I feel like this camera would be a hundred times more usable if it just had a peephole viewfinder (like those super tiny ones on older Barnacks) and a tiny, tiny mirror on front for composing selfies. I certainly don't need to be giving this the attention to composition that I would with an X-system camera, but I do think increasing the size by like 10% to add room for those things would just make this so much easier to take good photos with.
I felt like that too, but it if you check my photos at the end of the video, all but the wide view of me with the big hands, and the pavilion reflection were ALL shot blind without composing. Most actually end up ok, and that in turn allows a much quicker way of shooting without formal composition.
Thanks Gordon, I'm sure it's target audience will be well pleased with the Pal. I wish Fuji would take the fun ethos of this camera and make a low priced modern digicam. No screen, no zoom, just a basic optical viewfinder and some great fuji coloured jpegs.
This is a neat design and pretty nifty app, but it’d be far better to get the Instax Mini Evo. This little thing looks like something that would come in a box of cereal. I’ll probably still get one, because I’m wired that way.
Mk1 had a screen, just not a tiltscreen Campsnap and papershoot come to mind for those wanting and old-school experience without a screen. 1 is too expensive and 1 is a bit too shitty though IMO
At 16mm, this seems like an obvious choice for selfies and group shots. This should be huge in Japan and other Asian markets, not so much in the US, No idea why they are even releasing it here. Might be ok for kids but expensive.
My mind is trying to wrap around this. Basically, these insta cameras are digital cameras with the ability to print on the fly or connected to a printer. I am still wondering what the appeal is, that being said, I shoot with digicams, though they tend to be at times equally lo fi quality. This is a very niche market, but I guess one with funds to buy printer paper. Thanks Gordan for your review! Interesting concept if not built on a bit of redundancy of tech. The 50 shot limit is kind of odd, but I get the appeal it could have.
Yeah, it can be confusing at first! Basically they do cameras with printers builtin, and printers by themselves. This Pal is new for them as it's their first instax camera that needs a separate printer to print.
Why do I like the look of this over a phone? Is it because it's so ugly it's reached endearing again? It reminds me of the low DR charm of old digicams rather than the bad quality over HDR crunchy version of a modern image that we still get from phones, and cheap drones. I think I'd still rather use this if I'm honest. 😂
Wow, after reading the comments, I’m very surprised how many people talk about environmental issues and how they hate the camera I just shoot on a Polaroid and wanted to get a cheaper small camera overall and I got so excited seeing this tiny little weird camera because…I’m not sure lol but I like it. After reading the comments, I’d rather get the instax mini evo than this since they’re the same price and I’d appreciate it better than the pal
Given the seeming public commitment to advancing photography and photojournalism they made with the GFX100II, maybe a “pro” version of this can be considered for reportage where it needs to be very discrete. 25 megapixel. Point, shoot and go. Or a higher spec version for accessibility folks amongst us who cannot operate the typical camera but still want to enjoy quality photography
I have a DXO One that can't connect to a phone. It has a crude "framing assist" screen. It fits in my pocket and I use it for street snapshots. This is similar but more fun.
I like the idea, but seems less filmic than other instax. The 2010 webcam look is somewhat off-putting, maybe Fuji can add some kind of AI denoise in app to even things out
Yes, the image quality was noisier than I expected - interesting stippling on skies which implied a reduced colour depth or strange compression or lots of noise. But when printed or viewed on your phone, they looked fine.
I'm still holding out for an Instax Square Evo. I'm not really sure why to get this. I'm the instax guy at a party or event with my instax printer or camera. So I take the pictures and print them out. But I think it would be fun to pass around this camera and let others take picks to them come to a printer station to print out their picks like a mini portable photo booth
This would be a fun little (literally) birthday present for my spouse, who loves to shoot blindly (esp trying to get photos of family, who hide their faces whenever they see a camera or phone camera)... or getting cute photos of dogs or anything else. Just pull it out of a pocket, aim, shoot. Add the Square printer and we will have mini, wide, square printers to choose from when printing. 😁 The problem with Liplay or Evo cameras is they only sent pics to the app AFTER you print the pic...how stupid it that.
