I was thinking about "Pearl Islands" too, mostly because of the pirates theme, that was interesting. Also the cast wasn't bad. The outcasts twist was too much though, but overall it is a good for a start watching.
Thank you for including Cook Islands! It's one of the best & most underrated seasons: great, diverse cast, many interesting events & memorable moments, one of the best winners ever, good pacing. Your picks are awesome - my top 5 using your critieria would only swap out season 33 for 6. I think that you do need one of the oldest seasons to give newbies a better perspective about where we've come and Amazon was a game changer. I also think that Cagayan was recent enough that as of now, it can still be considered part of the 'modern era' of seasons.

Good point. Cesternino was amazing strategically but had some questionable comments, among others. I wasn't a fan of that either but figured it would be worth it to see origins of some modern day strategies. But yeah, the sexism can be a big turn off, esp for newbies.

I started with Heroes vs Villains and I was hooked! I was so intrigued by the idea of good vs bad and it was fascinating to watch 'professionals' at the game play once again. Of course, I didn't understand how important characters like Cirie, Boston Rob, Colby, or Sandra actually were, but I still remember being absolutely fascinated by the show, and it made me want to go back and watch these players "in their prime" A.K.A. how they were originally. I immediately watched Tocantins after!! (And, just like you said, I was hooked again.)

HvV was my first season too! I dont remember very much cause i was like 6 years old when they show that in Finland. We can see only 1 season in year, sometimes 2. The last one that we saw was millenials vs Gen X which ended about month ago
I started with Cook Islands knowing who wins already, but it was just such an entertaining season and after seeing so many forms of character growth through players like Parvati it really made me appreciate Cook Islands, it was just amazing.

Cagayan was the first season I watched. My brother had it on, and I instantly became hooked. I fell in love with with the concept. My parents said it was stupid, but they gradually got hooked too, and started rooting for Spencer and despised Tony.

I started off with david vs goliath and it was perfecttttt i absolutely LOVED the casting, location and the overall concept then i watched season 38 and it wasnt really as good but i wanted to give survivor another chance😂 so i watched the first four seasons and i was hooked💕☺️
My first season was Cagayan and I’m still hooked. Cook Islands, Tocantins, Kaôh Rong, China and San Juan del sur are really good new player seasons. Mvgx has some pretty iconic moments too
The first season I watched was Cagayan, none of my friends watch survivor and I found Cagayan by luck. Since watching I have been hooked and it is my favourite ever season and Tony is my favourite ever player :D
Love that season but I get so annoyed when people say the Aitu 4 were the underdogs when they obviously had the smartest player in the game in Yul & the challenge beast Ozzy so if any challenge had a water element, he would destroy it. I get that they were down in numbers but that 4 was super tight and strong!
My Top 5: 1. Cagayan (Great cast, Modern gameplay, great ending) 2. China (Great characters, amazing cast, everyone is interesting) 3. Cook Islands (Same reasons you said) 4. The Amazon (More old school, but a lot of good strategists) 5. Millennials v Gen X (Grest context, cast, more modern)
the no returning player rule makes sense but ugh they are some of my favorite seasons, such as heros vs villians and blood vs water redemption. It's really fun to see a lot of your favorite returning players a season together especially if they've played together before. (I do like the ones mentioned in the the video though- especially Cagayan)
My bf and his family just got me watching Survivor for the first time, with WaW, and I've been watching your videos and past seasons and realizing I may have tuned in with the worst possible season to start on lol!! The amount of gameplay is insane and it's so weird to watch earlier seasons where they just chill at camp or catch their food
MvGX was my first ever survivor season (I legit only started watching for Mari and I have no shame admitted this) and I was really happen as to what I saw and I'm happy it helped me be a Survivor Fan
I love you and your videos man, and what you're doing for the Survivor community. I gotta disagree with Cagayan and China. In my opinion, if there is a season you consider top 5, DO NOT recommend them to watch it first. I've seen all the seasons of survivor and feel that you need to watch a few before Cagayan and China so that you can really appreciate how amazing they are. For me, Cagayan is the 2nd best season in the show's history, and to start with it as your first season, just doesn't feel right. Great shout with Cook Islands, that's my go to, great story, cast, amazing location and they're still trying to figure out how the game works.
I think you can recommend personal top 5 seasons, it just depends on your audience! I ultimately chose Cagayan because I think it will hook a new person episode by episode more than any other season. It's a little greedy to start with such a strong season first, I agree, but I still wanted to include it for those who are interested. I do know some people who don't care much for Cagayan, crazy as it sounds!

