Enjoyed the vid! Question: can this be done entirely within geolayers 3 (without using google earth studio)?
Hi,
Thanks so much for this! Do you mind doing a video on how Eastory does his animated historical maps?
Thanks
Asa.
Great suggestion! I'll try and put something together.
Hey Asa! I've worked with Eastory on his Timeghost contributions - he unfortunately doesn't use After Effects, but I can say that he starts with a base map and marks it up in INSANE detail. One of his map bitmaps made my fairly modern workstation kneel. A more motion design-y way to do that might be composite those details in After Effects, with keyframeable shape layers. I never asked what software he animates in to be honest, but his real trick is the insane amount of detail. Try out a design bootcamp of some sort (I loved School of Motion's, but it's pricey) and you can definitely accomplish similar results.
@@wigglybymotiondesign3368
Hi,
Thank you so much for that information!
I had my suspicions that he was using something else as his maps were so large and detailed that I was unsure an average computer could handle it! I have actually bought a plug in for after effects that make map animations a breeze since my previous comment, so at the moment I am learning how to do that. But thanks again because I am interested in doing similar things to what Eastory does and now I have a clearer idea on how he does it.
Thanks!!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.

how did you make that "paris-1944" logo really need to know expecting answer as soon as possible :)
Continuously Rasterize your layers before export! Get that maximum smoothness between comps, especially those from image sequences.
Ah! Thanks man. :)
Could you please provide the Title sequence for download, I'm having a real issue trying to make it myself!
Thank you
i did it as per your iinstruction on zeroing the position and orientation still my image is not showing up. I selected the 3D Layer and linked it to the Null TrackPoint.
oh gad. u guys are amazing. .
Thank you for the comment!
thank a lot
You're welcome!
Thank you for this helpful video! When I run the script file in AE and import the image sequence, my track points seem to lag behind the movement of the map. I have tried everything and cannot seem to fix this issue. Doyou have any idea of what I am doing wrong?
UPDATE: I had to stretch the image sequence by a factor of 129% to get it to match the camera layer... I have no idea why it was running at a faster speed. It consistently imports at a faster speed. At least I have a workaround now
Hmmm that's not a good fix. Did you check the frame rates? Also, when you import as an image sequence, you might have to manually change the FPS after that as well.
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
thank u soooo much

Operation market garden? Sounds intense.
@@BooneLovesVideo yeah its going to take a while. Want to upload it on 17th September
@@SandervkHistory I have no idea what you're talking about.
@@BooneLovesVideo Operation Market Garden was the biggest Airborne invasion of world war 2. The operation began on 17th september 1944. So i will do a documentary about that. With the map animation you tought me 😄👌
@@SandervkHistory haha YES! I'm glad someone has the facts when it comes to history. Send me the link when you're done. Clearly I need to learn a thing or two about WWII history.
amazing. can we use the 3d data in 3d softwares ?
Not entirely sure, but there are a bunch of Blender plugins that allow you to import this content as well.
Thanks for this video, I have a request to you that kindly reply me how to open street map animat in after effects
Hey there, may I know which vox episode is this? Thanks in advance
Not based on a particular episode. I plan on doing more specific examples though.
Hey Boone, can you show how to grow an area/polygon on a map over time? Like let's say you wanted to show an accurate overlay of the Axis forces across Paris, which would look more like an amorphous blob, and you want to lerp the edges of that blob to match the movement of the front over time-- any suggestions? Thanks!
I can definitely do that. I'm planning on doing more WWII style maps, so I'll incorporate this. You can essentially do what I did with the mask animation over the flag.
@@BooneLovesVideo thanks- I have an idea for a story that would also show the spread/range of something across a continent over time. I’m starting with really old reference graphics showing the lines across the continent at years 1960, 1970, etc.
That said, I won’t be starting with a KML, but I think it would be useful to have KMLs to show the progressing “range over time” (at least at certain intervals, i.e. not necessarily continuously) in other formats, too.
Is there a workflow that could work for KML-to-masks? Because from there, as you mentioned, it’s just a matter of adding lerping between those amorphous masks (that you said you’d cover in your reply).
Thanks!