I could find myself gifting one of these to my non-photography friends who would enjoy these Tomogachi-like gadgets and its clearly catering to a different crowd that I could see it catching on for a bit. It would be nice if its lower than $90 imo tho.
I think the concept is great so long as the ergonomics of holding and using it are good. I may be inspired to put my 20mm on my FF camera and just walk around snapping images and never looking through it … just to see what gets captured.
A very fair review! But I think it will flop because it needs one hand to hold the camera & another finger to push the shutter button. As for image quality it looks like a camera from around 1999 - 2001, maybe equal to one of the tiny Kodak cameras.
I watched this video to see if the Instax Pal was any good after having noticed an offer on amazon Seems like it would be too much hassle to use in place of one of my other digital cameras... Oh, the image quality isn't that great? I'll definatly stick to using my other digital cameras (even if it means i won't always be able to do instant prints) (for anyone wondering what the offer i spotted is, 40% off Instax Pal when you purchase an Instax Printer)
It's like a tiny digital version of the SupaSnaps Snappit, although the Snappit probably made better images on 126 format film, and I think it was even given away with film purchases, so hard to beat on value for money terms, too.
I was looking for the best price I could find on the Link 2 printer, to print some photos for my young child and found a bundle with the pal for $119.99... for $10 less than the printer alone, I figured my 4, almost 5 year old could have some fun with the PAL and maybe my 1 year old will capture something neat. Thanks for the review! To get the best quality print, should I use and SD card and then print or just print directly from the app?
Yes, that's a cool way to buy the printer! For the PAL, it works best if you forget about the SD card and just use the app to copy the images over and print them.
I still have an EE action cam that I really enjoyed using because it had no screen, not knowing what I had until using an app to download the photos. The EE action cam was much higher resolution though and also came with a WIFI watch which was a really cool idea. I'd really like one of these Fuji cameras but ideally a little cheaper or at least in a package with a printer. Thanks for the detailed video as always!
I like the shiny black version, changeable battery and looks, but Id just find the whole process far too annoying, cant stand apps and using phones for photography..
How is this usb c but the link wide is micro :(. A 2023 product release with micro usb is kinda crazy when we had laptops with exclusively usb c ports in 2016.
Do you think this camera would be usable with just a microSD card and no app? I used to have a toy keychain camera (vistaquest vq1015) with no viewfinder, you just hooked it up to your laptop with USB and moved the files. Nostalgic for that. 😁 nice video, thanks for all the detail!
No, as I explained in the video, you can't use it as a standalone camera, not without significant caveats. It really does need regular interaction with the app to work properly.
I wonder if the app connects to other printers, like the Kodak mini printer. It seems like a fun toy cam (and yes as a Tamagotchi lover I totally see the point): it's just so super cute!

Something of an Epic fail here for Fujifilm. I've got two Instax Cameras and also a printer so I enjoy the format but honestly I just don't get this product at all. After you have paid for this product you also have to budget for a separate printer to make it work! Fun for a couple of hours and in the cupboard it goes to be tossed out in 10 years when it's found again under the small spare change empty batteries and other miscellaneous junk as you notice the plastic has gone bad and is sticky. Bit jarring to think companies are selling this factory to landfill junk but refusing to add a power adapter or charger to their +$2000 camera's.
Might be fun to hang around your neck and take photos as you go through the day. Maybe out walking the streets etc. Don't bother aiming to intently just record the day as you go.
So if I strap this little camera to an existing mini link printer, I've got an instant camera, right? Odd that Fujifilm removed wireless connectivity with their Instax Printers to their cameras. I have an X-T3 and older Instax mini Printer that connects without issue.
I like the idea. But the cost is everything for a small gadget like this. And because of that, I don't like it. They should do an instax ecosystem. For instance, I will buy this gadget for cheap but will spend money on cartidges and link printers. That's how it should be.
This feels like a gimmick toy from a magazine. Buy any old digicam instead and an SD cardreader for your phone and you'll have more fun, more options, better image quality, very likely a zoom and it will continue to work even without the app.