Peridiam Cagayan had me hooked. Whenever I got bored of watching it I would just sit back and do something for a minute then I would want to keep watching it lol! Cagayan is my favorite season of all time with my favorite winner of all time, and it was the first season that I started watching Survivor
First season I always recommend is Pearl Islands. It's early enough into the show, with enough strategy/cutthroat gameplay already developed, interesting characters, an okay roster of challenges, but is also not too much to keep track of.
Me too and in a way it’s a little sad to start with the best one ever by a mile and with all the big spoilers for earlier seasons but that’s the proper way to get hooked.
Survivor Philippines is in my opinion the best season of survivor. It’s the season that got me hooked. And, even though it had 3 returning players, you didn’t have to watch their respective season prior to watching Philippines. This season has some outstanding game play, memorable players, and an amazing storyline. Love it.

The only other person I've ever gotten to watch a whole season of Survivor was trough Australian Survivor (both seasons of the reboot, although the second one is better and more satisfying). There's just something about longer episodes that allows for the personality of the great cast to shine. I really believe many Survivor fans - not only beginners! - are missing out on some of the best gameplay and casting choices this series has ever produced by ignoring Survivor AU. As a side note, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the series and maybe a video of what both versions of the show could learn from each other!
My first season EVER that I remember watching live was 8 (All-Stars). I loved it so much I bought the DVD for Christmas. When the finale aired live, 10-year-old shipper me took pictures with my disposable camera of Rob & Amber’s proposal / engagement. I still have those pictures in a box somewhere. I even named my (now 13-year-old) dog Robin Amber after, you guessed it, Rob & Amber. I stopped watching for many years, though my mom continued. The most modern season that brought me back in that I REMEMBER watching was the first Blood vs Water. (Tho it might have been Philippines but I don’t remember. “Survivor” has been on SO LONG, you watch & remember some and others are FORGETTABLE.) My favorite moment from “Survivor” (game play wise) is STILL when Ciera voted out her mom. Nothing beats that for me.

I can certainly agree with Survivor: Tocantins. It was the first season I watched and got me into Survivor. It will always have a special place in my heart
every reality show i've ever watched my first season was a returnee season (survivor micronesia, big brother 13, amazing race unfinished business) and i think its good to start with one (particularly a half new half returning one tho) so you'll have seasons to go back and watch to see your favs
China was my first season and i LOVED it so much, Courtney is so entertaining, i loved the winner, and it has a few people who later return to play again - so it was nice knowing them before watching returnee seasons
The greatest season in the history of Survivor is the Australian Outback. No over the top twists, an incredibly dynamic cast, an unforgiving setting, and super nostalgic.
Gabon was the first season that I saw, and I’m very thankful for it. It introduced me to a lot of the elements of the show: school yard picks, exile island, tribal shuffles, etc.

As a "newer" survivor viewer, I've been waiting for this one! My first season was that one with Colton, where Kim won... It took me a while to give Survivor another shot. Lol
I always watched survivor as a kid with my family and now that I'm going back and watching random seasons, I'm finding moments that I remember from seasons I watched as a kid and I thinks it's kinda cool that I remember some of what happened but not enough to where it's "spoiled" for me
Cook island was a great season one of my favs was when Cow boy talked about the dream he had that started out sounding like the ramblings of mad man or someone having a stroke lol but turned out to be a pure genius idea for flushing out the immunity idol. What was also great was Probst reaction to that one dude saying he “fell in love At first sight with the chick from another tribe that still makes me laugh.
cao boi's dream literally revolutionized survivor. it was such a genius idea that yul started to realize how cao boi was smarter than he looked. smart of yul to get rid of cao boi immediately, but that strategy is truly amazing.

