  • DO YOU CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL WHEN ENGINE OIL IS HOT OR COLD
If you wonder whether you check engine oil when the engine is cold or when the engine is warm in this video we will explain that. We demonstrated the correct way to check engine oil. When the engine is warm you may not get the correct oil level reading die to the fact that maybe the oil did not leak back to the oil pan in addition fluids tend to expand to some degree with temperature increasing. We would recommend to have your car on level ground and check the engine oil level the first thing in the morning before you start your car. Hopefully the video will be helpful to any of you that need to know whether you check the engine oil hot or cold.

Used to always ck my oil after car sat overnight. My owners manual states to check engine oil hot. Run the engine drive car. Shut off engine wait 3 minutes and check the oil level. So, was I under filling it before since I topped it off after checking dead cold? Or was I over filling it

Thanks guys , love your videos. I had always checked the oil on a cold engine so I’d get a correct reading of what was in the oil pan but now I have a 2012 Dodge Avenger 2.4 L and the oil dipstick says right on it to check with engine hot so now that’s what I do . I would assume if it’s not stated on the dip stick still check it cold but if it’s stated on the dipstick to check it hot , like the Avenger, I’ll continue to do that . Thanks again.👍🏻

Awesome, I've always checked cold because, all the oil is in the oil pan. Another reason for the Kia\Hyundai oi consumption is carbon build up on the top piston ring. I you compare that piston from a Kia to say and turbo RDX, you will notice the top ring on the RDX is farther away from the crown of the piston. So, valve intake cleaning done every 15k miles or so, and combustion chamber cleaning around 50k miles. I only just learned this a month ago.

I always thought you check engine oil level cold but since i got a newer car with direct injection my owners manual says check oil after it has been running 7 minutes after shut down for correct level.

A lot easier to get an accurate reading when the vehical is cold. And check the level every month, or sooner if you're leaking or burning oil.
Lastly: 10k or 15k might be how long synthetic last, but doesn't take into account the buildup of impurities.
Me you ask? Every 5k or six months, whichever comes first. And yes, oil is cheaper than major repairs.

Better do what the owners manual says.
My Toyota manual says to warm up and wait a view minutes before checking.

It does say that, but that's because nobody is going to check their oil in the morning before work. People are more likely to check at the gas station while the engine is warm. Lastly, the "normal" level Is anywhere between the low and high hash marks, which is about 1 liter in all vehicles, so the margin of error is literally 1 liter... You can check it cold and it's likely more accurate that way just because of how dip sticks are designed these days. Just aim for the middle of the "normal" range and you should be fine. You can also check your oil cold and hot, and not the difference between the two, then make a mental adjustment.
