piece that the only description you'll be able to say is "Jewelry" for a card press.

I've watched this video 3 or 4 times now, and I still can't figure out the spacial awareness necessary to get the snakes into the correct formation so you can make it work.

The bit you don’t see is him testing the form with a wire first but nonetheless it’s still incredible seeing what he does

Yes there are methods to all this that he doesn't entirely show. He probably is comparing to a wire frame like the other comment said. But that doesn't take away from how masterfully crafted this all is.
Just shows how much knowledge and passed down wisdom you need to get to this level. Heck even small things like how he filed a perfectly square, perfect straight hole for that handle, like I don't even know how he did that by hand.
I know how he did the 2nd one, he just snapped his fingers 👍

I love watching the lathe parts where I lose a sense of scale, then when he comes in for the hand work I realize it's been like #6 threads all along!
i know! the camera helps lose any sense of scale, making it look like he just milled a piece of 2" steel bar, and then you find out outs just a little screw, or pommel cap.

As an old retired tool & die maker, I love to see pieces like this. For me to make something this complicated (or not) it would have to be for myself or a very close family member. Thank you for sharing this with us. It's an inspiration.

I’m a powdered metal die setter and work with tool and die makers.
Nowadays they use EDMs for most of the complicated stuff.

I skipped to the end of the video because I mainly wanted to know what this thing was for, and when I saw the plate I figured it was CNC'd. Saw your comment and had to go back and watch. Unbelievable!
I'm not sure which is more impressive, hand drawing the design, or engraving it. Both exceed my skill levels by multiples normally only used in calculating distances between galaxies!

So I’m watching him draw this beautiful design on paper, and then when he laser prints it on a transparency I think “cool, He’s going to acid etch the design, there’s no way even Chris can hand engrave all of ...” well, shit. How many previous lives do you have to go without caffeine to have hands this steady? Dude’s a wizard.

I am speechless. I go to an art college and have seen so many beautiful old masterpieces and works of art and this belongs right up there with them. All the renaissance carvings and stone engravings take so much time, patience, artistry, and talent, and you are doing the same just with modern tools and material; not even mentioning all the mathematical precision for planning and the chemistry knowledge that comes with dealing with different solutions and plating.