I think having a satisfying winner is one of the most important factors to consider when introducing someone to the show. Koah Rong is one of my favorite seasons of all time, but the winner had a less than stellar edit, and the last thing you want is to leave the person you’re introducing it to disappointed by the ending.

I just watched season 5 and man, there were zero all-stars but all were filled with heart. The season with Yul in it was definitely my favorite. It really touched me.
I think Australian Outback is a timeless season that would be great for beginners. I actually got hooked after watching San Juan Del Sur which isn't even one of the better seasons which just shows how amazing this show is
Cook islands is a perfect first season to watch. It's one of my favorite in the whole series. China, and MvGX are also good. I don't remember much about Tocantin. I'm pretty indifferent about that season. I didn't like cagayan as much as most people.
I started watching about five episodes into Season 1, but the cast of characters in Australia, season 2, hooked me for good. Old school seasons were more about the characters and less about the strategy but they are still great to watch.

I got my girlfriend to start watching Survivor with me at season 27, which was a less than impressive season especially which used redemption island. She didnt really enjoy it so I convinced her to watch the next season. She loved cagayan
Just as Covid started, my parents introduced my brother and I to Survivor. At first I wasn’t too interested, but once my brother watched the first season, I was on board. It was Survivor the Australian Outback that got me hooked. Here I am, one year and 39 seasons later!👍🏼
My first season was 21 Nicaragua, and I actually really liked it, mostly because of Fabio winning when everyone discounted him at the beginning as a dumb blonde.
The first season I watched in its entirety was Heroes vs Villains, and I figured out who knew each other based on the season tag instead of their jobs and they would often mention it if it was relevant so I didn't find it too jarring. There was something about knowing that these people were meant to represent the best of the last ten years that had me going "okay, so what did these guys all do and are they going to do something cool now?" Then Nicaragua happened and I ended up losing interest, and came back in time for Game Changers, which then got me hooked on it again despite only recognising those who had come from Heroes vs Villains - which gave me an idea of "old guard vs new guard", and a feeling of "I know about three people here, are these others at the same level?". I think the appeal of a returning player season without having seen the ones they came from was seeing a game where they put in a bunch of people who had proven they weren't going to be boring, having played before, and so I was willing to go for it.
My sister saw David on M vs GX and started watching the show. She said she would never watch survivor, but now has watched almost every season. Season 33 is a great season to start watching survivor.
I think Cagayan isn’t a great season to start with because you need to know how the game works to appreciate the masterful plays and tricks in game. I started with Figi, it was simple and understandable. Cagayan is still an amazing season
I just want to thank you for this video. I had my boyfriend, who isn't a Survivor fan, watch this video as he wanted to watch the new season that's coming up with me. We already watch Big Brother together so he figured he would get into Survivor since I've played a Live version of it before. Because of your suggestion of MvGX, he's been watching and sends me updates every episode because of how GAGGED he is at the boot order. It's so interesting seeing his final 3 picks change after every couple of episodes, and I can't wait for him to see who actually makes it there and wins.
I'm an OG Survivor fan. I have watched from season 1 till now on season 38. Just like you Peridiam, I do rewatch some seasons. I recently got a friend into survivor. The top 5season I would recommend for a beginner is, 1.) Season 10, Survivor Pulau. 2.) Survivor exile island (season 12) 3.) Survivor cook islands (season 13) 4.) Survivor Tocantins (season 18) 5.) Survivor Africa (season 3)

