    Great review. Some additional notes about the Rhino sets:
    "Dark Awakening" used the ending with the narrator previewing "The Return of Optimus Prime", which was added only to the rerun. It replaced Rominus' "Farewell,...Prime" line. (Shout's release uses the original ending.)
    Apparently, the closing credits were typed up from scratch and placed over the closing animation sequences. This results in some anachronisms that have no basis in history, such as Season 2's credits being listed in Season 1 episodes. Arlene Banas (Carly) joined the cast in Season 2, but, according to the DVD sets, she's credited in Season 1.
    Shout's sets actually duplicate the closing credits errors from the Rhino sets!

    My main beef with those Rhino DVDs of Transformers and G.I. Joe were the "sweetened" sound effects for playing them on a 5.1 surround set and to make them sound more "modern."

    • @DennisTamayo
      @DennisTamayo Před 2 lety +1

      The first 3 volumes of the original Animaniacs DVDs had the audio being remixed in 5.1, but fans wanted it in stereo so Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released the 4th & final volume in 2013.

    Wow Sean, you really put some research into the sets. Though I'm not entirely old enough to even have watched the series, I have watched a few from my dad's collection and it wasn't exactly Rhino. Can't remember at the moment, but didn't have this crap along with it. I mean really, what does it take to make a proper simple transfer. I know I'm a bit young for this, but I still understand the techniques and fan outrage that was bestowed upon them. Also, I'm inclined to think companies LOVE MONEY

    I have the Rhino sets myself still and I paid $50 for each set when they were first released. So disappointed. The Rhino DVD release of the Movie was also terrible as the last half hour of it is poor quality. I also have the 20th Anniversary DVD release of the movie and the Matrix of Leadership box set. The main reason I have not sold off my Rhino sets is because of the ending in Dark Awakening in Season 3. I like the "So Long...Prime" better.

      Double check your box set. You'll notice that Dinobot Island is on the first disc of Season 2. If going by continuity order, this should be episode 31. Here's some info on the subject on the TF Wiki . tfwiki.net/wiki/Shout!_Factory

      I wasn't trying to argue, just pointing out the differences between the two sets. Still its nice having both when you're as hardcore of a fan as we are. Sometimes no matter what we the fans say they don't hear us. I've been meaning to reread the Marvel Comics run although I'm more of a cartoon fan. Check out my "Who Became Cyclonus?" video on my channel when you get a chance. I'm making more discussions like that coming soon.

    There is no doubt in my mind at all that Shout! Factory definitely did right by the series, as they finally gave us an actual good release that cleaned up most if not all of Rhino's mistakes from using those incomplete 35mm prints. I have seen those many comparison videos between the versions as aired on television as well as released on VHS in the '80s/'90s and the Rhino DVD's, so it was pretty clear to me that those sets were badly botched in about every way imaginable in terms of not only the video but the audio as well with the horrible 5.1 surround mix and all of those added sfx that were not supposed to be there in the first place. I am really glad that i didn't waste my money on them to instead just wait a while for something so much better.
    And i say SMH to those who would say they prefer the presentation on the Rhino sets, because obviously they are not in the know and don't realize that what they see is not how it is really meant to be.

    As far as sound goes, yeah, a lot of the effects are wrong, but mine has a thunderous BOOM added to the gun fire, not crackling. I guess I was so happy to be able to watch Transformers again that I was happy with what I got, even if it wasn't 100% right.

    Several years ago I wanted to watch the original Transformers animated tv show. This was slightly before Shout! Factory announced they were coming out with their set. I almost bought the Rhino sets or at least tried to, at the time they were out of print and expensive. But I heard about the problems and decided against it and the Shout Factory! announced their release and I have had that set since it came out. I also plan on getting Beast Wars and the Japanese set they recently released.

