    Even if a 14 year old "just ran away" how can police be fine with it and stop searching? 😳 'Yeah, she's 14 and out in the streets, all alone, without money or support - nothing to worry about.' 🤦🏻‍♀️

      Super weird! I understand it for 18 year olds plus,but children are meant to be in the custody of a responsible adult no? Plus- other 14 year olds can’t rent or own houses- so wherever they think she ran around to- they’re an adult who effectively kidnaped a child

    • @ellespoonies
      @ellespoonies Před 5 lety +31

      that's what pisses me off. they're still a minor and whether they chose to run away or not they need to verify their safety before dismissing them as a runaway. there are situations where teens run away from abusive homes and in those cases bringing them home would do more harm, but we should still look for these runaways and at least let these teens decide where they want to live once their safety has been secured. it's so sad that when people go missing they're so easily dismissed as runaways despite the fact that even runaways can be in extremely dangerous situations.

      That actually was not the law at the time, just laziness and heartless, I work in Law Enforcement. Honestly I see missing reports on juveniles missing less then twenty four hours now and years ago, as I work in records so I have access to older cases. I think police departments make it up as it suits them honestly. I honestly don't think their is a hard fast law if that makes sense, my dad is a retired lawyer. I don't think their was ever a law ever if that makes sense, like a real law. It is procedure they were never following a law. Sorry for the long post. In essence they were telling these families over decades their was a law when it was only procedure on their part and they were not following any law and they claimed they were.

    • @nunyabidness8656
      @nunyabidness8656 Před 5 lety +24

      Nichole Alderfer it's honestly messed up that so many police stations will inform family members of missing persons that they must wait 24 hours (or whatever amount of time they make up) before they can make a report. This is not true in any of the countries I've researched, yet sadly we hear about families being told this all the time.

This is a beyond frustrating case with basically no answers to this day! How dare the investigators presume Misty is just a run away based on her mother's past! • @antoinettemur
    @antoinettemur Před 5 lety +295

    Even if Misty was a runaway, I don't like the way police handle runaway cases. If we're talking about a minor, they still need to be found and brought back home to their parents/guardians. Parents should be given help and support to find runaways too because that child is not responsible enough to be on their own. Telling a parent to wait 30 days because their child is a runaway is dismissive and can cause more harm or prevent a child from being found and saved. It;s such a shame.

    • @sg-cg6lr
      @sg-cg6lr Před 4 lety +1

      Seems like the 30 days is false. Here in north America it's 24 hours.
      I keep thinking of back way back in the day when a child went missing the whole community would stop get together and search for the missing. Nowadays if your child goes missing youre on your own to search. Maybe caused by these large soulless cities we've created. Heartbreakingly crushing.

    • @_happy_days_790
      @_happy_days_790 Před 3 lety

      But also maybe the child has a reason to run away...
      The police forcefully dragging them back could make things 1000% worse
      Edit*(obviously in cases like Misty's they should look into things becuase its pretty obvious that shes not a runaway. some minors run away from abuse controlling parents and can handle life on their own / have a place they can stay away from home. Just saying I was a minor when I left home, and it was the best decision of my life.
      not all of them need to be found and retuned)

    • @antoinettemur
      @antoinettemur Před 3 lety

      @@_happy_days_790 true, but that's all the more reason to find them. Running away could potentially put the child in more harm. Maybe once a child is found as a runaway, they should be put in some sort of program or therapy, or maybe linked with a social worker who could get to the root of the issue because you're right; if they are running away, they obviously feel like something isn't right at home.

    Hey Georgia, i left a comment on your last video but since it wasn’t a mystery week video I figured I’d also post it here! I would really love/be honored if you could do a video on the death of one of my cousins. Her name was Brenda Sue Schaefer and she was killed in 1988, I’ve never seen anyone cover her story other than a tv show here in America. There’s a book on her killer/fiancé called Double Jeopardy and her case is actually extremely sad bc of how the courts/police handled it. I think you are one of the few people who could really do her case justice and I wouldn’t want anyone else covering it. Much love to you girl 💖

I had heard that one reason the killer was found not guilty is because the jury was tired and wanted to go home, the winter holidays were approaching, and they just wanted to get out of there so rushed the deliberations. AntaA...the friend is a little sketch but you have to think...they were 14yo girls who were making bad enough decisions as it was (reaching out to men while out at night). I used to be in a similar phase around that age and I made some sketch decisions that could have led to horrible things... sometimes a "friend" gets side tracked with their own selfish choices, putting themselves before their friend(s). That is a tricky age and kids that age can be selfish and obviously naive. The worst thing about the friend IMO is lying at the beginning about the night her friend went missing... she should have fessed up 100% for her friend whether it made her look bad or not. Again, selfish and naive age.

