    I am a beginner photographer and I was looking for a lens to capture photos during my hikes and do some astrophotography. I can only get one lens for now and I was confused between getting a prime lens or use kit lens that comes with XT3: xf 18-55mm f/2.8-4R? What do you recommend based upon your experience?

    Hello Matthew , well said . I think that both type of lenses are very important. It is matter of practicality. Sometimes we do need the zoom lens for better framing and accessibility, sometimes we need the prime lens for the low F-stop and DOF.

      Hello Libor! I know it's such a hard decision to make, but as we all know we can't have every lens under the sun to capture those images! :D Sucks right? hahaha

    Love both, l have a 25mm 1.7 Panasonic cheap prime, very happy with the photos, mainly of orchid flowers, also a Panasonic 14-140 for walkaround on holidays, oh and a few others as a backup. All MFT gear, total weight ready for travel without tripod 1.8 kg. I do take a samsung S2 as review and backup.

    I do landscape, architecture and portrait photography with X-H1 and my go-to lenses are the 16-55 2.8 WR and Viltrox 85 mm 1.8. When I do street shooting on my X-T30, I use the first gen 27 mm 2.8 plus two vintage screw-mount Takumars: The 35 mm 3.5 and the 50 mm 1.4. The focus peaking on Fujis is excellent!

    Primes! They force me to move around and help me be more critical when composing an image. I tend to be lazier with zooms, I’ll just zoom in enough to remove something I don’t like rather than trying to recompose the image until I’m happy with everything. That’s just me though. Great video đŸ‘ŒđŸœ

      This is so true, I really feel like primes make photographers brain tick over. A zoom you can literally get a different composition from standing somewhere. But as I said it what suits your needs, and why I love there are two types of photographers in the same niche out there, makes it so unqiue!

    Thank you for this video, I think you do good instructive videos, doesn't matter if you say some mistakes the thing is the summary..... your thoughts. Well done.
    In my case I like the quality so, if I go to get good landscapes I take primes, because the sharpness specially of I crop the image but if I go to any place for a trip I use zoom so I can do landscapes or any other type of picture without prepare the shot. I am agree it is just to decide...versatility or quality although 18-55 has a good quality also.

    I always thought prime lens have less glass ( less elements) therefore less resistance to the light going through the the lens so they capture more detail zooms have to have more glass(more elements) so greater resistance to the light. Light been similar to electricity in it behaviour?

    Fuji prime lenses are better than Fuji zoom lenses except when the reverse is true.
    I shoot with primes and zooms. I personally prefer primes to zooms.
    Here are the three Fuji prime lenses I use most often:
    Fuji 23mm f/1.4
    Fuji 56mm f/1.2
    Fuji 16mm f/1.4
    I also use the Fuji 16-55mm f/2.8 WR zoom as a backup to my three primes.
    When I need a shorter focal length, I use a 12mm f/2.8 Zeiss or the 12mm f/2 Rokinon.
    When I need a longer focal length, I use an adapted 135mm f/2 Zeiss or the 50-140mm f/2.8 Fuji WR zoom.
    I use the Fuji fast primes when I am shooting under low-light conditions.
    I use fast Fuji primes when I need shallow depth-of-field.
    I use fast Fuji primes when I need to isolate a foreground subject from the background.
    I use the Fuji zooms when I cannot change primes lenses fast enough.
    I use Fuji zooms when I have no idea where or what I will be shooting.
    I use Fuji primes when know where and what I will be shooting.
    I use Fuji zooms when shooting video.
    I use a Fuji prime when I need a fast small lens. For example, on vacation, I like to travel with one small lens (23mm f/2) on one body.
    I use a Fuji zoom when I need specific focal lengths and I do not have those focal length in primes. For example, when shooting a certain venue, I know that I will be limited to shooting from a certain location and 18mm, 35mm, and 90mm focal lengths are what I need. However, since I do not have those primes, I use my zoom lenses instead.

    50-140 2.8 is my goto lens. On my XH1 95% of the time for sports/action/family, portraits (at 90mm+ for the compression), landscape (isolate subject/areas), events, wildlife (zoo... and add the 2x TC for birds, etc), even street when I'm on holiday. I haven't found this lens wanting yet.
    I tried primes and, although the sharpness and low light options are better, they don't suit my style or needs - changing too often and missing shots.

    I had all the Zeiss Batis lenses for the A7III when I was a Sony shooter. The IQ was top notch, but the bag was so heavy and the constant changing of lenses was so cumbersome that I sold the lot and got an X-Pro3 with the 16-80mm. Now I take a lot more pictures. Primes are both heavier and more expensive than zooms when you buy all the fast primes that a zoom lens covers. They actually are not a lot sharper in my opinion.