@@cameralabs I sure hope that the instax pal fails to appeal to anyone, honestly. In my mind it is manufactured e-waste by design not only because of the reliance on the app but also because, like you said, basically everyone already has a better camera in the pocket. Don't want to bother with settings and shoot blind? I'm sure there is a camera app somewhere that just has a button in the middle of the screen and shows nothing else. And if there isn't yet, there will be in 20 minutes. :P Great video as always! .... I just can't help but get unreasonably mad at this thing. xD
Thanks, yeah, the only ones I previewed with my phone were the Pier coverage views, the Pavilion reflection and the one with my hands close to the lens. Everything else was shot blind
@@cameralabs I know my friend, but with 99 bucks + over 100 bucks for a link printer, fuji needs to start developing more quality on its tiny sensors... EDIT: speaking about instax, we've got over 10 camera models with same tech specs.... Common...
Glad you enjoyed my approach! I don't think a reviewer should dismiss something without considering who else might like it or without giving it a shot! As I mentioned, I know it's not for me personally, but I did enjoy it and found the approach refreshing - and that's really important if you've been doing anything for a while and, maybe, found yourself lacking inspiration or motivation - it's good to mix it up!
Don’t get me wrong cute lil thing adorable lol but I don’t see the difference in this and the instax camera like really I don’t need another app on my phone taking up my memory space on my phone the app do way a lot plus my my instax printer is better I use my instax printer two print all the pic I like out I can’t be fuck potting and shooting that why instax printers are better just print the out from your phone point on cute and small that’s it for me
I'm so sorry you need to review this stupid tik-tokish product. Hope this is a completely fail. Better Fuji making a proper top quality instant camera (sort of Polaroid has done with its new i2).
@@TungstenOvergaard I'd have thought so, but maybe the market for it is smaller than we think. They're certainly very successful with the really simple models like the Mini 12 series.

No T100 screen. Gutted.
You got some well lined up shots especially considering there's no viewfinder
Thanks, yeah, the only ones I previewed with my phone were the Pier coverage views, the Pavilion reflection and the one with my hands close to the lens. Everything else was shot blind
This feels like a DigitalRev challenge camera
I use the Polaroid go
Yep, that's a nice option, I reviewed it here too
Interesting idea .. but why i have to spend 99 bucks when i can do better images using my phone with my instax link printer? Comon Fuji
As I said, it's about not using your phone.
@@cameralabs I know my friend, but with 99 bucks + over 100 bucks for a link printer, fuji needs to start developing more quality on its tiny sensors... EDIT: speaking about instax, we've got over 10 camera models with same tech specs.... Common...
Thanks for being a very knowledgeable photographer and not being a snob.
@@cameralabs This is why I look forward to your reviews the most
Nikon releasing a retro style full frame camera, Fuji releasing toy cameras now
Fujifilm also releasing the GFX100 II a couple of weeks ago, plus all the X-Trans V cameras.
It seems fun but the cost is too high.
I agree
Don’t get me wrong cute lil thing adorable lol but I don’t see the difference in this and the instax camera like really I don’t need another app on my phone taking up my memory space on my phone the app do way a lot plus my my instax printer is better I use my instax printer two print all the pic I like out I can’t be fuck potting and shooting that why instax printers are better just print the out from your phone point on cute and small that’s it for me
canon clip camera is better concept
Interesting 🤨
Phase One Pall.... POP😂
Is this a joke, ha looks like a creepers camera.
It could be ok for kids but need a smartphone or printer…
True, it won't work for long without one of those! But i think more aimed at teens who will have a phone.
@@cameralabs IDK, it is manufactured wasted IMO. They should give us a new X70 🥲
I'd love a new X70@@AlainKapture
If it had a printer I’d say yes otherwise trash bin
Nice! Cheers Big G!!
You're welcome!
Let's not pretend, it's literally the worst idea Fuji has had and will just contribute to even more environmental waste a few months after Christmas
Its female. It can be your new girlfriend.
I think Pal can be whatever you want
I'm so sorry you need to review this stupid tik-tokish product. Hope this is a completely fail. Better Fuji making a proper top quality instant camera (sort of Polaroid has done with its new i2).
I keep asking them to make an instant camera for enthusiasts - like the new Polaroid as you've rightly pointed out, or even one of the NONS products.
@@cameralabs that would be awesome. And a best-seller 😫
@@TungstenOvergaard I'd have thought so, but maybe the market for it is smaller than we think. They're certainly very successful with the really simple models like the Mini 12 series.
