  • By the time XR4i launched Sierra sales were struggling but this ad had already been shot. It’s now “Man and high-performance machine in perfect harmony”. Time and budgets were tight so the brochure agency took the unusual step to use images from this TV ad. The driver was journalist/author Jeremy Walton shot in California. I owned the car used in the advert for years, it was fabulous and utterly reliable, its still cherished and on the road, even though sadly no longer with me

Hi, I bought the car from a Ford main dealer with the previous owner Ford Motor Company, registered months before the official launch and was told it had been used for publicity work for Ford. I kept it for many years before selling it to a person who ran the XR4i register at the XR owners club. According to the DVLA, it is still registered I am pleased to say.

I still remember when I first saw this advert - cleverly put in the adverts between Knight Rider!

My dream car when I was 12 or 13. I had a few scale models that took pride of place on my window sill. But my favourite was a 1:24 scale model in White over Grey, with opening bonnet, doors and tailgate, it even had steerable wheels. Made by Burago I believe. It was the nuts!
Never got to own the real thing though, sadly ☹

Me too. I had a silver Corgi Sierra XR4i. One of the best Ford’s I’ve ever seen, and to this day I still remember as a kid seeing it on display in the showrooms. Cars just ain’t like this anymore, no matter how much tech they have built into them. These cars encapsulated an era and had a soul.

A time when Ford produced the most iconic cars on the road and even today these cars can stop the traffic with shed loads of shear presence

The Mark 2 Granada V6, the Sierra XR4I, Capri Injection and the 2.3 Sierra estate, these were the Fords to have as the V6 engines were light years ahead of the Pinto and CVH engines cars.

The Cologne V6 was Ford's finest engine, masses of smooth power, fuel injection and capable of huge mileages with few problems. it was light years ahead of the rough, thirsty and slow ;Pinto used on the 1.6 Sierra.

Many, many thanks Steve for uploading this particular TV advert to CZcams.
I vividly remember watching it several times when it first appeared on out television screens 37 years ago, and have been waiting ever since to watch it again.
I have also placed an order for a copy of your book, 'The Cars You Always Promised Yourself' and am confident I will find a reason to justify this extravagant gift to myself.

Remember car ads that actually told you about the car. Nowadays they ard more likely to show a gay couple playing with a beach ball or something completly uncar related. Loved the XR4i

Ah the good old day's of XR's and Ford's odometer that goes back to 00,001 once they hit a mere 100k miles.
Had two XR3i's back in the day, always prefered preferred the look of the rear quarter in the 3dr Cosworth over the XR4i though.

I was lucky enough to own two of these. A red one and a white one. Masses of power. No need to drop a gear - just put your foot down in whatever gear you were in and it just pulled away.

I owned a black one like the one in this Ad. Lovely car to drive, and loads of passengers would remark how much "grunt" the car had. I could take mine to less than 20 mph in fifth gear and then accelerate again without any juddering. Alternatively, I could drop it down some gears, and it would fly. I kept it for around 16 years, eventually having to take it to a scrap yard, which made me sad.

They also launched a (rare) Sierra XR4x4i with 4wd and fuel injection.
Not many of them were made and they are incredibly rare.

    • @Kit_Bear
      @Kit_Bear Před rokem

That was stock. Turbo Technics conversions could get a lot more out of it. 0-60 would put it in ferrari territory and top speed would beat the RS500 2 years before it even came out.
That engine could be pushed pretty hard for what it was. Sure, it's not as iconic as the Cosworth YB 200 but it was brilliant for it's time.
