As a mini painter myself i will always appreciate the models when they come out. Excellent work and they really do help the story
Let’s get this man more subscribers! Most underrated history channel on CZcams.
I did not realise the extent of the predatory slave trade that plagued the the channel in those times.
@@cuanmccarogher4926 That was the biggest slave trade in history, FAR outweighing the African slave trade. They used to come north all the time to England/costs of north west Europe for slaves (and south europe of course too), and bring them back to the Islamic south to be sold as slaves.
Yes. The history he discusses is all enjoyable and I think a important bit of history or history review! Like flipping open a page in from a good old book.
Hard to imagine how that sort of combat would play out as fighting men scrambled onto enemy ships, amongst hoards of arrows and other projectiles, from both sides to engage in total mayhem hand to hand! Thanks for bringing it to life.
Well done Kevin! Again! You bring history alive for us. Thank you. I'll take your models, and your stories over any CGI presentation. There is no substitute for a passion for history.
Man I love you Kevin Hicks, a great teacher, story teller, and the fire of the love of England within you. I hope this channel blows up. God bless you!
The Edwardian phase of the 100 years war really was just one English victory against all odds after another
That's for sure. I'm asked if I can cover some French victories, but chronologically, I haven't encountered any yet 😜
@@thehistorysquad
It's strange because a greatly outnumbered French army won a major battle at Saint-Omer in 1340 and the French withstood the siege of Tournai on the same year...
Hi there, thanks for watching the video. As I understand it, the Saint Omer battle was mainly a French/Flemish affair with the English supporting the Flemish and the English left the field pretty much in tact. In due course I will cover the sieges, in which the French were undoubtedly more superior and will most definitely be looking at Joan of Arc too, but for the time being I am concentrating on the main battles, as an Englishman. 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad
Yeah you're probably right about that battle, but I hope you'll be covering the battle of Cocherel!
Good videos nonetheless !
@@thehistorysquad I'm a Spaniard, so I have my preference although I try to be unbiased. After this battle, followed La Rochelle in 1372, a sound Castilian victory. And later a 3 year old campaign (1377-1380) in which admiral Bocanegra of Castile got to the doors of London.
I believe Winchelsea 1350 was the first time the English and the Castilians entered a battle against each other. Let me know if I'm missing something. Thank you for the entertaining video.
7:07 when Kevin starts playing the flute. I thought it was "warm kitty soft kitty" by the Big Bang theory. hahahaha!!
How could a student or viewer not get engrossed in a subject by your enthusiastic presentations. Absolutely fantastic!! Thankyou sir!
Fantastic as always Mr. Hicks. At the end, I imagine also the power of capturing so many vessels, as each is like a small castle and small fortune. No doubt this slice of history was a turning point for the English at sea.
Thanks so much, Kevin, you bring history to life with your great format for models znd story telling but also your costumes which are fantastic. You could start a new fashion trend for medieval clothing.
Hello Keven, hope you are doing well. Loved the presentation. Naval battles are always brutal, as you can't exactly walk home if defeated. In the modern navy, damage control training is given special attention. Hull damage, if your quick, can be repaired and flooding controlled. If you want to know what really scares a sailor, it is fire. The fire destroys electrical equipment, you can no longer pump the water out of the people tank and just breathing becomes an issue. In the submarine service, if your at a shallow enough depth, you can seal the compartment and pump high pressure air in (real hard on the eardrums) and force the water out. I've learned more about the hundred years war, watching your videos, than I did in school. Keep up the great work.
Hi Shar, that's why I joined the army 😉. Joking aside, thanks for the insights into fire on board a ship & sub, as you say, quite terrifying. 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad Served active duty Navy and then Army reserve ( bubblehead and a ground pounder, what a combo).
@5:10 I am reading 'The Stolen Village' by Des Ekin about exactly that. It is about Baltimore town, County Cork, on the south coast of Ireland, which was raided by Ottoman Turkish troops and the infamous Barbary Pirates of their client states.
Sounds like a good book. It's estimated that over a million people were taken into slavery in medieval times. Baltimore as I recall was totally devoid of any living souls, only the dead were left behind by the slavers. 👍🏻
What a battle! Having ships tied to ships and heavy weights being dropped. Truly a horrendous battle to fight.
No kidding Nicholis - did you hang on till the end? I gave you a shout out 😉
@@thehistorysquad I did and I was shocked to hear my name, thank-you
@@nicholisredfern7463 Happy Days 😉. As one of my first Patrons, I thank you again for your support 👍🏻
Great summary (and models) of this 100 Years War sea battle. The English fleets turning the weather gage advantage of the French fleet against them suggests those Anglo-Normans hadn't quite forgotten the tactics that their Viking ancestors used to win sea battles.
Great Film! I’ve been waiting all day for this to drop! Ha! Thank you for all you’re doing on this very entertaining and informative channel! You’ve even inspired me to go and try the longbow for my 30th in October!
