  • amzn.to/3zsD84y First of all, I paid $19 for these amazing strippers. You can jump from 22GA wire to 12-2 Romex instantly. The strip without scratching the wire. The cut wire like butter. Well, sometimes cold butter. And the have a couple of adjustments that are not all that necessary, but nice. Truly a joy to use!

    I love these, had them for 3 years now. I've used it for 10awg stranded THHN, just have to push down on the top slightly when doing so. The best situation i've used them for is while on a ladder doing lighting. There is no motion from your arm trying to strip a wire with standard strippers. Can knock them all out in a few seconds. I keep a pair at home and a pair at work.

    I work for a wiring company and all we use is navy style thick cables and I like this klein. Sometimes I put that klein catapult in a nice vice at a good angle sometimes even pulling the handle slide down a little depending on what I'm doing and can knockout so many it looks like confetti every where because it catapults that jacket so u don't have to touch it. I like going right to a perfect cut wire. Sometimes I really need the just cut a bunch of straight 8 cable and I always bend the cable till it's 90 degrees side ways and I measure connector depth and allow for expansion. Also everything jonard makes is so nice.

  • @TheSir2005
    @TheSir2005 Před 2 lety +7

    These type self-adjusting wire strippers are the most versatile out there but as with any versatile tool it has quite a few drawbacks. Doesnt do well on every kind of insulation cause jaws arent exactly sharp, the jaws pull the insulation apart instead of actually cutting it but as long as you use it on PVC or silicon it works fine. Works pretty well on data (cat) cables as well.
    I keep a pair of these style strippers in my bag just for stripping double insulated (small) round and flat cables. Like you say, there's not a faster stripper out there when it comes to that. The most fun part about these strippers is stripping cables with 2 conductors at one swoop. Stripping two wires in one motion just feels nice.

      Agreed, handy with limitations especially in confined spaces. I was trying to do some dash work with them and it wasn’t happening. I have the Irwin’s from about 5 years ago, they have to be made in the same factory to this Klein.

    • @TheSir2005
      @TheSir2005 Před 2 lety +3

      @@jris True in confined spaces these are just terrible. My number one task for them is stripping 2 conductor silicone cable we use for installing recessed lights in ceilings. Thats 99% of what i use them for.
      I dont think the Irwin version comes out of the same factory as Klein tho.
      There's a few who make them and Irwin and Stanley Fatmax for example are identical. They are made in Taiwan. I have the Stanley Fatmax version myself.
      Then you have a few others who are made in China, which far as i know is where the Klein version is made.

    Looking t how it operates... looks like it scores and pulls/rips the insulation apart vs. the older strippers that cut through the insulation. Older solid core still have to pinch the end with pliers to loosen, then strip.

    These things are useful in certain circumstances, but honestly, I can trim out an entire house faster & with less effort with a good screwdriver, a razor knife and those sweet Klein hybrids (I carry the hybrid pliers and the Milwaukee fastback based on *your* advice, Doc).
    All that said, I'll probably grab a pair of these before the next final inspection to give them a trial run installing devices - you make them look almost fun to use!

    I went and watched 6 more videos on Amazon. Not one single video explained how the wire strippers work. But it seems like the old style wire strippers cut the insulation and then you pull the insulation off with the wire strippers. This stripper seems like it just tears the insulation off. Like tearing paper. Not sure if it will be as rough as torn paper or not but the price is good to try them out.

  • @802Garage

    While I do love this style of stripper, I often prefer the other style you showed where you have to select the stipper hole size. Not all the time, but at least for delicate jobs like car sensor wiring where I don't want any degradation of the wire insulation. I'm sure the difference is minor, but I just don't like seeing chaffing on my wires. These are still awesome. Didn't realize they would work on Romex. That's pretty sweet.

    While the Klein tool works well on the wires shown in your review/video, I have to say that it's likely the worst choice of a name brand tool for stripping romex. It has a tendency to slip on that very thin/extra layer of clear plastic that is present on romex..... and simply doesn't work well/causes a lot of frustration. However, the Irwin/vise grip version of this type tool works great on romex, as well as the wire types/sizes you mentioned. Overall, I would have to go with the Irwin/vise grip 2078300 as the best overall automatic wire stripper. I suppose a case could be made that it all depends on the type wire you most strip....but why not have a tool that does all wire stripping well, versus only being good on certain wires. Price wise there's a $5 difference.

      came here to say the same thing, the Irwin looks cheaper and the length stop falls off the moment you put it in your tool bag but it seems to be a slightly better tuned stamping. I got the klein as an "upgrade" to a 10 year old Irwin and still use the old one because the klein misfires far too often.
      that's the other thing, while these are a neat design they aren't very reliable, try stripping wire to the right length for a ferrule first go. they're both pretty rough on the insulation too.

      @@jeremymcguire7069 Cool i'll pick up a pair. I've moved over to wago connectors for everything and have the klein pliers that strip the romex sheath, so those 3 tools are going to REALLY speed things up.

    Have had the Irwin one for almost a decade, curious is this is any better in quality and consistency. Looks like a clone tbh.

      Its the only one i have found to have a metal depth gauge, all others have plastic gauge which tend to break after a little time

      I’m thinking the same on the clone, the Irwin’s have held up well for me for this long. Think I’d switch to the knipex pistol strippers when/if they fail.

      I bought a radioshack version like 15yrs ago. They work pretty good. Unless you have a really short wire w not much length to strip. Other than that they work great. The depth guide is a chinchy piece of plastic but still hasnt broke. I dont use them a ton cause i forget about them or working ina small area i cant fit them

    My brother was getting married, and I was in charge of the strippers. I showed up with a pair for everyone at the party. However, I never got to use them as they beat me up and took the strippers home with them. I'd like to get one for my personal use; do they work well on PV cable?

    Are those designed by Klein or have just licensed and rebranded someone else’s design?

      Stanley Fatmax 96-230, Hogert HT1P182, YATO YT-2313 and many many more. A little bit different in shape are Jokari Super 4 Plus or Knipex 12 62 180, but in general they are all the same. It is a pity, that they hurt insulation by pulling it apart instead of gently cutting. Therefore I would recommend Knipex 16 95 01 SB, which is not so quick but much more gentle tool. There is also a version for left handed people.

      @@pzwolski the Stanley Fatmax is different than the Klein. And why does it matter how it does it as long as it works?

    Home Depot $21.97 maybe a little cheaper else where but maybe price just has gone up since one year ago.

    The only downside is the teeth do damage the insulation on single insulated cable. Depending on how much you care, it'll leave teeth marks or it'll force its way through on thinner insulated wires. I only use it to strip the TPS on flat cable just so I don't have to worry about and exposed cable

    Hard to use in a control cabinet. Little too large, cumbersome. Maybe great for open wires out where you have plenty of room..

    Good style strippers for a lot of everyday things but they struggle with things of the more exotic PTFE insulated variety as well as the super tiny stuff.

    I own and love this tool. Just wish they’d have put the cutter not where fingers go. It’s so easy to cut yourself. Even your video around 4:12 shows what I mean. But great tool otherwise.
