Really helpful thank you so much!
it helped me a lot, thanks.
i'm alittle dyslexic so things like this is gold.
for whatever reason, when i select clipping mask and try to paint within the boundaries of the drawing underneath,it doesn't follow the contour. It just paints all over it like there is no clipping mask
3 years after and it is still very helpful
Extremely helpful in how straight to the point and easy it was to understand. Thank you! 👍

I was looking for a video to learn what is a clipping mask in photoshop and how does it work when I found your video. I like how you explained it. It made sense to me.

Thank you.
Great video! Still helpful 🙂
Hi Galen, thank you for sharing! I do have a question: when I was painting in the clipping mask, it was not possible to see what was being painted until I released the clipping mask and then I saw the bunch of strokes...
thx
So with text, you do the same thing only with a nice large blocky font. I'm trying to figure out how to get some words on a poster to "clip through" a layer that is basically a frame for the text, and to reveal the background layer of the image in the shape of the words. It's tough..
Thanks so much for that! Liked and subbed. Would you silhouette the arm as a different layer, or silhouette the whole character in its entirety?
It depends on the needs of the illustration, imo. If you know you won't need the character on multiple layers, then you can do it all on one layer. But if you need or prefer to keep it in different layers, there's nothing wrong with doing that, either. Thanks for the comment!
Very informative, thank you!
why isn't my clipping mask working photoshop, I colour in the mask but it doesn't show up.
What if we do it inverse.. The clip we made is going to be cut off
Haha I have spent 5 years trying to learn this!
how did he changed opacity while dragging the brush at 2:10?
Hey Alan! This was done with the pressure sensitive drawing tablet I use. With that brush, I have it set up to become more opaque the harder I press on the brush.
How do I use a clipping mask on a GIF?
You would either need to do it in a video editing software that can edit gifs, or you would need to open your animation window in photoshop and apply the effect to every frame of the gif.
This made no sense. Still do not understand
