Falling asleep at the wheel happens to the best of them but laying down is something else.
As captain one time I once put "the club" on my wheel with the wheel turned to the max and took a nice 6 hour nap on the wheelhouse floor while king crabbing on my boat "The fishy sea hag"... Those were the days
@@cwatson42785 except u would'nt turn it to the max
@@cwatson42785 right and all that went down while you were sleeping in your bed lol
Bs you goof in clown shoes
@@dv1267 sounds like you never sat in the chair
He deserved a second chance and not to be fired, right up until he said it wasn't a big deal...
Like bro you totally need to smoke a bone and chillax, like it totally wasn't a big deal dude, like they are totally in the open ocean dude. Like what are they going to hit dude? Are they going to like hit another boat with like another sleeping capt? If I was a captain I would progress the Industry by like taking bong rips man and like taking quick 20 min power naps every 2 hours. You have to like multi task and think with a open mind man
@@cwatson42785 like like like like
@@cwatson42785so.... Captain Elliot method?
they could drift and start driving into "the ditch" (Taking waves from the side.) which could capsize them if the waves become problematic enough. What if the weather began to change while he was asleep and they drift in the ditch? There is also other things besides JUST the sea to worry about... What if something began to overheat and catch fire? It's happened before on their electric panels, having someone there, awake and aware, can stop it from turning into a life-threatening problem. What if the engine stopped turning and left them dead in the water while they were all asleep? Without the engine going, they would be at the complete mercy of the waves and could again land them in "the ditch"
Those are just three examples right off the bat that I can tell you. There are more.
Also, do you have another word besides. like?
@@wiggitywow6236 its okay if you've never done offshore fishing at night, no need to project your laziness into this situation
I wouldn't fire him for falling asleep but I would fire him for thinking it didn't matter
2:49 Nicky seems like such a good and respectful worker we need more people like him
Camera guy is just like "whelp, hope we don't all die. Nothing I can do about it" lol
That was a still cam that was aimed at Kenny while he slept on the job. That is always on record when the camera crew isn't around.
@@Sigma0283 thanks for the info! I should look into the production for this show a little more. I remember at one point a boat was boarded by the coast guard and I can't remember how many crew members they claimed to have aboard, but I remember questioning if they counted the camera crew in their radio response.
6:57 lol being sleep deprived but still this is a deep moment you can’t let your guys down
It’s never a big deal until it becomes a big deal. Lucky nothing happened
People like that dude never learn
For some it's never real until it's in their face... worked with a lot of guys like that dude.
not a big deal? He fell asleep on watch even in modern times the Code of the Brethren still applies. If you fall asleep on watch they dump you end of story. Falling asleep on watch cost lives you don't do that.
it’s a big deal. What I’m trying to say is the deckhand that doesn’t think it’s a big deal wouldn’t be saying that if something did happen like hitting/running over something or not taking a wave right and capsizing.
Jake couldn't at least let him dunk his finger in his bag once or twice...Sheesh!
Now that was good !
"Olly should have woken me up. ...I was relieved by Kenny."
lol
Jake ages like a Great Dane
You don't fall asleep on watch. Jake needs to dump that guy. Since Pirate days if you fall asleep on watch you get marooned doing that is dangerous and cost lives.
If you’re at the helm, your decisions will always be a big deal. You have crew to keep safe, cargo to keep safe, boat to keep safe. This is one of those jobs where, mistake or not, it can cost many things.
I would have loved to seen wild Bill or sig react to something like that 😮
This is like drunk driving - you might get away with it once, or twice, or a dozen times. But, sooner or later, your luck will run out and something catastrophic will happen. And your excuses won't matter.
Here's a thought.. the guys that are going to be running the boat that night gets to come in and get a little bit of sleep before they have to set up all night watching the boat 🤭
So I thought that as well, but if you hear Jake say that he slept through 4 shifts, it actually comes down to only about 2 hours a shift.
2 hours of watching the wheel to me personally sounds fun, and not out of the question as we pulled guard with 2 hour shifts in the army.
Even if the guy knew he was struggling, he should of either sucked it up or notified someone. The risk factors involved in not only the lives / families of the 7 on board, but the gear, the boat, other boaters.
Jake would have stayed up if he knew, that guy made a very dumb mistake.
@Jacob Salo they do one hour shifts
@@RetiredSPC it's pretty hard to stay awake on watch and weather like that its even easier to fall asleep, our boat has a watch keeper which goes off every 15 minutes if you haven't disarmed it
One hour fire guard isnt bad at all until youve been hauling pots for 16+ hours.
All you have to do is set the wheel watch alarm 🚨. I do it on my boat! 😳
On the the bright side they all got a better nights rest. ✌🏼🇺🇸
That is so serious and dangerous
Yea exactly!!!
Not that big of a deal he says. He would be kicked off the boat next time we got to land
yup Pirate Code if you fall asleep on watch you get marooned end of story.
Dude Jack's on crack, just wake him up and let him take a hit off the ol crack pipe and he'll be good to go, no need to put the boat at risk like that lol.