    Hey, Zaranyzerak.
    I’m about to give away my 2002 Complete Season One DVD Set of The Original Transformers by Kid Rhino Home Video soon, or maybe Now. And, I’m definitely getting the SHOUT! Factory version re-release of Season 1 of The Original G1 Series on DVD.
    I don’t mention about the other seasons (Seasons 2-4) that Rhino Home Entertainment originally released on Region 1 DVD.
    I mean, The Remastered Picture Quality and Video Presentation looks phenomenally good and it’s crisper and sharper.
    But, I Definitely, Extremely and Really Hate how Kid Rhino added new sound effects for the Remixed 5.1 Surround Soundtrack. In which, I definitely agree with you with the sizzles. It’s such a Travesty. It’s incredibly frustrating and annoying! I much rather prefer watching it in 2.0 Stereo and Original Broadcast Audio.
    Also, Nice Video and RANT! Thumbs up, Buddy! Keep up the Good Work.

JEM (cartoon in the 80's) is releasing in USA on Oct., I believe that is going to be the complete series from all I read. Shout Factory is releasing the series. I think Shout Factory did a awesome job. Just like, I remember them from the air time on WGN channel in the 80's. Which made me happy :) I'm like a held off on RHINO releases.

    Great discussion on these sets. I have a really weird perspective on the Rhino DVDs. You see I am totally blind and so for me, sound is really important. I'm also a huge Transformers G1 fan. When I was growing up I only heard a few episodes and when I was an adult in university, the Rhino sets came out. I knew straight away they'd added sounds, but I didn't care so much as sometimes those sounds told me a bit more about what was happening on screen than the 80s SFX where the design could be a little sparse. So I guess I learned to love the Rhino sound because, being a sound designer myself at the time, I realised what Magno had tried to do. I totally agree the original audio should have been there BTW. Also, animation mistakes, meh, meant nothing to me as I couldn't see them of course :) however what's interesting years later, is that I picked up the Shout Factory DVD sets and I now love the original audio. So I keep both copies around depending upon what I want to hear. What i'd love is the Shout video for both the movie an series, but Rhino audio and shout audio as options. Then I think that would be the difinitive set.

    Shout Factory has done a good job releasing the old 80s and 90s cartoons, one thing I wish they would've done with the Transformers Set is that it's suppose to be clebrating Transformers 25th Anniversary, you'd think they would put in more featurettes or a full length documentary about the history of the Transformers Franchise

    I have the Metrodome sets, I have noticed that in some shots various Transformers are the wrong color, but other than that I have not really had allot of problems with the sets. I do not agree that one is not a proper fan if one do not upgrade, for some a few added sound effects is not enough to use quite allot of money on a new DVD set, I might to have everything in one box, but still, not everyone is as hung up on minute details as that, I honestly did not notice anything wrong with the sound.

There were no added sounds and Victor Caroli's commercial break narration was there. Did Rhino correct the 2.0 Audio and reissue? All my sets were preordered, so I would think I received the initial prints.

    At least we got the Shout Factory releases for Transformers. I mean, not all of the cartoons from the '80s have gotten that royal treatment. The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin is a great example. The broadcast masters were used on all home video releases from the 12 volume VHS release that Hi-Tops Video put out in the late '80s, right through to the complete series DVD release that Image Entertainment put out in 2012. And aside from the deluxe packaging for the 2012 series set, the show has never had any bonus features on it. That includes the 2008 Mill Creek DVD sets, and the original DVD releases put out by First National Pictures in 2006.

The animation and coloring mistakes I notice.

      +JordanTheVHSDVD&NostalgiaTVGuy2002 I personally recommend the Shout! Factory sets, they are so much better than the Rhino DVDs and do not have all the work print errors and horrible added sound effects in them. They actually took the time to go in and insert the corrected scenes where needed to fix the most grevous errors that are unique to those film masters for the episodes, and in my opinion that is what the latter should have done rather than simply doing the bare minimum and letting most of those errors go uncorrected like they did.
      Unquestionably, Shout's release is the best and a clear improvement over the highly flawed Rhino releases.

    • @JordansCornerofNostalgia
      @JordansCornerofNostalgia Před 6 lety

      I know. If Rhino want to Remaster the Original Transformers, then Use the Original 1" Broadcast Masters instead of the Original Incomplete 35mm Film Negatives!

