  • This is a whole process of reproducing Ukiyoe (Japanese Woodblock Printing). But we are using linoleum and stamp ink as the materials.
The artwork was originally created by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 國芳), who lived in the late Edo period in the 19th century. All Kinds of Frogs (かゑるづくし) personified frogs as famous heroes on the Kabuki stage.

Fascinating to see especially in light of the fact that I was querying a few printmakers about how you could imitate the look and feel of Japanese woodblock prints using Lino and they came up empty. Using a sponge to ink the block is a great idea.

I enjoyed watching very much. I do not understand the type of pen you use on the tracing paper to trace and then transfer your key line drawing. I have never seen a drawing transferred so easily onto a lino block!

Great video. Any reason why you you stamp ink instead of a roller and relief ink? Thanks.

what kind of lino are you using? it looks like battleship grey, but far spongier, than traditional linoleum..

I am shocked. I love ukiyo-e and maybe you showed me an alternative way to make some. The material for the mokuhanga (woodblock japanese/chinese method) is so expensive and the techniques to print is not easy. That said, I don't know how much cost the material you used ^^ ... I have a question, can we make graduate colors (called bokashi for japanese prints) with Linocut ? I liked the result, the texture looked like japanese paper (washi) ... I need to create !! :D

Absolutely beautiful. Why did you print a white layer over a white paper?

I'm glad you like it! I didn't print a white layer though~ I left the white area to be paper itself :P But thank you for mentioning this!
