A walk around the West Cemetery of Highgate. Filmed in April and June 2014, and takes in most of the monuments restored/repaired under the restoration programme of 2010-2014. And some that were not repaired!
Tamara Figge Hi this cemetery is so beautiful, but there's no information on where it is , and how old , I was wondering if you could tell me ? Thank you for your kindness , God bless you . I'm from Canada . ❤️
Highgate Cemetery Hi just watching your beautiful video, I was wondering where this certainly was at ,and how old ? Thank you for sharing God bless you , I'm from Canada. ❤️
Highgate opened in May 1839 with the first interment of Elizabeth Jackson. It situated on Swains Lane, Highgate, London, N6 6PJ. It comprises two cemeteries, the West was the above mentioned in 1839 followed by the East in 1854. The main entrances sit directly opposite one another. The movie is solely of the West cemetery and this is accessible only by guided tour. The East has an entrance fee but one is allowed to wander freely. All details can be found on the official website at highgatecemetery.org
Thanks for the tour without music and commentary....just the sounds of nature, feels like Iam visiting there by myself!.. Love Highgate it's so Gothic and beautiful, I always wanted to visit the place!
This walk about tour of the cemetery grounds is simply beautiful. Very finely and exquisitely captured. ....made even more wonderful by the sound of nature in the Background.
From the main entrance to the exquisite Circle of Lebanon and all the minor alleys, this Cemetery is a real masterpiece. It is an open air museum of funeral arts. Thanks for sharing.
The vary first grave on the tour is James Selby, famous coachman and my great grandfather. I live in Australia now so it’s a very long way to visit him!
The Beer mausoleum was built for, Ada Sophia Beer, who died at the age of 8 from Scarlet fever. Inside is a beautiful sculpture of an Angel enfolding her and raising her to heaven. Later Julius and other family members were laid to rest inside. Imagine what it would cost today to commission such a magnificent monument.
Beautiful Highgate, I was lucky enough to visit in 1984, we had a brief tour and then were able to explore on our own. It was still being cleared up and a very cold damp day which added to its melancholy feel. The next time I went in 2010, we went on the tour, but it was quite short.
To me, Highgate is the most enigmatic, gorgeous, and historic of all renowned cemeteries I had been to. The West is my most favourite part. Thank you for taking me back once more through this lovely video. Greetings from SEA!
Thank you so much...stunning video...like everyone said I love the actual sounds with no music or commentary. I have wanted to go here since I was 12 and fell in love with Hammer horror films. I am sharing this!..This is posted under my hubby's name I am Dina Dotson
This video is amazing -- thank you so much! I used to visit often around 2002 and it was difficult enough to get the ladies to allow me to take a pic, never mind footage. Felt like i was taking a stroll with you. Love that you got up to Radclyffe Hall & Mabel B a couple of times..definitely very significant denizens. Thanks...X
Thank you for uploading this walk 👍🏻 💌 I did this fascinating tour a few years back, and the friends of the cemetery guide, who took us on the guided tour, were so full of amazing historical facts , also on the nature in the grounds and architecture of some amazing stonework, they were fantastic. If you are ever visiting North London this is so very worth doing comfy walking boots a drink.... Time almost stops it is serene & tranquil.... With some history that's worth hearing and famous and not so famous people entered there 👊💪👄🤘💃🏻👓🎓🎩💍💼🍺⚽️🎾🏏🏊🏻🏇🎭🎤🎨🎹🎻⚓️🚂🛳📺📻🎙🎥📷☠ And after walk up the hill to a lovely warm pub 🤗🤓👍🏻 P.s not for the faint hearted as it can be quite graphic at times 🤔💀🙈
I find it mind boggling, the amount of money spent on building these sepulchres and tombs. Even allowing for the cost of labour back then, some of them must have cost as much, or more than a house, given that they're made of shaped and carved Portland stone, granite, marble etc, roofed in stone and designed to last for eternity. How much was an angel carved on your headstone? Or a sleeping lion? I suppose some of them must have been mass produced in some form, as I see angels bending over graves in other cemeteries, but that sleeping angel laying on a bed of tomb with all the ripples and folds like fabric. Unbelievable. The Victorian way of death indeed. Thankyou for such an interesting and inspiring film.
I think the artisans who worked on them were very thankful for the work that enabled them to care for their families . I would like to know more about them.
I visited Highgate cemetery back in the early 2000s, was a place I'd wanted to see for some time as it was featured in a few of my favourite hammer horror films. When I finally got to see the place I was rather shocked by the poor condition of some of the crypts and monuments, the place was also very overgrown with weeds and brambles. I think the work of 'the friends of Highgate cemetery' must be highly commended, this place is looking fantastic and some of the repairs undertaken couldn't have been an easy task, well done.
Wow, mixer feelings here, at one hand its marvelous, on the other is spooky as hell! I thought I was not superstitious but I would not wander here at night for sure!
Sandra Nelson YES GRAVEYARDS ARE HAUNTED BY THE LIVING!!! THIS IS ONE PEACEFUL TOUR THAT I AM ENJOYING!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS BEAUTIFUL VIDEO!!!!!
Thank you for this great vid, I visited this part once but had to stay with the guided tour so didn't get to see all the spooky details such as the vaults. Amazing work! Thanks again for showing
Awesome video of highgate cemetery it's a shame that some parts of it are overgrown and the whole place needs to be tidied up but a great video none the less thanks keep em coming
Gary Sweeney most at some point we’re broken into, but now have doors and locks. For the purpose of this video a few were left open and doors pinned back for ease of access with camera. If you have one crypt in particular which you refer to, places let me know whereabouts it is in the video.
It could just be "background" noise, but at different parts of the video, I could SWEAR I heard (in no particular order), a man screaming, moaning, faint laughter, and rattling chains. Beautiful cemetery, but definitely not a place I would want to be wandering around after dark!