Keep it up Kevin!
My pleasure thanks. I hope you enjoy the archery, I'll be adding some more films in the summer 👍🏻
I'm a history teacher, if I could tell a story like you can my lessons would be 10x better!
I love the arrow being used as a pointer.
As a fellow historian, i am so glad to see a focus on the Hundred Years War.
And we all love a bit of great wine, oh yes sir...Awsome work. Greetings from Portugal
All these models! Absolutely brilliant. This channel should be shown in every high school & undergrad history class.
He never misses👏👏
I wish you were my teacher when I was in school. I think I would've been inspired to take learning further. I've learnt more history from CZcams than I ever did in school. Love your videos
I enjoyed history as a subject at secondary school. Thanks for the level of detail you are providing.
You are a true Renaissance man. I like the solutions you come up with, practical and artistic!
Haha, yes. Someone just suggested I use brownies next time and eat the captured vessels 😜
wow these guys lived adventurous lives back then.. imagine being part of this
Being thrown overboard wearing armor and chainmail sounds terrifying
If a picture is worth a thousand words, models that can be moved to show the course of events must be worth a thousand more. Great stuff. Keep it up!
I've honestly never heard of this battle, although I was aware of the scourge of piracy in the Channel at that time, but it's a great feat of arms by the English considering the relative power of the opposing force, and the Castilians were soundly defeated. Bravo on your presentation!
Wow it's already 1am since starting this 100 years war playlist. Captivating story telling.
I am loving this. As a 39 yr old i am learning new things. I mean the courage it must take to go out and have a old school war unbelievable. These videos are well researched and simple in the presentation. And being in costume brings the viewer further in. Thank you
What fine storytelling!I absolutely loved the models and the instruments.Combined with your expert narrating it makes this story one that I could listen to for hours!Keep up the hard work!
I have never missed a episode of the 100 year war so far keep it up good sir.
Never let a day go by.
Greetings once again from nova Scotia, thanks Kevin, this was a very entertaining video. I love the models, keep them coming . Thank you once again, and as always best regards, Arthur
This channel absolutely deserves much more viewership and support. I'm so glad you started a patreon!
ohhh these are fun.... thank you for taking the time to make them good sir! This is heaven sent on cold rainy day when Im stuck inside
The sights AND the sounds of history, combined with storytelling *par exellence*. Bravo!
Dude!!!! I'm so stoked. I love these 100 years war series. I feel about this like I did back when I was watching game of thrones eagerly awaiting for the next episode. hahahaha!
I had never heard of either this battle, or Spanish pirates during the hundred years war. Thanks for another great video.
Sir we couldn't have asked for a better history teacher then you. Can't wait for more of your work
Absolutely love the channel and your enthusiasm for story telling! Keep it up!
Loving the series so far - you're a great storyteller! The recorder tune was a fun touch.
Sir Kevin! You have done it again my good man.
I have learned more from you then I did in school. Lol!
Keep up the good work! God bless you!
Love this station very educational and entertaining!
Loving this series so much! So glad I've found that you have a YT channel, I remember watching an archery video of yours on the english longbow awhile ago and thought you spoke with such good authority, just the right vibe and voice for something like this. Very entertaining! Can see this channel getting popular in no time, especially with the right thumbnails!
The Hundred Years war is my favorite period/subject of the middle ages. I'm also very interested in nautical/sailing history, and these early battles under sail are not often talked about. Wonderful video!
You've got yourself a new subscriber here.
Real models are always better than CGI, and you have a unique charisma. Love it
You're way of presenting and teaching history has reignited my passion for medieval history! Subscribed, and will be sharing with my other metal head friends! Have a great day - all the best, from Scotland :D
I wish I had you as a teacher in school sir. You transport us to the battle field like a good book. Thank you
Sir I must say that I was not disappointed. Your lecture riveting; explanation of tactics employed precise, and the narrative on point. An elderly gentleman could not ask for more. Bravo!
These are such amazing videos. I've been watching you for 10 years+ on youtube from your longbow videos. If you ever need high quality pictures of medieval models (I built and painted many) please let me know! From a fellow longbowman.... cheers!
Well that's very kind of you to offer thank you. Do you have an email we can contact you on? I wouldn't suggest adding it in the comments but if you go to my website historysquad.ca, we have a contact form there and I can get back in touch with you. Appreciated 👍🏻
Wow, that map of the coast line is so different from today! 08:00 Looks like a second Portsmouth and Isle of Wight😃 I didn't realise there was such a large area of land that used to be sea.
Yes, that's for sure. It's an interesting place to tour with a medieval view in mind 👍🏻
Fantastic telling Sir! I loved the models I live in the US and grew up here, but my ancestry is English, and I love her history. Thank you for the video!