Ahh I started w watching Cook islands as it came out live. Such great memories. A perfect way to start and hook me into Survivor. I was only like 8 or 9 and I became obsessed. Playing "survivor challenges" in my backyard with my little sister.
i liked Borneo but i can see how it might not be a good season to introduce someone to survivor. it's kinda slow and post merge it was a pagonging which doesnt particularly make for very exciting tv. i feel u kinda have to be already a fan of survivor to really appreciate borneo
Start from Season 1 and go in order. Trust me. This is how 90% of its fans became fans of the show, it's how I got into it, it's the way to do it. The thing is, if you start with the more recent Survivor you won't be able to go back and revisit the old ones. Most of the old ones that I used to love, I can't really watch anymore because of how much Survivor has changed. But going into it without ever having seen Survivor before...it just works. It works so well. There's a reason why Survivor became a national phenomenon and won the hearts of millions of Americans back in 2000. If you start from Borneo you will be hooked from the very first few minutes.

I'm a long time survivor (and Peridiam) fan, and I recently got my girlfriend hooked on the show with the help of this list. We started with Millenials vs Gen X, then went Cook Islands, Pearl Islands, China. And now we're watching Micronesia (cuz you gotta get a returnee season in there), with Tocantins, Cagayan, and Heroes vs. Villains to come. Considering we got together less than a month before the whole covid thing kicked off, it's been kinda hard to not be able to see each other, so survivor's become our nightly quarantine routine. I LOVED Tocantins, definitely my favorite. Game changers is a close second but I could rewatch Tocantins over and over and never get sick of it.

The first season I watched was Cagayan, none of my friends watch survivor and I found Cagayan by luck. Since watching I have been hooked and it is my favourite ever season and Tony is my favourite ever player :D

Love that season but I get so annoyed when people say the Aitu 4 were the underdogs when they obviously had the smartest player in the game in Yul & the challenge beast Ozzy so if any challenge had a water element, he would destroy it. I get that they were down in numbers but that 4 was super tight and strong!

the no returning player rule makes sense but ugh they are some of my favorite seasons, such as heros vs villians and blood vs water redemption. It's really fun to see a lot of your favorite returning players a season together especially if they've played together before.

My bf and his family just got me watching Survivor for the first time, with WaW, and I've been watching your videos and past seasons and realizing I may have tuned in with the worst possible season to start on lol!! The amount of gameplay is insane and it's so weird to watch earlier seasons where they just chill at camp or catch their food
MvGX was my first ever survivor season (I legit only started watching for Mari and I have no shame admitted this) and I was really happen as to what I saw and I'm happy it helped me be a Survivor Fan

I love you and your videos man, and what you're doing for the Survivor community. I gotta disagree with Cagayan and China. In my opinion, if there is a season you consider top 5, DO NOT recommend them to watch it first. I've seen all the seasons of survivor and feel that you need to watch a few before Cagayan and China so that you can really appreciate how amazing they are. For me, Cagayan is the 2nd best season in the show's history, and to start with it as your first season, just doesn't feel right.
Great shout with Cook Islands, that's my go to, great story, cast, amazing location and they're still trying to figure out how the game works.
I think you can recommend personal top 5 seasons, it just depends on your audience! I ultimately chose Cagayan because I think it will hook a new person episode by episode more than any other season. It's a little greedy to start with such a strong season first, I agree, but I still wanted to include it for those who are interested. I do know some people who don't care much for Cagayan, crazy as it sounds!

Peridiam Cagayan had me hooked. Whenever I got bored of watching it I would just sit back and do something for a minute then I would want to keep watching it lol! Cagayan is my favorite season of all time with my favorite winner of all time, and it was the first season that I started watching Survivor
First season I always recommend is Pearl Islands. It's early enough into the show, with enough strategy/cutthroat gameplay already developed, interesting characters, an okay roster of challenges, but is also not too much to keep track of.
I was happy you included survivor china. That was the first season i watched start to finish and i was hooked. Still one of my favorites to this day

Survivor Philippines is in my opinion the best season of survivor. It’s the season that got me hooked. And, even though it had 3 returning players, you didn’t have to watch their respective season prior to watching Philippines. This season has some outstanding game play, memorable players, and an amazing storyline. Love it.

