    Hey Joey! I was having the absolute hardest time getting a razer blade to fit between panels, it was chipping the edges of the glass and causing all sorts of problems (shortage of bandaids). However I was determined to find a way and it turns out floss moves through effortlessly! Hope this helps in the future and anyone with the same issue as me.

    Thanks to this, I just took apart an old 30 gallon I pulled out of my dad's storage unit. It has to have been in there for a good 20 years, so I didn't even bother trying to fill it first. One side panel started coming loose while scraping out the old silicon, so a reseal turned into a rebuild. Poop.
    It might be the only aquarium ever without a gap around the bottom piece. The four sides sit on top of the bottom pane, making it a pane (yuk yuk) to disassemble.
    Now, off to see how to put it back together. Thanks.

    Trying to make an internal filter across the back wall of my Marineland 75gal . Because if the center brace, I can't just drop the false wall in. it's 47.5"w x 19.375"h. I tried on a slant, but it gets stopped by that plastic center brace about half way.
    Trying to come up with workarounds like taking the top rim off and re-siliconing it after the filter is done. or cutting my filter wall in half, doing half at a time all inside the tank, somehow joining them together afterward This will likely leave a seam showing at best case.
    Can I cut a small section of the center brace out, slide the wall in, then glue s piece of plastic over the cut area ?
    How much does the tank depend on this remaining untouched ?

    Hey Joey, Anything? Well, I got thru reading some of these questions and posts. I see down below that Benjamin Maether asked you 9 months ago, a similar question and you told him to first set the bottom pane (I'm assuming on top of frame) then build/add the other panes around it.
    However, wouldn't the silicone smear off bottom pane's edge, when the all the sides are slid down into frame? I think it would have been best if you also included the part "How to put that tank back together inside the trim". Well, I haven't heard from you as of yet. I am sure you are swamped with many request. I also bought the "Bar keepers" glass cleaner as you demonstrated on another video. Cleaned glass best i could. I have everything ready and setup. I'm a little frantic, but I will try to do this on my own. Thank you in either case. May you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a bles-sed new year.

    Hey Joey, I have a quick question for you. I just bought a used Marineland 265. It had some silicone around the bottom trim in one corner and side piece and that worried me but the fella said the trim had come loose and he siliconed it back on but didn't have clamps to pull it close to the glass . He said there was no leak. I just got done pulling off the side trim and there was definitely a leak. The question is, can I just remove the bottom glass, clean it and put it back on followed by a complete internal reseal or should I take the whole thing apart. I didn't know it was a Marineland tank when I bought it. It is an 84 inch long tank so I thought it was custom built. Now I am reading about Marineland horror stories...

My question is: now that the silicone is hard and dry, what can I do to clean up the mess from inside the tank? And what about the outside of the thank? Because I used quite a lot of silicone, I have some on the outside of the aquarium, where the glass panels meet. I did smooth it out when it was fresh with my finger. My buddie gave me his fathers tank (his father passed away). Its a nice 50 gallon. His dad just globbed silicon on top of the old silicone but it looked bad and still leaked. I think since the glass is in real good shape just making it rimless would make it look pretty sweet.

  • @MusicMinisterJP7
    @MusicMinisterJP7 Před 8 lety

    Hello Sir, Mr. Joey, Congratulations on a very well array of aquarium projects. Perhaps you might be able to help me and any other person facing this dilemma. So please bare with me.
    In this video you have shown "How to take an aquarium apart".. and pretty much it all went well for me on mine, as mine was exactly the same but a in 55 gal.
    However, putting it back together seems a different story. I must apologize, I don't know to this point if You have made a video putting this tank back together, afterwards. If you have, please by All means point me in its direction ASAP.
    The thing here is, that normally the building of tanks I have seen so far do not consist of tanks using the top and lower frames, as in this video. Tanks I've seen on CZcams basically seem to follow a trend of Frame-less aquariums. Simply put, bottom pane on flat surface, then all other panes get glued either on top or to the sides and taped to hold!
    Now, the tank I have is thick 3/8" glass. Very heavy. Its 12-3/4" wide and the 48" long. The 48" long front and rear panes along with the left and right panes actually sit inside plastic wood decor frame. The bottom/floor pane sits on frame, putting it 3/4" higher up on the other glass panes. Here in lies my dilemma, how to re-assemble inside frame?
    As per your advice (and a good one) in regards to when you buy a used tank, I have stripped away all the old silicone in order to re-seal it. Incidentally, it seemed someone tried sealing this tank before, but with black silicone. This, and what made me look into these videos was, that as tank filled with water and left it sit with filters running a week, I noticed rear pane bowed out just over a 1/4", and this tank doesn't have the cross support brace.
    So I emptied it and allowed it to dry a few days. After I had stripped away the old black sealant I notice the adhesive sealant was a clear type, but most importantly, the bond had separated, had detached or otherwise lost its ability to hold glass panes together. I realized the integrity of the tank was no longer safe in its condition. So I have stripped and separated all glass panes. I have cleaned Everything and I am ready to re-assemble tank, but I am not certain of how to correctly do it.
    For adhesion of the glass I have and will be using GE SCS1200 silicone. This will just be for the 1/8" seam on All edges. I am looking to restrict that silicone to the edges by using painters tape along. After thoroughly dried or cured, I'll trim the squeezed out excess, remove tape, wipe edges with alcohol, re-tape 1/2" along all edges. Here I plan to use GE 100% silicone 1. This should leave this tank in a condition to function perhaps another 18 yrs. This description is just my opinion. But, I would really appreciate if you showed me the video of you putting this tank back together inside bottom frame. Thank you for your time.. -John

