Egyptian woman here, and yeah, this is totally true. Egypt is a country that has ruined tourism through continuous corruption and lack of regulation. Obviously with the sheer amount of poverty begging is rife .Its heartbreaking for a country with so much to see. The treatment in airports and customer service compared to travelling to the uk or greece for example is drastic, and security is everywhere. Honestly, save yourselves the trouble y'all. I mean i grew up in europe so i only ever spent summer vacations in egypt, but there were always amazing cultural experiences, which weren't really ruined as much as the experiences of tourists bc of language barriers or lack of understanding of scam culture. There are so many sights to see other than the great pyramids. Down south in luxor there are leviathan temples and tombs . There are markets that spread twenty streets across. The Mediterranean coast has gorgeous teal waters and pearl white sand and the red sea has sand as bright as gold. Street food is heavenly, the people who aren't poor and desperate for money / hustlers are typically very sweet and there's so much to see in terms of music and dance. But like i said, it's still a country under autocracy and its been beaten up pretty damn hard. It definitely doesn't compare to the travel experience of going to paris. You gotta decide whether or not you're up for sum indiana jones stuff, lol

That's truly terrible! And extremely infuriating!
I live in a place that even if you walked alone in a short skirt, drunk trough town or anywhere at 2.a.m or at any time, you would still make it home safely, Without being harrassed or worse.. no need to have a male to escort you around..
It's easy to take it for granted, so when you go abroad, it's always a huge culture shock to suddenly feel extremely exposed all the time, even when you aren't..
Crime rate is low, things like a stranger attacking you is so rare. If it happens, it's mostly tourists & happening at a cruise ship passing our waters so the statistic falls onto us. So it's even safer here than what statistics shows..
Here, you can leave your baby sleeping in the pram outside alone, when you go into a store.. same with your dogs & no one will bother them.. so it's always a huge project to prepare for something else.
Bcs it's things like I never would think about, like i would never think about the risk of someone stealing your dog if you leave it outside. Bcs that just don't happen here..
I know I'm an extremely naive traveller because of the society I grew up in.. so different..
So if you can go with a group with a designated guide, it's the best option, or i would fall for all the scams. 😅

I went to Egypt back in 2022. The one thing that struck me was the fact that EVERY stranger who talks to you wants money from you. At the train station you were literally harrassed by 2-3 people demanding you take their taxi (and then being told you're crazy for wanting to walk 2km).
In Luxor we took a taxi and they dropped us off at a souvenir shop even though we explicitly said that we don't want to buy anything, and he was like "we need to wait for a convoy" even though that was utter BS. When we actually didn't buy anything both the taxi driver and the shopkeeper shot us an angry look, like wtf I'm not forced to buy fucking souvenirs...
I've travelled to 30+ countries on 5 continents, and Egypt easily tops #1 as the rudest locals. I'm sorry but that's my honest answer.

    • @veritasvanburen_
      @veritasvanburen_ Před 7 měsíci +736

You probably already know this but for anyone reading this who doesn’t: all of the locals work together to scam as much out of you as possible. The taxi driver would have known the souvenir shop owner and they’d have an agreement that if the driver misdirects you to the shop, and you buy something, they share the profit. Sadly, even some tour guides, security staff at airports and restauranteurs are in cahoot with local scammers. If you’re approached by a man in Egypt, just assume he’s not only trying to rinse you of everything you have, but also enable his street market/taxi driving/camel taming friends to do the same.

A colleague gave me a piece of advise so prior to my travel date, I bought a few copies of National Enquirer magazines and used that instead of money to pay the porters when we took the Nile River Cruise - these porters were demanding money from me, even though their tips were included in the fee. I ended up giving them those magazines to them. From the look on their faces, they were very happy with what they are seeing in those magazines, so they left me alone. Since then, I told my family and friends to NEVER visit Egypt. Seeing this video today (20yrs later) just reminded me of those days and from what I am seeing, sadly, nothings changed. In my experience, women who claim how safe they feel or are even condescending to you for being concerned tend to have narcissistic traits (and they like being watched lustfully by men), tend to underestimate danger tremendously OR traveled with local friends the entire time. I used to have this one particular friend, who was VERY narcissistic, and she would put me down for saying I don't want to travel solo as a woman. Never mind she told me she almost got raped at least twice while hitchhiking, she presented it like an adventure and was laughing about it. And she even forgot about one instance a year or two later (did she make it up or was she truly so unphased?). I had a chance to travel with her and she got us to a very dangerous place in 3 am, where we were surrounded by prostitutes, pimps, Johns and drug dealers. She walks in life like she is invincible, jokingly replying to sketchy-looking people... Sleeps with whoever... She truly lives in her own universe. I mean she lives an interesting life and I am jealous sometimes, but the risk ain't worth it to me. I can't not see dangers when they stare right at me.