The only other person I've ever gotten to watch a whole season of Survivor was trough Australian Survivor (both seasons of the reboot, although the second one is better and more satisfying). There's just something about longer episodes that allows for the personality of the great cast to shine. I really believe many Survivor fans - not only beginners! - are missing out on some of the best gameplay and casting choices this series has ever produced by ignoring Survivor AU. As a side note, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the series and maybe a video of what both versions of the show could learn from each other!

My first season EVER that I remember watching live was 8 (All-Stars). I loved it so much I bought the DVD for Christmas. When the finale aired live, 10-year-old shipper me took pictures with my disposable camera of Rob & Amber’s proposal / engagement. I still have those pictures in a box somewhere. I even named my (now 13-year-old) dog Robin Amber after, you guessed it, Rob & Amber.
I stopped watching for many years, though my mom continued. The most modern season that brought me back in that I REMEMBER watching was the first Blood vs Water. (Tho it might have been Philippines but I don’t remember. “Survivor” has been on SO LONG, you watch & remember some and others are FORGETTABLE.) My favorite moment from “Survivor” (game play wise) is STILL when Ciera voted out her mom. Nothing beats that for me.

every reality show i've ever watched my first season was a returnee season (survivor micronesia, big brother 13, amazing race unfinished business) and i think its good to start with one (particularly a half new half returning one tho) so you'll have seasons to go back and watch to see your favs

China was my first season and i LOVED it so much, Courtney is so entertaining, i loved the winner, and it has a few people who later return to play again - so it was nice knowing them before watching returnee seasons
The greatest season in the history of Survivor is the Australian Outback. No over the top twists, an incredibly dynamic cast, an unforgiving setting, and super nostalgic.
Gabon was the first season that I saw, and I’m very thankful for it. It introduced me to a lot of the elements of the show: school yard picks, exile island, tribal shuffles, etc.

Started with Australian Outback way back in 2001. Micronesia got me back in and watched every season since and watched the seasons I missed.
I always watched survivor as a kid with my family and now that I'm going back and watching random seasons, I'm finding moments that I remember from seasons I watched as a kid and I thinks it's kinda cool that I remember some of what happened but not enough to where it's "spoiled" for me
Cook island was a great season one of my favs was when Cow boy talked about the dream he had that started out sounding like the ramblings of mad man or someone having a stroke lol but turned out to be a pure genius idea for flushing out the immunity idol. What was also great was Probst reaction to that one dude saying he “fell in love At first sight with the chick from another tribe that still makes me laugh.
cao boi's dream literally revolutionized survivor. it was such a genius idea that yul started to realize how cao boi was smarter than he looked. smart of yul to get rid of cao boi immediately, but that strategy is truly amazing.

I have started with Cook Island so I can confirm it is good first season tho I must say I would personally put Kaoh Rong instead of M vs GX
While it is probably ore popular than MvGx it also has an ending that irritated survivor fans.
I think having a satisfying winner is one of the most important factors to consider when introducing someone to the show. Koah Rong is one of my favorite seasons of all time, but the winner had a less than stellar edit, and the last thing you want is to leave the person you’re introducing it to disappointed by the ending.

I just watched season 5 and man, there were zero all-stars but all were filled with heart. The season with Yul in it was definitely my favorite. It really touched me.
I got hooked on survivor by watching Tocantins without even watching this list. I just happened to pick randomly.
I think Australian Outback is a timeless season that would be great for beginners. I actually got hooked after watching San Juan Del Sur which isn't even one of the better seasons which just shows how amazing this show is

I don't remember much about Tocantin. I'm pretty indifferent about that season.
I didn't like cagayan as much as most people.
I started watching about five episodes into Season 1, but the cast of characters in Australia, season 2, hooked me for good. Old school seasons were more about the characters and less about the strategy but they are still great to watch.

