For the past almost decade, beans have been almost 100% of my proteins, from the obvious black bean patties to tofu, so sweet beans felt like a very weird crossover, but gotta say its delicious! Red bean mochi, tofu cheesecakes etc, are all divine! Theres no 'beany'taste but rather a very rich and creamy quality to the texture. Would totally reccomend.

In the Dominican Republic we actually make something called Habichuelas con dulce (rough translation: candied beans). Usually during April around Easter, so it has some festive/religious connotations. We take red beans and cook them, smash them/put them through mixer, strain through colander a few times, then put it to cook slowly with spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, sugar and then we also add coconut milk, evaporated milk, raisins and cubed sweet potato until it’s all cooked and a thick soup. We top it off with special cookies on top for some crunch and some people even add bread and let it soak in the mixture. Although I love it hot and fresh off the stove, a lot of people also enjoy it chilled and cold. You clings eat it like soup too in a bowl and with a spoon (although I’ve seen some people chug it down like it is hot chocolate 😂)

My tip is to use red kidney beans instead of the little adult beans. They are just the same but there's less bean-to-skin ratio! Also, you can get them cheaply in tins, ready cooked if you don't want the extra work of soaking and cooking.

Maybe I should try it again because I tried it ones and it was from a supermarket so I don’t know if that was the problem because what I ate had a sugary red bean taste and I tasted mint in it but it said it was just red bean paste so I don’t really know how it supposed to taste.

I’m American, but have been learning a lot recently about East Asian (particularly Chinese as I am learning Mandarin) culture. So I’m curious for anyone who can answer, Is this the same kind of red bean paste that’s used in mooncake? I’ve been meaning to make them and this looks like the same stuff.

I tried cooking sweet red beans once on the stove top. My pan was too small and I cooked them for 4 hours and they were still very firm. I started to feel a little crazy after a while lol