A lady in the market just grabbed my hand, sprayed henna on it and started yelling that I owed her money. A guy offered to show us the place where people prepare the skins that they use for leather, then asked for money and began threatening us when he realized we didn't have any. We visited a tapestry workshop where a lady showed us how to add a piece of thread and then... you guessed it, asked for money. At some point we didn't even want to talk to people anymore cause the smallest interaction (even asking for directions, I'm not joking) ended up like "you're a tourist, you're richer than me, so don't be a dick and give me money". That added to the catcalling and animal abuse (monkeys, snakes, camels, horses, cats, rabbits etc, you name it, they're all exploited and/or in terrible shape) was exhausting and I was actually relieved to leave. I think this is so sad, what a beautiful country 😢 I've visited Egypt like 6 times from when I was 6 to 15 years old (because my parents loved the old culture, the sights and go snorkeling there). The last time when I was 15 years old, I experienced the "hunt". I was not a women already, more a kid. But my figure started to look like a women and that was enough for the egypt men. I dressed for european standards quite modest. Pants below the knee, no shoulders showing and high raised t-shirt. I was badly sexualy harrased at a quat tour. I had to sit behind a man who was driving the quat and he forced me to put my hands on his hips and he drove off-road... Then he put my hands somewhere else, I skip the bad details. I was so in shock and didn't know what was happening, I felt dirty.
I would love to come back someday because of many amazing childhood memories. But hearing how it even got worse and all kinds of women (no matter how modest they dress) feel unsafe makes me sick to my stomach 😢

Another guy then started waving something in my face, some kind of fumes or chemical which instantly made me lightheaded and tunneled my vision to the point I was almost passing out. I could feel myself going. I pushed him away and grabbed bags back. Unlocked the door and ran for my life. I don't know what their intentions were but kidnapping seems the most tolerable explanation. Don't want to think about their intentions tbh just glad to be alive. In short, always have your wits about you. I was naive and stupid to follow him for like £30 worth of food. If someone talks to you for 10 seconds about a pyramid fact they demand money and keep following you showing how pissed they are when you don't give them smth.

Visiting Egypt 15 years ago remains one of the worst experiences of my life. I felt like I had ptsd when I got back. Even tho I wore extremely conservative clothes, and covered my hair, and was traveling with my parents, I got almost constantly followed, harassed, groped. Every single tourist attraction was filled with scammers and perverts. Even the tour guide that we had hired tried to break into my room in the middle of the night, and repeatedly tried to convince me to be his 2nd wife. I would never recommend any young woman travels there. And I repeat, I WAS WITH MY PARENTS! It was truly an awful experience.

100% accurate!!! I was taken away from my tour group at the pyramids after I got onto a camel to have my picture taken in front of them. Camels are very tall when standing. The guy took me so far away from my group, that I couldn’t see them anymore. He demanded all of my money. I ended up giving him around $100 and jumped off the camel and ran. Told the police onsite and they asked me to identify him. I later found out this is common and the police are usually in on it.

Ugh! Like Mexico or the DR.
The only island I've been to & multiple times as it was our favorite, is St. Lucia in the West Indies. This annoying & unsafe crap didn't happen there & their crime rate for tourists is very low. I was told by one of the people who live there that all the citizens pool money to pay for the drugs or alcohol for the people in their villages that have a problem w/substances.
Their tourism trade is the main industry there. So to prevent the people w/substance problems from robbing the tourists & putting that in jeopardy like Egypt here their village gives pays for their habit(s).
It seems to be working that's for sure. We never felt unsafe there even walking around at night that's why we'd go once or twice a year thru my sons childhood & teen years. If I got to a place & it was like what most people are describing here, I'd leave early honestly.

As an American who lived in Egypt for just shy of year a few years back. She’s 100% accurate. Every few feet someone’s begging. It never ends. Luckily as a 5’8 woman, I didn’t feel as vulnerable as my 4’11 friend. She was almost to the point of an anxiety attack. Imagine everyone screaming at you for money and they tower over you? It was a LOT. Parents will literally sick their children on you to beg, I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve been swarmed by children. There were honestly many moments where I almost lost my patience. Because even if you give in, there is a swarm of different children 20 feet after them begging and following you. I hated that aspect of living there. It’s sad.

As I was smiling and thanking him and extending my hand, he put the hat above his head and extended the other hand with a gesture to make me understand he wanted money in exchange for my hat. The whole trip was like that. We are not human beings to them, especially western women. We made the mistake, my mother and I, to go to a market on our own, and it was almost frightening. Despite the fact that they understood us, and that we were telling them that we wanted to look at their merchandise peacefully, they were harassing us. We almost had to run out of there and were relieved to see my father at the end of the street.