    • @justinmiddleton8818
      @justinmiddleton8818 Před 6 lety

      +JordanTheVHSDVD&NostalgiaTVGuy2002 The thing is that there is no complete or correct set of all the episodes on 35mm as far as Season 1 goes, so Shout! had to take those and insert the corrected scenes from the broadcast masters in order to get as close to the episodes as they were originally aired as possible. They wanted to make use of the same set of film prints that Rhino had used previously as much as they could for maximum quality, but also go the extra mile to not just straight up copy and paste the transfers from the previous DVD releases as many other companies had done and fix most but not all of the pre broadcast animation mistakes which had plagued the Rhino sets especially with Season 1. Not to mention also getting rid of that horrible 5.1 audio remix with the added sound effects and sticking with a track that only contained the original elements from the proper mono audio source.
      Also, if i read correctly the broadcast tapes were not exactly in the most pristine condition after 25 years even as preserved as they were at the time that Shout! utilized them, so basically combining those with the film prints were the best way to get the most complete versions we have seen. You get for the most part the crisp quality of the former but without most of the glaring errors.

  • @EonievesTboneCovers
    @EonievesTboneCovers Před rokem

    I don’t see what’s all the fuzz with the rhino set and hating on it. They worked with what they had at the time. It’s easy to bash others when your not involved. They were the only ones who decided to redo the Transformers G1 series and cared at the time. Many re-lived the experience with that version like me. I like them and it was great to watch it again in great quality at the time and in 5.1. Mono sucks. I also have the shout factory version and I wish they had provided the 5.1 as an option. Look great also. Not a big enough deal for hating on Rhinos product. I grew up watching Transformers from the start and The Movie was great. Just bought it in 4K. No need to get angry or aggressive over a rerun product. It’s not like you had anything to do with writing or creating the transformers. If you take personal and aggressive over stuff like that then you might need some serious therapy. My opinion.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  Před rokem +2

      Who's being "angry and aggressive and needing therapy?" This is a review of the quality of a product. The quality was vastly inferior to the Shout Factory set. Riddled with animation errors, and the 5.1 mix was awful. Not even remotely nostalgic as it shoehorned in countless sounds that weren't even in the original mix to begin with. I don't care if "mono sucks," that's how the show was produced and broadcast originally and to NOT include an unaltered mono track as an option was a slap in the face to fans who had been TRYING to tell Rhino what they, as fans, as the primary people buying those sets, wanted. Those fans were ignored. I call it like I see it.
      Am I supposed to just gloss over those glaring problems and shrug my shoulders? I wouldn't be doing my job as a reviewer if I was dishonest like that. And FYI, I actually DID contribute to the Shout Factory set. All of the toy commercials on the last disc of extras were provided by me, captured from my own original off air recordings. My name is in the booklet for the Matrix of Leadership set. I was in constant contact with Brian Ward, the producer of the set, providing information and advice for that and several other sets such as G.I. Joe and Jem because I'm considered an authoritative fan source for all of those shows. I'm not some random moron who doesn't know what he's talking about. Why is it, in your apparent opinion, BAD for fans to want the very best presentation for their favorite old shows? I'd say if a product is sub-standard, then it's absolutely the duty of fans to speak up about it.

    @David315842 Without the extra sound effects, I'll be sure to look into it as soon as possible. But yeah, I pretty much collected what became avaliable in the UK. Including the 'Takara Collection' sets which had the Japanese exclusive series on them. It's a pity Metrodome were naughty and only included the Zone OVA on the last disc of the Victory set, but only on the Takara Complete Collection set and not on the Victory set seperatily. Needless to say I was dis-pleased with Metrodome.