    Gary Ridgeway was a commercial painter, and one of the ways they identified him was through the unique red paint chips and particles found on the victims and their clothes. This would also be about the time the Green River Killings would have started up again after a few quiet years. Even though Ridgeway tended to hunt prostitutes and strippers along the Sea-Tac highway, I think it wouldn't hurt authorities to interview him about this case. I bolted up right away when you mentioned the red paint chips, so I just wanted to share my suspicions. Anyway, a very well presented, well researched case, keep up the good work!

    The fact that she had adult men around who were known to be interested in children, and at least one of those men specifically interested in Misty herself, makes me think immediately that it was probably one of them. If it wasn't a serial killer, my money would be on Reuben. I agree that I don't think she ran away, and the police did an amazingly shoddy job of investigating. So much ego involved and it got in the way of solving the disappearance, and likely murder, of a young girl. I wouldn't be too surprised, either, if this were a serial killer because of the other two girls and some of the circumstances surrounding Misty's disappearance and the other girls' murders. I'm definitely leaning toward serial killer the most, but yeah the fact that there was a pedophile around her who was known to be sexually interested in her and who had in the past made that interest known to her makes me very suspicious, too. I hope my comment makes sense, I'm a little bit all over the place here, sorry about that!

      Juniper see I get mixed feelings. Like my grandparents started dating when my grama was 14 and my grampa was 18, but he didnt act like this. He was respectful and Im pretty sure they didnt have sex until she was 17 because they didnt believe sex was important to a relationship. Ruban sounds like all he wanted was the sex. To me 18 and 15 is better just because everyones bodies tend to be finished maturing at that age, but even then its concerning because you never know if someone has bad intintions and wants to only take advantage. I dated many boys who were 18 when I was 14 and I thought it was normal, but all they wanted were nudes and sex. I am now 18 and I can understand a bit more on who is taking advantage and who isnt, its just sometimes 2 people genuinly fall for personality while they are a few years younger, and sometimes they just want sex. Its horrible and confusing.

    I live in Washington State, about an hour away from Puyallup, and you're pronouncing it better than most out-of-state people. :) Thanks for the great, detailed video. You should do the Lindsey Baum case, an unsolved abduction of a child in McCleary, Washington, very close to where I live. She disappeared in 2009, but her bones were just found this year on the other end of the state, about a 4-5 hour drive from where she was abducted. No one knows who abducted and killed her.

    • @mookbonganon
      @mookbonganon Před 5 lety +8

      Yes please! I had a run in with a young man whom I believe is responsible for Lindsay. I was in McCleary the night she went missing. She used to walk my dog with her friend. This guy met my friend on plenty of fish and we were outside on her porch. She was wearing a rubber support bracelet for Lindsay. He saw it and said, "why the f*ck are wearing that?" She said "I want to support her and hope she is found." He said, "F*ck that b*tch! She ruined my life! I lost my job because of that b*tch! I was investigated and it ruined my life." There are extensive records regarding this guy online that make him seem very suspicious in this case. I know it is him. They just don't have any physical evidence.

    Every time I hear a guy whistle or call out to me I immediately get uncomfortable and fear the worst. Just the other day I was getting into my car and heard a guy trying to get my attention. I ignored it, and pretended that I didn't hear him, but he was persistent, so I finally had to turn around. It was actually a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in a really long time, so I was glad that I ran into him, but I still went into panic mode. I didn't even recognize him at first. I have had several shady encounters with complete strangers over the years though, so I feel my reaction is more than justified. I've had guys ask me to give them a lift, and of course I turn them down. Once this happened when I was on my way to a friends house, I get to my friends house and then this guy shows up. Apparently he knew her, and was a straight up jerk to me because I didn't give him a ride, but I definitely wasn't going to take that risk. The worst was when I was only 18 though. I was sitting at a gas station not paying attention to my surroundings at all, and suddenly there was a guy in the car with me. I'd never seen this guy before, and he's all buddy buddy with me like we know each other. I'm not going to elaborate on what happened next, I've shared the story on other videos and it really messes with me to talk about it, but it was bad. In short, I was convinced that I was going to die and never be seen or heard from again, but I played it cool and was fortunate enough to make it out of that situation with my life. Every time I see a missing persons poster in my area I wonder if that guy had something to do with it. People, young women especially, really have to be careful out there. Always be mindful of where you are and what's going on around you, and don't under any circumstances take unnecessary risks.

He yelled out at me something like "hey can you get that for me" or "hey can you bring that to me" and stopped about 10 feet away from me. I had heard about abductions and stuff and I was scared (also my 12 year old mind thought that the umbrella was a bomb) so I ran as fast as I could down the road and into some near by woods that you could cut through to get to my house. a couple days later I walked back to where that guy threw the umbrella out and saw that it was 1) an umbrella and 2) still there even though that guy stopped his car to ask me to give it back. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I didn't run away. Was that guy innocent or would I actually have been in grave danger? Idk but cases where kids get abducted off the side of the road like that really scare me because I might have been me