I got my girlfriend to start watching Survivor with me at season 27, which was a less than impressive season especially which used redemption island. She didnt really enjoy it so I convinced her to watch the next season. She loved cagayan

Just as Covid started, my parents introduced my brother and I to Survivor. At first I wasn’t too interested, but once my brother watched the first season, I was on board. It was Survivor the Australian Outback that got me hooked. Here I am, one year and 39 seasons later!👍🏼
Season 33 millennial vs. Gen X actually was my first season and it definitely got me hooked!
My first season was 21 Nicaragua, and I actually really liked it, mostly because of Fabio winning when everyone discounted him at the beginning as a dumb blonde.

Oh no! Spoiler alert....I just started binge watching and only have 3-4 episodes under my belt...now I know who won....bummer.
The first season I watched in its entirety was Heroes vs Villains, and I figured out who knew each other based on the season tag instead of their jobs and they would often mention it if it was relevant so I didn't find it too jarring. There was something about knowing that these people were meant to represent the best of the last ten years that had me going "okay, so what did these guys all do and are they going to do something cool now?"
Then Nicaragua happened and I ended up losing interest, and came back in time for Game Changers, which then got me hooked on it again despite only recognising those who had come from Heroes vs Villains - which gave me an idea of "old guard vs new guard", and a feeling of "I know about three people here, are these others at the same level?".
I think the appeal of a returning player season without having seen the ones they came from was seeing a game where they put in a bunch of people who had proven they weren't going to be boring, having played before, and so I was willing to go for it.
My sister saw David on M vs GX and started watching the show. She said she would never watch survivor, but now has watched almost every season. Season 33 is a great season to start watching survivor.
Without hesitation I'd say 13 and 18.
I think Cagayan isn’t a great season to start with because you need to know how the game works to appreciate the masterful plays and tricks in game. I started with Figi, it was simple and understandable. Cagayan is still an amazing season

I just want to thank you for this video. I had my boyfriend, who isn't a Survivor fan, watch this video as he wanted to watch the new season that's coming up with me. We already watch Big Brother together so he figured he would get into Survivor since I've played a Live version of it before. Because of your suggestion of MvGX, he's been watching and sends me updates every episode because of how GAGGED he is at the boot order. It's so interesting seeing his final 3 picks change after every couple of episodes, and I can't wait for him to see who actually makes it there and wins.
I'm an OG Survivor fan. I have watched from season 1 till now on season 38. Just like you Peridiam, I do rewatch some seasons. I recently got a friend into survivor.

I’ve come back to this video because i used to not really care for survivor but wanted to give it a shot. But after watching Tocantins as per suggestion from this video, I can confirm that I am hooked.

i liked Borneo but i can see how it might not be a good season to introduce someone to survivor. it's kinda slow and post merge it was a pagonging which doesnt particularly make for very exciting tv. i feel u kinda have to be already a fan of survivor to really appreciate borneo

Start from Season 1 and go in order. Trust me. This is how 90% of its fans became fans of the show, it's how I got into it, it's the way to do it. The thing is, if you start with the more recent Survivor you won't be able to go back and revisit the old ones. Most of the old ones that I used to love, I can't really watch anymore because of how much Survivor has changed. But going into it without ever having seen Survivor before...it just works. It works so well. There's a reason why Survivor became a national phenomenon and won the hearts of millions of Americans back in 2000. If you start from Borneo you will be hooked from the very first few minutes.

I'm a long time survivor (and Peridiam) fan, and I recently got my girlfriend hooked on the show with the help of this list. We started with Millenials vs Gen X, then went Cook Islands, Pearl Islands, China. And now we're watching Micronesia (cuz you gotta get a returnee season in there), with Tocantins, Cagayan, and Heroes vs. Villains to come. Considering we got together less than a month before the whole covid thing kicked off, it's been kinda hard to not be able to see each other, so survivor's become our nightly quarantine routine. So thanks peridiam for this list!