    Hello Joey, Pierre-Luc from Montréal here! I was wondering, I just de-constructed my old 33 Hagen hexagonal from the 80's (only to find out the stains were so bad I couldn't even wash it with razor blades and bar keeper). So I ordered 6 new glass panels and kept the bottom one and of course the black frames. Now that I have all the pieces ready I was wondering how you'd advise me to start. I was thinking to put a bead of silicone on one side (the one facing down) of the bottom glass and put it on the bottom frame, then insert the 6 panels in the bottom frame (using tape alongside just like you do to hold everyone together) and put the silicone beads against bottom/panel glass. I would then work my way to the top doing the vertical silicone beads (inside and outside) and then put the top black frame and apply its silicone bead on the inside part of the tank last, What do you think? I am mostly concerned about the first part as I hope there will be enough silicone entering the 90 degree angle between the panels and the bottom glass. Thanks!

    I'm having a lot of trouble taking off the rim of my 90 gallon tank. I was going to clean it, reseal, and then put the rim back. But I can't seem to get past taking the rim off! I've done quite a few passes around the whole tank with paint scrapers and then a razor blade, but I can still lift the tank just by lifting the trim. Not sure what to do... :(

    I know this is an old video but i have a 125 tank that was passed down to me for a terrarium because it split two seams. I want to fix it back into a water worthy aquarium again so i feel like a total rebuild is best since its such a big tank. My issue is how do i get the bottom of the aquarium right? I know theres about an inch of a gap in the bottom of the aquarium from the bottom where it sits on the stand. How do i go about making sure i make the gap the same when i reseal it? I know its probably a simple thing but it has me worried. Do i just silicone the bottom glass onto the plastic bottom and then silicone the edges onto the surface of the bottom glass? Also how many tubes of silicone would i need for a 6 foot 125 gallon tank, i was thinking 4 or 5. I would love to be able to fix this aquarium, a 125 is a big tank for an average aquarist haha

    What do I do if the top trim is broken and ugly? Can I leave it off my 25 gallon? I need to reseal it too it's a mess but it was basically free so I'm hoping to make it nice again. But I'm not sure if I need to fully take it apart and redo it or just reseal it though.

    I have a 125 gallon tank that the seem and seal failed. I need to rebuild it, not a problem. but it has the trim on the bottom that raises the bottom panel a 1/4 higher than the side panels meet. if that makes sense. when I rebuild the tank, do I need to make it fit the trim. is the bottom trim needed? or can I just rebuild it without it.

    ok what's the trick for putting the bottom glass back? do i build it without the trim then put the trim back? the bottom is recessed a certain distance that has to be perfect to match the trim? or how do i reassemble it inside the trim so it fits the recess perfectly? anybody know? or i will have to bite the bullet and buy a new tank? my thinking at this point is to shim the bottom up to what seems the right distance, build the tank, then reinstall the trim the next day, hoping i didn't recess the glass too much...

  • @KrispyAquascape

    Tried this on a 10 gal as an experiment and ended up cracking 2 corner piece. Could it be that brand new aquariums have a stronger seal than used ones? The only silicone left really was the one attaching the trim in the middle. Such a small spot for a strong @$$ seal. After a hour of pulling and sliding a very thin knife back to back, I gave up and started pulling hard. What amazed me was that the seal was so strong that the trim started to bend and all of a sudden x.... Bigger tanks may be easier too because the corner isn't so compact into a foot. I may try this on a bigger tank one day.

    • @thekingofdiy
      @thekingofdiy  Před 9 lety +3

      Small tanks are.....well, the worst to take apart. Its not uncommon to break them and its VERY easy to crack one. With that said, I'm glad you learned first hand... you got to see what it takes to take one apart and the pressure it takes to break one. Nothing i show or explain in a video could have taught you that.
      With that said... i bet you have a new found respect for the strength of silicone!
      PS: Yes, big tanks are FAR easier to take apart.

    My Walmart 10 gallon turned out to be tempered glass on the side, non-tempered(what's it called) on the bottom. I figured out the hard way that you cannot cut tempered glass with little effort... Basically, it explodes and glass goes everywhere. By random chance I cut the bottom first and had great results, then wondered what the hell was going on when I tried to cut the sides. Guess I'll have to order my glass cut to size to build my aquarium bridge between a 29 and a 20 long. Bummed!
