It's nice to see so many other people enjoyed Ralph's playin' as much as I did. He was a huge reason for Waylon's success I think he was the greatest musician of all time. I don't mean to brag but, I've got his autograph!
Sounds like heaven to me. With a tear in my eye, and a smile on my face this is just absolutely beautiful. Thank you Ralph Mooney for all the great music.
Bobby Black is another great Steel Player that plays from the heart! He mentioned Ralph Mooney as being one of the greats, Booby never got the recognition like others San Fran bay area player! He was my inspiration to play pedal steel. He still is playing in the bay area. Now 25 yrs later I remember all that great steel, Ralph Mooney just makes you want to cry, That steel is the real country! Not what is today cannot compare to Ralph. yeah they play fast but with out Soul. God Bless Ralph.,
Met and had a chance to tell the man how much his playing stirred my soul, just a couple hours before Joe Ely warmed up for Waylon Jennings on the first of May, 1975 just outside of Lubbock Texas. How could I ever forget? It was my 21st birthday. Thank you Jimmy Deb and Ron Blakey you were all too good to this dumbstruck yank. Love to you all. I was lucky to be mentored by the whole Blakey family, hell I was lucky to know you Texans at all! And a shout out to (then) The Saddle Bronc club on 50th and H street, I could go on and on.....RIP Mr Ralph Mooney.
I wish all of the legends like Ralph would have had understudies who then would be obligated to have understudies. Then we could carry this sound ahead for centuries.
I am so thankful for the technology that allows us the chance to remember greats like Mr. Mooney. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on! GOD bless the Mooney family.
my poppa played like this when he was younger. he was amazing and he still is when i can get him to play. though not as fast as he used to be, he can still make his dobro (he sadly sold his pedal steels) sing like an angel. i've decided to take it up in his place and carry on his work. i've already learned steel guitar rag :D and i've only played for a few months. i want to learn some of the newer age country too but only the stuff with a real heartfelt message too it. thats what true country is
One of the greatest players to ever live. I know his Ricky and my uncle Bobby Glass was like an adoptive son to Moon. I never got the honor to meet him but i wish i could have.
Moon you will live on in our hearts forever God bless Ralph Eugene Mooney .As I was walking out to my truck this morning at 0 dark thirty I could of sworn I heard the intro to "raindy day woman " playing off in the distance . Moon and Waylon back together again
Ralph was true innovator on the pedal steel guitar (the high G# string on the E9th tuning). He not only added a lot to Waylon's sound, but also to Buck Owens', Merle Haggard's, and Wynn Stewart's sound too.
I live in Southern California and I feel like I play the ruins of once great California Country that was orchestrated by folks like Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard -- the Bakersfield sound -- Each got their chance to shine with Ralph Mooney, but there are so few fine steel guitarists like this man we are listening to now left. Just the ghost of his soul on these recordings.
Don't know why but I'm thinking a lot today and missing my friend Ralph "Moon". He was like a grandpa to me though we were not related. I could talk all day about him, but one thing I wil say is that it's so good to be able to hear that "Howdy"again. And yes, he was and always will be the best steel player ever! But more than that, he was a wonderful, loving person. Miss you, Moon.
"Crazy Arms" was a milestone song for Ray Price. --- Prior to "Crazy Arms", you could hear Ray tryin' to sound like Ol' Hank. "Crazy Arms" gave Ray his own brand of Honky-Tonk. --- Hank virtually never used harmony singers. With "Crazy Arms" Ray started to use harmony singers. --- Jerry Rivers, Hank's Fiddle Player, was limited mostly to the double-stop sound. With "Crazy Arms", the Fiddler started the very cool sounding "single note" background. --- With "Crazy Arms", Ray stopped tryin' to sound like Hank. Always love Ralph Mooney's pedal. Hank's steel player, Don Helms, didn't have a Pedal. Pedals weren't put on steel guitars until early 1950's, like 1953 or 1954. Both sounds were GREAT, but different.
Moon played with Wynn Stewart for several years, recorded with Haggard on his first 4 albums and was on part of one tour with Haggard is all. He played a lot of sessions then Richie Albright heard Moon playing one night and fell all over himself getting to him to see who that was. He introduced Moon to Waylon and that was that. 20 years with Waylon.
Carla Rodgers I'm as big a fan of Haggard that there is, but when it comes to pickin a guitar, Merle was not even close to Waylon, but I reckon you already know that. When it came to writing, Merle was TOPS. And vocally, no one could touch him. They were absolutely the best IMO.
I believe one of the finest albums Ralph played was with James Burton (corn pickin’ and slick slidin’) they complemented each other so well it always brought a tear whenever I listened to it. Never shy abt how music made me feel, other things not so much.
Interesting conversation here... Regarding the Paul Franklin picking, well, it just kind of comes with possessing that particular talent. He is a humble guy and can play with the very best of the great steelers. Herby Wallace, Paul and others are just unbelievably talented pickers and they use it for effect. Pedal Steel Guitars seem to me to have the sweetest sound of all the instruments (stringed or otherwise) and their massive warmth exudes most when being played very simply and sweetly.
iv'e heard Dave before and your 100% right he is one fine ass steel player , his buddy John Stannard can really play a mean Telecaster as well, i was wondering if perhaps you've heard another Englishman who has some clips on the tube by the name of Tony Browne, he may be even better than Dave, look him up and give a listen. This is a great clip of a true master and one classic tune..
This isn't to take anything away from Ralph Mooney but for you steel fans, there is another very fine steel player on CZcams..find him under davepedalsteel....David Hartley. I was astonished when I first found his videos...I think you'll enjoy his music too.
It's nice to see so many other people enjoyed Ralph's playin' as much as I did. He was a huge reason for Waylon's success I think he was the greatest musician of all time. I don't mean to brag but, I've got his autograph!
And buck Owen’s success!
@@curtisboggs8164 And Merle Haggard's too.
I'm not sure anyone could do it better. What a great tune.
I like his sound. Simple, straightforward, no BS.
Ralph made the steel guitar sing ever so sweetly. The best ever. RIP Moon.