    I found some Fuji primes great such as the 10-24 and also the 55-140mm they are both great and also have Image stabilisation, however they really stuffed up with the 16-55mm F2.8 its very soft the AF is hit and miss, and basically just can’t use it on professional gigs. I wish they could make a sharper lens but with less zoom, that would still work well, maybe 16-35mm F2.8 but super sharp. I don’t care if it’s heavy. Just want quality.

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  Pƙed 5 lety +2

      Ohh really you dont like the 16-55mm?? Youre the first person I have heard this from? What type of photography do you shoot mainly?? I understand what you mean with the shorter zoom range but wouldn't sell because it needs to suit the overall market. Because that would be a great vlog/travel lens! I am keen for the 16-80mm f/4 but would imagine that is much softer than the 16-55mm f/2.8.

      Matthew Storer my main work is weddings and portraits I also do some advertising stuff for a few clients, but my main reason for getting the Fuji system and the 16-55mm F2.8 was for my wedding and events work run and gun stuff, coming from full frame the 16-55mm really doesn’t come close to 24-70mm Canon version . at 100% crop my full frame Canon is super sharp and even at 200% it still renders well, but can’t say the same about the 16-55mm it’s just way to soft even at 100% they only way for me to match full frame is to carry and use the 3 primes 16mm f1.4, the 23mm F2 and the 35 mm F2 which are great and are sharp and do the job, and which I have tried using as a replacement for my full frame 24-70mm but it’s just not possible trying to constantly change lenses in a Fast pace environment such as weddings and events, and why should I put myself under all that stress when I can get the same quality with a full frame zoom,.

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  Pƙed 5 lety

    I'd like to add a couple more thoughts to this discussion. As primes are designed for only 1 focal length there is less distortion than the equivalent length in a zoom. Had you been shooting an urban scene rather than a waterfall a comparison of vertical lines at the edges might have been interesting! Primes make you think more about your composition as you can't just twist the zoom ring then press the shutter release. By extension, changing the focal length changes the perspective so when there are foreground elements in the image this can make a huge difference to the final appearance of the photo as the balance/relationship between the different elements in the photo changes. I think primes make for more thoughtful photography. This is a slower process than just using the zoom so along with low light and sharpness v convenience and speed this should also be considered. I use both, exactly half my lens collection are primes and they are my first choice when I know I will have time to think about each shot or if I suspect the light will be low. Run and gun, the zooms every time!

    Matt, Matt this was awesome. This is the exact dilemma that goes on in my head (and my hip pocket), for years. I'm a zoom man primarily because of the crappy places I shoot in Asia (incredible dust). I hate to change lenses - ever. My primary and main lens is my 16-55 (tried the crappy, horrible 18-55 and it was terrible), this is a brilliant lens, and though I hate to disagree with you, it is equally and every way as sharp as my 23 f2 and 90mm f2. I lose nothing with image quality at all using the 16-55. Though it is heavy, it is so versatile - just like you said. I miss so many shots with primes because you have to grab the other camera, and you lose the moment - with the zoom, whammo and the shot's in the bag. However, here is where the kicker comes in (as you said), I long to have that 1.4 on the 16mm. But what do I do, drag along a third body hanging around my neck (have tried it and it's a pain), or change out in the dust and get crap in my camera. I haven't resolved this yet Matt and may never. All I know is that a top quality zoom like the 16-55 is absolutely brilliant and is great most of the time - just so versatile as you say. However, there are the times that only a zoom can give you that separation of subject from background - that 1.4 look. Oh boy, I wish there was one solution that you could solve all of these problems. However, I guess that's what keeps me hungry and searching for that perfect combo. Keep up the great videos Matt! Philip

    Interesting question. Many years ago I was a UK newspaper photographer in Fleet Street during the 1970/80’s and used film cameras exclusively. In the past prime lenses were far far superior to zooms...but today with optical correction etc the differences are tiny. Now that I am retired I shoot digital with Fuji, but exclusively stills only and not video, and my camera lens combination depends on circumstances. My walk about camera is a X100s with the fixed 23mm because of its size and portability. Being old school I’m comfortable with primes and have the f2 versions of the 18/23/35/50 because of their size and quality and these are paired with my X-Pro 1. But I do a lot of travel brochure photography and when travelling zooms have clear advantage, these include the 10-24, 18-55, and 55-200mm, with my XT-1 - because I am a still photographer exclusively I don’t need the newest generation of camera bodies and I invest my money in lenses. If I was a video shooter I would purchase an XH1 or XT2/3.

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  Pƙed 5 lety

      Great story love hearing the generation jump. I totally understand not upgrading from the X-T1 to the newer models. Only reason I did was due to the Video capabilities. What do you prefer if you had to choose, primes or zooms? What makes you enjoy photography more?