    That and I wish they were able to clean up the masters they used to fix Rhino's mistakes, not in terms of Audio but in terms of the color quality. As for Shout Factory's release of the Headmasters I wish they would've gotten the surviving cast of G1 and recorded an English Dubbed Track for it, finally giving us a complete G1 Season 4

    @David315842 Oh a nother thing about the Sony Wonder/Maverick set is that some of the episode openings are a bit odd. For instance in More Then Meets The Eye: Part 1, it features the Season 2 opening, but to the Season 1 intro music.....yeah, it must have been on the master tapes they had with with when they produced the DVD's.

    there wrong when presented as being Transformers on DVD. Since they arnt the show that people watched on TV. If they were released as Transformers the Workprint edition then they would be right.
    So yeah not wrong unless presented to be the orginal broadcast version which they arnt

    Here's an aside about the digital editing that Rhino had used to attempt to fix some of the work print errors for their DVDs that you were talking about. One of these so called "fixes" that is particularly infamous is the scene in The Ultimate Doom: Part 3, in which Mirage appears via his invisibility power inside the Decepticons' spaceship. This is because it turned out that the animation of him actually re appearing was not in the 35mm footage they were using as the masters for said DVDs. They attempted to correct this little gaffe by taking a low resolution single frame of Mirage from another source and very badly copy pasting it into the scene.
    Check out this awfulness- tfwiki.net/wiki/File:Tud3_mirage_rhino_fix.jpg
    Needless to say, it looked like absolute sloppily done garbage in just about every way. Shout! Factory on the other hand just opted to insert the original broadcast version of the scene which was so much better on their part, and that is what Rhino seriously should have done in the first place instead of just letting all those work print errors and additional pre broadcast mistakes go out as is.

    So is there any released version of G1 Transformers that are the proper original broadcast episodes? when they started releasing them on DVD I decided to wipe most, if not all of the episodes that I had on vhs before I realised what a mess they had made of the DVDs..I remember the series 1 & 2 episodes that were shown on Sky in the 80's didn't have any credits over the closing sequence which l loved..& most of the episodes also didn't have individual episode names until season 3..I wish I'd just kept all my old video recordings of the show now :(

    • @TF80s
      @TF80s Před 10 lety

      You'd think by now that Hasbro/Marvel or whoever owns the rights to the original g1 series would have put their hands in their pockets & fixed the mistakes in all the episodes and released them again on dvd mistake free..with no added sound effects :)

    • @TF80s
      @TF80s Před 10 lety

      I did watch ur videos and i wasn't impressed with some of what u said about the matrix set..so was there mistakes in the season 2,3 & 4 episodes in the rhino set too that weren't in the original broadcast episodes? I thought it was just the first season. In the Europe we got different episodes to what you got in the US so our original broadcast episodes were different to yours..our episodes for season 1 & for most of season 2 had no individual episode names or cast & crew names on the closing sequence..so to watch the episodes now with those things seems odd to me & just doesn't feel right...it's funny you say that it annoyed you that they fixed a spelling mistake on a particular episode because for us there was no name on that episode at all :)

    • @TF80s
      @TF80s Před 10 lety

      P.S with the technology they have today there's no reason why they couldn't fix all the mistakes that made it on air, especially the mistake ridden 5 faces & some of the other season three episodes..I know most fans hate g2 but for some of those early g2 episodes they fixed a few of the animation mistakes, which was fine by me..i'd love a g1 boxset released with no animation errors or added sound affects and a choice to watch the g2 episode as an alternate..the thing I most hated about g2 was the opening & closing sequence & the fact that they did them so randomly..other than that I didn't have much of a problem with them..I actually wish that they'd made g2 versions of all the g1 eps..I know I'm probably alone with that idea.

    • @TF80s
      @TF80s Před 10 lety

      I didn't mean I wasn't impressed with your review..I meant with the boxset.. ;) well personally I'd love all the animation mistakes in the g1 episodes to be fixed up..surely they could have the originally aired episodes as an alternate choice on the dvd too..

    • @TF80s
      @TF80s Před 10 lety

      well to say on the one hand that you want them as they originally aired but then on the other hand to say that you want them in better quality is a bit of a contradiction..I think they ruined a couple of episodes by improving the picture quality..there is two episodes that had a certain charm to them & almost looked like comic book style animation that now look far too colourful & cartoony, which in my opinion ruins the whole feel of those particular episodes..also like l said, the episodes that aired in Europe were different to the ones that aired in the US which means that what you call original broadcast episodes are completely different to what people on this side of the world would have watched.
