Amen to the headphones. Not only do they literally block out distracting noises, but they help create a psychological barrier that separates me from the distracting hustle and bustle of the office.

What I found though is that these are vital for me to survive co-workers and bosses react hostile about them because they don't understand the issue. I used to work in an office situation where my boss was tutoring his son doing homework. I found myself answering the questions in my head because I cannot shut out noise.

When I bring up these types of things to bosses I've had, they just say that the open office is just the way it is and that I'd get used to it. My current boss sees extroverted behaviors as areas that I can grow in. It would be nice if our society valued introverts and not just introverts that pretend to be extroverts.

As an introvert, I totally agree. Open office setting, group work, meetings, distractions... Complete nightmare 😣 I work in a fairly extroverted job, so frequent breaks are crucial. The headphones are definitely a lifeline- white or background noise really help me focus.

I loath open floor plan offices. The worst part is when you are constantly in someones line of sight that sits on the other side of the cube wall. I find that to be very unnatural and distracting. I wish I had an old school cube with taller walls.

OMG now I understand WHY I have been so shy for very long at work. I perform poorly when other people are listening to me making calls at work and are constantly giving criticism of what I do. Also, I now understand why I was not good at sales but still love marketing. I like to get some private space, work alone, get things done in my own terms rather than having people dictate to me how I should act like them (even though it might not work for me).
At one point I was asking myself what was wrong with me, and I never knew I was just a professional introvert! Thank you for this video girl!

Fantastic video! I work in an relatively open space office and the people around me are often in skype calls and talking loudly so I can't focus. There are three things I do to deal with that and get my work done: 1) Headphones 2) I come in early (7:30) to get a good chunk of work out of the way before everyone else comes in between 8 and 9. 3) I block conference/meeting rooms when I really need to be alone and away from everyone else to my work done. I love that I have the chance to do that at my office but I wish we had one or two designated non-desk work areas because a change of environment can be really helpful too.

  • @PotatoBearRawr

The point about compensation is really good. As an introvert I need time to both warm up and cool down on each side of high social stress (there are other people around, they are talking to me), so if you start counting in the time spent warming up and cooling down, then you might actually get a better final hourly wage based on working for less, but needing to spend less of your free time preparing for work or just sitting at home after with a need to do nothing (like REALLY nothing, stare into a blank wall style of nothing) and think about nothing.
Getting a nice work environment with the flexibility that you need is a luxury, and luxury cost money, but we all really need certain personal luxuries if we are to perform optimally. Adaptation is important as employees, but a really good employer also adapts the workplace, so they can get the absolute most out of their employees.
Taking a job with lower pay (but makes you more effective) might also give you options for improvement, which could lead to better career options. But as an introvert you also need to interact with your coworkers, or you lose your feel for what is going on, you might become isolated, and therefore easier to fire that someone as part of a social group, if the company needs to lay off a single employee. Therefore, I think it is very important to stress the cost-benefit balance between compensation and environment has a lot more depth than even this... But this is a very nice start :)

When people see I have it on, they don't try to talk to me. Sometimes I might cheat a little and put it on even if I'm not on a call meeting, just so I can get "professional introvert" work done :')

  • @saramations
    @saramations Před 6 lety +3

    Great video and tips.
The only thing that's missing is the deffiniton of an introvert-- it's too commonly misunderstood. So I'll define it for anyone one scrubbing the comments.
An introvert is someone who collects energy by being alone but expends it by being around others. Now, an extrovert is one who collects energy by being with others and expends it by being alone. And for the record, I don't think there's such thing be an "ambivert".
It's too common that people clump their social habits and temperaments into being an intro/extro-vert (don't get me wrong, there is an overlap but I don't feel it's a hard and fast rule).

This is so timely. I'm not social at work at all. The thing though is I'm not really social period. I think this makes my coworkers uncomfortable and at this point they seem to hate me. But that's just how I am. I only speak up when someone invades my space so it makes me seem like a bitch but I'm the opposite lol.