He could have cost everyone there lives
Shame he didn't
@@phantom2101 Do people like you get some sense of perverse pleasure to make such anti-social malignant comments? I'm legit curious
It is a big deal...
camera man was like "UHHHHHH" guess im the captain now
Falling asleep on wheel watch is just as bad as someone falling asleep on tower guard on deployment in a hostile area. Like that’s not good at all. If you do got a severe issue, then wake someone up to cover for ya.
His attitude of everything fine is alarming. If u wnt to sleep wake someone up. He wouldnt b on my boat
This is why captains have radar, ais, or other navigational machines/devices in their bunks so they know what’s going on in the wheelhouse.
Bruh idk what kind of boat you've been on but I've never seen any kind of equipment in a captains room other than a radio and an intercom.
@@timothykappel198 yea, buddy of mine works on a dragger where the skippers got aid and radar in his bunk, pretty neat lol
"Your pride could have killed us"...as he takes down an entire cigarette in one drag.
Is that cigarette going to kill the entire crew or sink a multi million dollar operation? You’re a meatball.
better than taking down the boat with everyone on board
What does that have to do anything? Guy on watch falls asleep he puts the whole crew at risk
@@bendover7914 Did I congratulate him?
What you mean it’s not a big deal that boats driving itself and no one’s watching for I don’t know a big wave that could capsize the boat or maybe obstacles like another boat it happens. It be like sleeping why’ll your cars on cruise control you still need to see where your going.
Well if it's that rough your not gonna be able to sleep in the first place the boat is gonna be all over the place rocking and rolling and beating and hanging and your gonna be watching where your going plus Jake isn't gonna leave the wheel either. And if there's a big enough rogue wave there's nothing I can do about it anyways.
@@timothykappel198 my guy you still gotta watch where the boats driving yea it’s the open water but there could be another boat that come out of no where I’ve seen it happen
@timothykappel198 dude, if you're tired enough, you'll be able to sleep on jagged rocks in a thunderstorm, a rought ride in 10' waves on a 100ft boat is like a hammock rocking in the wind to somebody that's been up for 40 hours grinding with 1000lb pots
@@timothykappel198 it's easy as to fall asleep in weather haha, you can come across gear, oil Wells, rigs, fishing vessels and other users of the sea, every wave can alter the course so you have to keep it in check otherwise you can be hours off and you can only drop and haul in specific tide so they could very well loose a day if they have to steam to the gear
Imagine driving over rope because you fell asleep, you will have to jump in and cut it off your propeller, all while the boat is turning side on copping massive waves on an already wet deck
Holding wheel wat h is a very serious task cause everyone is depending on you
In iraq I use to rub Tabasco or dip in one eye to try and stay awake on watch
I wonder if Jake has watch jurassic world dominion yet
LOL the mosasaurus
That guy should be fired straight away , after saying, everything is well , nothing happened, what complete tool box 😡😡😡
That attitude stinks 🤮🤮🤮
He should be humble and apologize to everyone.
So the camera guy just films hin sleep 4 hours and doesn't wake him up
camera crew is alseep. the camera showing footage is a fixed camera
Did you really think there was a camera guy standing there for 4 hours...... This might be 1 if the most low IQ comments I've ever seen
@TruthIsPower that is a safety issue a guy falling asleep for 5 hours while on watch lol
"Everybody's fine, boat's fine, power's on, I don't see the big deal" Yeah that's the problem. No foresight as to what COULD happen. He wouldn't know if there's an aircraft carrier in the way until he hit it, much less a stray sea can in the water. I wouldn't trust him to cook breakfast let alone take wheel watch after that
Salam satu jangkar boleh saya ikut bekerja di perusahaan anda ikut Cari king crab.
It’s not that big of a deal he says sure unless you killed everyone. It’s a huge deal it’s one thing to make a mistake it’s another to have no guilt over it and to try and play it off like it wasn’t that big of a thing .
It’s a massive deal , buddy should be fired .
Nothing happened this time
Doesn’t matter
does not matter it is the law of the sea and is in the Pirate Code which everyone including Jake and Johnathan fallow you fall asleep on watch you get marooned that's the rules. Falling asleep on watch cost lives.
Risking the lives of others isn't pride; it's selfishness and laziness. I hate people like Kenny. It's NEVER their fault or it's "not a big deal" and they've always got some kind of excuse ready for any and all situations. Completely incapable of taking responsibility for his own actions. On top of that Kenny lied straight to Jake's face; he didn't have a stomach ache at all he was just tired and lazy. And the way he has to give himself credit for apologizing for his own mistake? Only an actual manchild pats himself on the back for something like that.
I was so happy when he got off the boat. The guy is a danger to everyone around him and holy crap he just does not know when to shut up. One day someone will clock that guy on the jaw properly to teach him a lesson.
he just had a 4 hour nap lol why wouldn't he just go wake the next fella and go to bed?
abit too obvious there, producers
He should of been drinking coffee.
*Should have.
These guys are so physically/mentally tired after 24+ hour shifts of intense labor in the elements coffee wouldn’t do much of anything.
You gotta memmer deez guys ain’t millitry trained and what not
Such a staged show.
Obviously a staged event because someone is filming these episodes. I don't know how someone could fall asleep in rough seas with everyone's life including your own on the line.
You don't think rationally when you are exhauated and sleep deprived it can be worse than being drunk
Remember this next time you see a goofy feminist say men are useless, and then go buy crab legs.