Sounds like heaven to me. With a tear in my eye, and a smile on my face this is just absolutely beautiful. Thank you Ralph Mooney for all the great music.
Thank you to the creator of this video. It was wonderful hearing my Uncle Moon's voice and seeing him one time.
Ralph's Playing Style and Creativity along with Studio B's capturing ability will live on forever in the minds of Traditional Country Music Lovers..
My goodness. The honesty in his playing... I got goose bumps that just won't go away. God bless.
Love this tune - and Ralph Mooney's playing is glorious!
Best steel player ever!
My dad loved his playing and he heard alot and played as well. He said Mooney's the Best!
Thanks to Ralph and all the other legends behind this amazing instrument 👍👏👏👏👏👏🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸🥃
Folks, the country music we all remember is gone and we will we never hear the likes of it again.

Yes,Bobby is one of the greats, and a really nice guy...
Loved Ralph Monney..He was Waylon Jennings main stay.⚘🙏

He was amazing when I heard him in Farmington, NM back in June of 1968, as he was backing up Wynn Stewart. What an incredible performance!!
my poppa played like this when he was younger. he was amazing and he still is when i can get him to play. though not as fast as he used to be, he can still make his dobro (he sadly sold his pedal steels) sing like an angel. i've decided to take it up in his place and carry on his work. i've already learned steel guitar rag :D and i've only played for a few months. i want to learn some of the newer age country too but only the stuff with a real heartfelt message too it. thats what true country is
long live the Moon!!! he's playin' steel for the best talent ever now!!!
So beautiful. You're the best Ralph.

Don't get any better than this.
Fantastic!!

This is pure Gold...!
Perfection at it's best. The Great Ralph Mooney. RIP.
The king of steel
Just like it, I remember when the song first came out and as always Ralph, great job.
I love that song
Ralph was true innovator on the pedal steel guitar (the high G# string on the E9th tuning). He not only added a lot to Waylon's sound, but also to Buck Owens', Merle Haggard's, and Wynn Stewart's sound too.
Pure, smooth and straight from the heart.

RALPH MOONEY
Hey what a pleasant surprise, I didn't anything about this guy other than he cowrote this song. Great playing and very nice recording quality, thanks.
he had a really nice sound.
The best ever from the heart.
In my book, Ralph was the best steelman ever. And Crazy Arms? That song could be 20 minutes long and I'd never tire of it.
Heavenly - in more ways than one....
Thanks, Moon....
RIP Mooney, you were the absolute best! Waylon has his sideman back.
The one & only Ralph Mooney! Genius !!!!
lovely
Ry Cooder brought me here with his song about Mooney, 'Prodigal Son'...
"Crazy Arms" was a milestone song for Ray Price.
--- Prior to "Crazy Arms", you could hear Ray tryin' to sound like Ol' Hank. "Crazy Arms" gave Ray his own brand of Honky-Tonk.

Great playing!
Mooney is the best ever. Sweet.
TO THA MOON !!
That high and lonesome Western sound.
More steel and less politics!!
my new t shirt!
Word.
So much happier now that I don't pay any attention to politics - it doesn't solve anyones problems.
used to love hearing Waylon holler; " eat your heart out Haggard" hahahahahahahaahahh
Davebow Hol why? Waylon couldn't shine Haggard's shoes.
......because Ralph worked for Haggard. Left Him to go work for Waylon.........that's why. lol
That's funny. The first million selling album in Nashville hung on Waylon's wall, not Merle's.
Moon played with Wynn Stewart for several years, recorded with Haggard on his first 4 albums and was on part of one tour with Haggard is all. He played a lot of sessions then Richie Albright heard Moon playing one night and fell all over himself getting to him to see who that was. Hot damn, but that's good stuff, Maynard!
Moon and Tom Brumley the best
One more on that list, John Hughey's "crying steel!"
love

Great photos! Music, of course.
That's like getting a transfusion of soul!