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Před 7 lety +3

fashionerdxo My first "big girl job" after high school (I'm ignoring doing fast food) was at a webchat center for Verizon. I loved that we could bring music players without cameras (my Zune HD fit the bill perfectly) and thus, I'd tune everyone else out around me. My coworkers all knew my name...but I didn't know any of theirs. They left me alone, which I thought was fine but it began to bother me that I was making myself a complete outcast.
So, what I did was to try to say something during our meetings. Also, we did potlucks a lot, and the fact that I'd bring something made me feel like part of the group. I'd speak to them a little, but they knew I was an introvert and didn't press me too much. Also, as it was my first big job after high school, I was still unwinding the emotional damage from years of being bullied so that too made me withdraw into myself at that time.
After leaving that job to work at an actual call center, I learned I actually hate being alone at work. I had a funny and loud coworker who sat next to me and though I didn't talk directly to her much, it was lonely when she was gone. I was in a corner cubicle by myself otherwise. I learned that even when I'm not talking to someone, I thrive off of being surrounded by other humans, especially when my job involves speaking out loud. It keeps me from focusing on the personal issues I have with my voice and I can relax and speak naturally.
What I'd recommend to you is to maybe create a fake reason to speak with someone. If you guys do group trainings, maybe ask a question to someone about it, even if in truth you know the answer. Maybe follow it up with some experiences you've had on the job so far. For my call center jobs, we all can regale each other with horrible customer stories...They never get old. Or after the weekend, come in and say good morning to one or two people and follow it up with, "How was your weekend? Or maybe, "Wow, that weekend went by way too fast!" Usually people will make a sound or say something to agree with you, lol. This way, it shows you're verbal and trying to communicate.
Simple and small moments of interaction can help people warm up to you :) Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of advice because I'm quite the loner, but I at least try to laugh or say something in meetings or at the start of the day to show I speak, I'm friendly, and while I might seem quiet, I'm a comical and silly person when I'm allowed to fully be myself 😀
When a coworker later asks me a question about our job, it makes me feel good because now I know they realize that yes, I do speak, I just also need time to myself as well.

As someone who worked at home for a year I am so glad to now be in an open office setup. BUT I discovered that Im a professional introvert. Negatives - other teams sitting near being on Skype call or chatting/joking is so annoying -_- Positives - the team I work in (4 data analysts) are all professional introverts. Thus working from home, having headphones in, quick emails, very prepared meetings, sprint and scrum style planning are all green lights. I'm ecstatic to be in a team with like minded people making our team very productive.

I love working as part of a team, but then I want to get away and do my part of the project. • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley

I would club a baby seal if it would allow me to work in an office setting that didn't deal directly with customers, lol. I can deal with coworkers and bosses. Those are fine. I see them on a regular basis and I can adjust myself over time to handle them. I find dealing with customers, both over the phone and in person, extremely nerve-wracking. But as I don't have a degree yet, office jobs are hard for me to come by. Even being a receptionist seems hard to get.
I now have a possible upcoming interview to be a sales specialist for a bank, and the reviews I've read online about the job aren't good. Extremely high sales goals that many say are nearly impossible to reach in many cities and talking with people in person and over the phone constantly. But...I'll make more money.
I think if I'm offered the job, I'll do my weeks of training and look to jump ship to something else afterwards. I've never done that before and I do want experience in a new job field. But I've never liked sales. I tried doing sales in my most comfortable environment, online, and still failed. I should've thought of that before I applied but I figured a job is better than no job. Or...just push through. I'll get nowhere with that "I can't do" attitude.
Though that's easier said than done, heh.

I like my little cubby where I can hide away and get shit done away from prying eyes. The whole nonsense about not allowing employees to wear headphones is such bs, too in a lot of offices. If I'm doing my work and efficiently getting my job done, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to wear headphones just because Susan in accounting abused it 3 years ago. I wish employers would offer both and let the socials have their chatter space and the introverts have their hideouts.

Emilee Why do you perceive that everyone at work has nothing better to do than to stare at you? As for the headphones, the work world (and the world in general) is all about interpersonal relationships. Wearing headphones makes a person unapproachable. No doubt, that's introvert heaven, but it's no way to succeed in business or in life.

Work introvert??? Introvert/extrovert isn't dependant on the situation.
It's about energy. Introverts charge up alone or in small groups. Extroverts charge up around lots of people and stimuli.
These terms don't really apply in this example.
Maybe better terms would be, private/gregarious.
Some AWESOME info and tips but, it's more about desired work style than extrovert/introvert. :)

I'm starting to get my resume in order because it's time to find something else. I cannot continue in this environment. But it comes at the worst time financially to try to start over with a new employer. I have to find the strength to get though it.
