  • When you visit the The Sutter Buttes in Northern california, or if you are a local it is imortant to understand the land is sacred. The Sutter Buttes are a small circular complex of eroded volcanic lava domes which rise as buttes above the flat plains of the Sacramento Valley in Sutter County, Northern California. They are situated just outside Yuba City in the northern part of the state's Central Valley. The Natative American indians it was called Maidu`s Spirit Mountain. The Maidu Indians called the Sutter Buttes "Histum Yani," which translates to Spirit. Although technically not a “mountain. Sutter Buttes are the smallest mountain range in the world.

if you look at the sutter buttes on google earth and relate them to Mt. Shasta they're connected by plate tectonics somehow. Interestingly the diameter of the entire Mt. Shasta is almost exactly the same diameter if you draw a circle around the Buttes.

There are many archaeological sites on the Buttes , but you would really have to look hard to find them. Just like Mt Shasta it is a very sacred Mountain. Legend said it use to "Sing" and many ghost / spirits were said to reside. There is a large cavern mentioned by the natives also , probably deep underground. Another lesser known mystical is thumb rock on lower Lake Clementine.

Wow. No wonder I've always felt called toward those mountains on the way to Williams CA. I hope The Middle Mountain hike trails are considered a respectful distance from the central range itself. I'd love to pay the Sierra Buttes a respectful visit.

@@pandabear1341 But let's not make light of the fact that there is very dangerous evil out there. The Natives knew this also.

it doesn't matter about the sacred ness because they're all private now. nobody can even go into them anyway.

Absolutely. Private land to this place is as blasphemous as if privatizing Shastas summit or a beach. Should be a national or state park.

@@AuRowe So that uncountable flocks of tourists can ruin it like Yosemite? No thanks. Anyone who is serious about seeing them can go on the private hikes. Its nice that they've been preserved so well with time.

Back in the 70's I used to hike (trespass) in the Buttes in the spring when it looked like Ireland. Cattle rustling was a big problem and watchmen were posted but I never ran into anyone on numerous hikes. I don't believe the Buttes are any kind of spiritual holy land any more than I believe that there is some kind of Holy Land in the Middle East, I don't know and Wintun and Maidu didn't know and neither does the Pope, none of use do, but, I know I don't know,

Sacred to them, maybe. If you're not religious/ritual such things don't matter and shouldn't be pushed on others. To me it's just a fascinating geological monument.

they're no sacred at all. They just turn to be the "eye" of the creature.
