Thanks Jan Scheltes I have an isolation transformer. On the isolated side of the transformer I have a VARIAC. I have used light bulbs before and they were quite well. But today I always use an isolation transformer and a VARIAC.
Thanks SpeakerFreak95 You didn't know you are giving me not only a radio but test equipment also. I think the weather will be much nicer tomorrow so I think I'll go down to the flea market.
I like the way how you show the schematic diagram in conjunction with the radio and the corresponding components you are describing and testing. I have learnt a lot how to find out if the local oscillator works and how to test with a simple portable radio as a "help" to find it. Thank you very much for this wonderful tutorial and practical lesson.
Interesting vid...I've been restoring radios for a long time, and I've never had an open resistor that didn't look damaged. I guess it just goes to show that anything is possible! This video also points out something else useful; for basic radio troubleshooting, no fancy test equipment is necessary, just a simple multimeter works fine.
Rick my dad gave me a inop Silvertone 100.195 chassis #. radio 40 years ago. I recently just finished all the electrical repairs and it now works perfectly. I'm a little slower with my repairs than you are!! It had a bad winding on the oscillator coil. I was lucky in that I only had to unwind one turn to find the open. I wish I had known this trick with the transistor radio to determine oscillator function. Thanks for this series on these repairs. They are very helpful.
I first noticed what you just demonstrated years ago. One of the radios was connected to the TV cable because they carried FM radio in the area at that time. It was about the only way to get excellent FM reception in the area.
Yes Daniel, from the bottom view the pins count clockwise. I do have the bottom view of several tube types in my e-book, in the appendix. This is a free e-book and you can find a link on my CZcams channel. I like your workbench by the way, very nice set up.
Verry nice work detective Rick as good as you are with radios. I bet you would make a verry good Teacher. I have and all ways do learn from you sir.I would have pulled out all the hair on my head over that dot not being there
yup 8.2k was open most common thing in those old tube sets. i used to work on many sets in the 70s up 80s up .did tv repair ham sets cb amps. wide range learned a lot had much fun.
Hello, Thank you for this very instructive video. I've got a question. Did you power the radio up directly to the net or through a series lamp? Regards, Jan (The Netherlands)
Hi allamericanradio5 I have been a subscriber of yours for a while now and finally got around to uploading a video of something I inherited from my grandad of which he used to listen to India on , if you could tell me more about that would be amazing , I have no idea what kind of antenna I would need to get it working , also not sure if it runs on 240v or lower. Keep up the great work ! Thanks
thanks so much for this video. please if possible please keep these kinds of vides going i so much enjoyed them i would is there anyway you would consider doing a series of these ?? I hope you would. Wonderful Great Job..
The best that I can tell, is that it looks military, and from the label looks like it was a tube set. From the video it looks like it still has one tube and it has been transistorized. That's about all that I can say about it without drawing up the wiring diagram. And since it is a custom modification to learn more about this unit you would need to draw up the wiring diagram.
I like the transistor radio.trick, hopefully It I ever need it will work for me ,I bought a little radio I.keep next to my work area.either way Learn something new thanks.

Had a fisher 500s with an open oscillator secondary transformer, removed silver mica, replaced with mica caps ,had to “unwind secondary about 20 feet to find the open winding resoldered had my oscillator! Albeit a bit off freq
Thanks Jan Scheltes

I've had a few open circuit resistors

Great work. You are an inspiration to us all. Thanks for your hard work in not only repair the radio, but in videoing the process. Ron in Putnam, Tx
Thanks DENNIS N
it is handy easy to use, and it works 100% of the time.
Hi Rick, another very good instructional video with some very good tips
All the best ... Andy
thank you for sharing this seems like I run into more problems with resistors from the late fifties too early sixties than any other era
Great photography, great material too....thank you. Can't wait for the alignment video.
Fantastic, I learned a new trick with this video to tell how the oscillator is working. Thank you for posting this video. :)
Thanks
This is an excellent video. Your video techniques are very, very good.
Good catch on that wiring diagram snafu! Good tip on the oscillator check too. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks
Thanks ranuts2
I just bought a new camera, and the macro is really good.
Good information for us new guys... thanks for sharing your troubleshooting methods.

I really enjoy your videos keep them coming and thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Thanks Richard, clear explanation, as you always do
Thank you, and your welcome!

Hello,

I've got a question. Did you power the radio up directly to the net or through a series lamp?

I have learnt a great deal from your videos, thanks for presenting them on You Tube, looking forward to the alignment one!
I guess Im kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good site to stream new tv shows online?
@Gregory Kyler Flixportal =)
@Santiago Micah thanks, I went there and it seems to work :D I really appreciate it !
@Gregory Kyler You are welcome :D
A nice simple solution and some good troubleshooting tips! I heard you get WLW on that, are you close to Cincinnati?

Excellent video. Thanks for the troubleshooting hints.
Thanks Matt Patoray
I'm in North Carolina close to Raleigh
Nice work bud . if i find a connection that i can touch and find a mains hum would it be ok to insert a normal line feed from a line out source ?
thanks so much for this video. please if possible please keep these kinds of vides going i so much enjoyed them i would is there anyway you would consider doing a series of these ?? I hope you would. Wonderful Great Job..
Hi Rick, do the pin numbers always go clockwise when viewing from the bottom? Awesome video!
A novice like myself wouldnt have found that problem ,nice save great video.
Thanks
This radio is AM only. However the interference would also work if you put two FM radios close together.
Thanks L0WRYDER
I taught software for over 10 years.

Liked and subscribed, thanks for the oscillator tip, very handy.
Thanks..........Ray H (From the U.K.)

Thanks Dennis Hill
Absolutely the best videos on this subject.
Thanks Norman Walz
Nice video Rick. Thanks for posting.
That feeling never gets old .
Thanks Jjames Anderson
small transistor radios are also a good way to test car remotes...held close to the antenna they. make static if emitting something.
Thanks Andy
Thanks Ron Pearson
Usefull video, thanks!
THANK YOU!
lindo vídeo muy instructivo thanks
Thanks AMStationEngineer
Stranger things have happened. The worst is a new part being bad.
Thanks Douglas Tees
Great Video, Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Thanks
Great Video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Galo Freire
Great
remember doing it when I was a kid two radios side by side but didnt know what i was doing other than playing a noise
Hello, I'm watching from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Do you know a good AM tube radio Kit to recommend ?
