  • One of the best versions I've heard of this song Tony, So eloquent it is appropriate for all wars past and present. The loss of life never makes things better.

My Grandfather sang just like this!!! He got sick here in the states, but he moved back home to die. He said it was better to die beneath an Irish sky.

I just want to add sir, that your voice is amazing! Your voice is so rich with the heart, soul, and history of Ireland. I played this for my family, and it made my daughters cry. Amazing job Mr. Cunningham!

werewolf56.....written by a scotsman eric bogle out of respect for all the soldiers in a ww1 cemetery he was visiting in belgium. i knew this sang when it first came out(no mans land) he has never ever mentioned the nationalities of the soldiers. it was for them all.

I never understood why the Irish sided with the Bitish in WWI. Did they really believe Churchill would keep his promise? I cannot understand why we are siding with the British today. Shouldn`t we be calling for consistent standards? If Ukraine gets fighter jets and tanks shouldn`t the new IRA? If Russia is sanctioned, shouldn`t the UK? The occupation of another country is either okay or it isn`t. The west needs to make up it`s mind and apply the same set of standards to every country, or none.

@@brucecollins4729 Not quite, following is quoted from the Irish Times 2015. I have also heard Eric Bogle comment on this.
Singer-songwriter Eric Bogle said he wrote The Green Fields of France as a response to the anti-Irish sentiment in Britain during the IRA bombing campaign of the 1970s.
Bogle revealed he chose the name “Willie McBride” for the 19-year-old who features in the song because of its “Irish connotations”.