I teach in high school and regularly use these videos wherever possible! Absolutely fantastic, riveting loved by pupils and teachers both 😂
I came across this purely by accident and loved it so much I've subscribed. I'm a Carpenter & Joiner and much of my work is around Winchelsea. Little known fact , Old Wichelsea was decimated by the great storm of 1290 (ish) so they relocated Winchelsea to it's present location. The location of Old Winchelsea has been lost in time but some believe it was located on the Broomhill flats (modern day East of Camber). I knew there had been a Battle at Winchelsea as it's on some maps but never knew the real story so thanks for that.
Around 1290 (ish) The French attacked Rye which is around 3 miles form Winchelsea and set the Town ablaze and along with all the valuables they stole they took the Church Bell from St Mary's Church.. The men of Rye were a hardy bunch so they popped over to France, robbed and pilliaged but also bought back the Church Bell of St Mary's church in Rye........ Lesson to the French, don't mess with Sussex Folk. As the old saying goes "You can pook and you can shuv, but Sussex folk wunt be druv".. Meaning that if you push too hard we will bite you in the arse............... Great video and I look forwad to watching more....
Hi Adrian, thanks so much for subbing, I'm glad you liked the film. Great insight in to Winchelsea as well, thanks for that. I knew a bit, but not about the bell - what a great story 👍🏻
Your charm, story telling and videos as a whole are just Fantastic Kevin, Thank you
In the age of sailing ships the ship which had the wind behind it was said to have the weather gauge, an advantage because it gave the upwind ship the choice when and where to engage the enemy.
The greatest way to teach history is through great story telling. One day I'll get there and be able to tell a cracking story as you can!
Ah, thanks Mark - I hope you do. The world needs more great story tellers to keep memories alive 👍🏻
The flute and horn made me realize you really are all talented from the bow, to the pen, to the flute. Amazing stuff! I hope more people can get hooked on these videos like I am!
Your models are second to none. As well as the story telling wgich makes me want to learn more. Keep up the good work Kevin, you're great 😂🎉 ❤❤❤
I love this series
Perfect way to end the day, with another video in this great series
The models are great. They help to picture the events you talk about.
Brutal sea warfare great episode 👍🏻
Well, another great story, well told, AND with the addition of a musical interlude! Very nice little styrofoam ships too!
Another great video, Kevin! Your presentation is wonderful and your models are fantastic! :)
Fantastic stuff, nobody does history like you at the moment. You remind me of Tony Robinson back in the day! I swear you were on Blake's 7 😁
@@thehistorysquad this is fantastic. Brilliant stuff, bringing history alive.
Fantastic stories. Great history and really well told. Although I was thinking more It Ain’t Half Hot Mum than Blake’s 7
You have a great talent as a presenter,it is great to see history made interesting like this.Well done.
The House of La Cerda is still around today. Over 800 years it has married into several very posh Spanish noble families. They reach back to King Alfonso X .
Love the outfit and props. Really brings it alive.
Loving these! Absolutely great
Definitely gonna need a trumpet like yours to announce my homecoming from the bar at 04:00 am to my neighbors
Fantastic! Thank you very much.
I love these - delicious historical dumplings.
These history docs are terrific. Thank you!
Love these videos, my favorite period, great models, fun presentation.
I love the passion and props you use, really brings another dimension to story. I look forward to the next installment!
Fantastic. Thank you
Im loving the models!
I find it more informative and easy to follow than (probably far more expensive) re enactments TV shows use!
You're amazing! I can't get enough watching your show
Love these videos! Medieval history has always been a glossed over time period for me that was not taught with much depth to me but these videos shed more light on the subject so I appreciate the effort you put into these videos. Thanks again!
Absolutely amazing stuff
Fantastic video! I love naval history, but had not heard of this battle before. Edward III seemed to have a keen eye for enemy weakness. His enemies only had to slip up once to lose the battle.
Thanks for your research and interest in history. Your videos help explain history and definitely spark interest.
Smashing! you certainly have a flair for bringing history to life, thanks for another interesting video.
Awesome as always 👏, God bless, always waiting for more incredible stories.
great job again cant wait till next one
The best history story teller!!!
So much love all the history and your models help you see how it all happened ! You’re an amazing storyteller!!
Thank you Kevin, always look forward to your tales of old, all our love, Anthony and the girls England UK
Well done! Can’t wait for the next episode!
Great! We've just released episode 12 today, so I hope you have fun catching up 👍🏻
Marvelous!!!❤
God bless you, sir. You're a gift to the world with your passion and artistry for presenting history. Cheers to you and your team. An inspiring demonstration. I'll be breaking out my miniatures this week.
Haha, wow, thanks Daniel, so glad you enjoy the films 👍🏻
I couldn't agree more. As a student of history, when I found this channel, I've been nothing but enthralled ever since. This is better than any History/Discovery history TV segment!!