    • @davidmilton2956
      @davidmilton2956 Pƙed 5 lety +1

      Matthew Storer : that is very tough to answer - my old film cameras that I still use are a Leica IIIf, Rolleiflex 3.5F - and I’m trained/comfortable with primes. While Fuji produces some very fast primes such as the 16mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.2 they are very expensive (I’m a pensioner!), if I was still working I’d appreciate the low light capability and the shallow DOF - however the f2’s are small, optically very good, and the modern focus motor mean they are fast and silent. These are my “Fujicrons” and are less expensive than my Summicrons!. However, for versatility I recently did a three week trip to Japan and took the XT1 with battery grip and the 18-55 and the 10-24 only - to keep the wife happy when going out to dinner I also took the 27mm pancake lens, removed the battery pack, so the camera would fit in a pocket. If I have time to think and plan I like to use fast primes - but in your video you correctly noted that zooms give you so much more versatility, they also have in-lens image stabilisation so they don’t need to be so fast. For me zooms are like a Swiss Army knife and can do many things but primes still have a slight edge assuming you don’t have to stand in freezing water to get the shot!

    • @matthewstorerphotography
      @matthewstorerphotography  Pƙed 5 lety

      Great comparison I might steal that one that zooms are like Swiss Army knifes, not good at one thing, just good at everything. But a Zoom is a main hunting knife haha. I think that is super! :D
      So interesting how you jump around so much from primes to zooms but I think the years and years of experience has allowed you to understand the knowledge of the camera and lenses to adapt very quickly in all types of situations. BTW Japan must have been freaking sweet!

    • @davidmilton2956
      @davidmilton2956 Pƙed 5 lety

      Matthew Storer : I encouraged my children/niece, who are interested in photography, to buy a cheap prime lens first when they wanted to learn properly. Most modern DSLR’s come with an inexpensive kit zoom, without experience the amature photographer tends to ‘see the shot’ and use the zoom to compose by zooming in and out. A prime forces you to use your feet, to move forward and back, left and right, high and low and you’ll discover a much better composition as a result. So primes make you a better photographer - but it is nice to have a zoom when you need one. Before retiring I worked for a Japanese Company for 10 years so my wife and I decided to visit on vacation - Kyoto is a photographers dream...while there I took vacation shots and one of them appeared in the Sunday Times Travel Magazine last month...it was with the 10-24mm zoom as there was a lake in front ...Ironic or Hypocrite?

    👉Nice pics and general info, but have to disagree on a few points, Matt. (Should I take advice from someone with frozen feet?😁.) Not the case that primes always have more glass (elements) than zooms. In particular, the Fuji 16mm 1.4 has, per Fuji specs, 13 elements whereas the Fuji 10-24ml zoom has 14 elements. Also disagree that zooms are inherently easier to use - primes lack zoom rings and most primes lack focal distance limit switches found on some zooms. Zoom ergonomics would be a negative for ease of use. Other factors include need for IS. Still, I use a mix of zooms and primes for various shoot conditions, as you pointed out, and find primes yield better IQ. Complex factors drive individual needs and preferences. A tad more patience and edits should have relegated the closing vid segment to blooper status; likewise for poor audio at waterfalls - I know you can do better, Matt. Cheers.

      Thanks for the information Paul really appreciate it and sorry that I got so much information wrong. It wasn't a direct comparison between the fuji 16mm and xf 10-24 that why I said many times usually, generally or in some cases. Because if we compare it to the XC16-55 its completely different, never mind other camera companies. Also the easier to use part is your personal opinion, everyone's will be different which is why I said "usually easier depending on your shooting style."
      Also please remember next time when making these comments that we youtubers are human, we do make mistakes. You've had time to think, research and write down these points where I was going off my head talking about this. Poor preparation maybe on my behalf, but one again it was a general overview of prime vs zooms.
      Also remember we have feeling us CZcamsrs and when we read negative comments like this. It effect us personally and on our work questioning why we provide this FREE, I must say this again FREE content for you to watch.
      Sorry mate, don't like it don't watch it, you wouldn't watch something on TV if you hated it, you'd change the channel. I am trying my best with the time and knowledge that I have working 10 hours on this video for about $3.... Just remember this next time you wish to comment something negative on a video. Better yet, get out there and shoot a video so I can watch your content to learn :D

    Unless you are pixel peeping, the Fujifilm zooms as good as primes, with the advantage of IS and less need for cropping and changing lenses. My favourites are the 10-24 and 55-200. My wife says I have too many lenses, she is clearly wrong!

      HAHAHA. Is there a such thing as to many lenses? Well yeah to be honest it is unless you're pixel peeping or printing also. But I agree if it is just online content that you deliver it wouldn't ever matter due to the compression anyways!
