    I still remember the first time i saw darkstalkers in the arcade at the mall. I was absolutely blown away by the animation, and the quirky characters. I really wish fighting games like sf would return to 2d sprites, and regard darkstalkers as the best example of art blending with traditional fighting games.

    This is a documentary I utilize often when people don’t know much about Darkstalkers. Easily one of the best, most informative videos on Darkstalkers. Regardless if Capcom brings Darkstalkers back, this franchise is still one of the greatest and most important to gaming, even if it’s not as recognized by the public as other fighters (its influence on some of them cannot be denied). Thank you for this. Your work is very much appreciated.

    Even many years later. I go back to this and still amazed by such an in depth retrospective. A lot of work and reseach went into this. Even the other video Bios for each character. This shows your love of fighting games and subject matter.
    Your retrospectives are the best in the internet. Your Gaming journalism deserves way more recognition.

  • @elenabeatricemartinelli8426

    the ending totally gave me the feels. I shed no tears outside, but inside I was crying. I love this series so much! when I was 4 or 5, I used to draw morrigan and lilith and I kept drawing them since then except for these last 2 years. I'm going to buy darkstalkers resurrection as soon as I can.

    I've watched this Darkstalkers Retrospective a few times now, and every time I see it, I gain a new appreciation for the time and effort that we my into such a thorough exploration of this series. Darkstalkers is one of my all-time favorite video game series, and I am one of those die-hard fans that is dying to have a new entry into the series. Darkstalkers got me through a bit of a lull in Street Fighter when we were constantly getting new updates of what was, essentially, the same game (SF2...don 't get me wrong, I love SF2 to death, but back then, I was craving something new). The characters and the artwork were a breath of fresh air, the gameplay was fluid and exciting (Night Warriors 2 on the Sega Saturn changes my life), and the storyline behind the series is engaging. I hope someday Ono is finally able to get that new DS game greenlit, and this series can hook a brand new generation of fighting game fans. Great job on this DS retrospective!!!!

    Darkstalkers was the fighting game I loved. I am a big classic horror movie buff and the way Darkstalkers was made clicked with me. What made me sad and I think over all hurt Capcom's perceptions of the interest in Darkstalkers was this was never ported to PC. Many of the old fighting game players don't really participate in the console wars as much as they do since it's harder and harder to get into the classics in a modern console and thus prefer the emulation on PC. If they released Darkstalkers on PC, they might have seen a bigger interest, but this is one of those big ifs.
    I do hope for a new Darkstalkers, on PC specifically, and can only hope that Capcom realizes it needs to do this. Especially since they can't make another Marvel anymore, and the new Street Fighter V is focusing more on footsies and tank game play. People are going to want their fast fighting games again.

    I feel like everybody begging for a new darkstalkers in the comments completely missed the whole part of the video explaining WHY it hasn't happened yet. Capcom can't just pop another darkstalkers out its ass, there are hurdles to overcome. It's not just "the executives only care about money so they won't make a new entry to a relatively obscure franchise" (though that's also probably a factor). If they did try, it'd be a new team with new ideas, and without any of the old crew to guide them, the series would lose what originally made it so great. They'd most likely get crazy backlash for trying new things out and not completely sticking to what made the series originally great, and be blamed for the demise of franchise if they fail. Like was said in the video, damned if they do, damned if they don't. That's not to say I don't want DS4 to become reality, but we have to remember it's not gonna be easy. Hopefully Capcom works something out though if they ever get around to it. And hopefully it turns out great.

    • @brainnim9935
      @brainnim9935 Před 7 lety +23

      This is the case with any cult classic game series that's been dormant for a while. And while I agree that things often go wrong when revivals are attempted (see Lunar Dragon Song or Tribes Ascend), there have been rare cases where it does work out (the more recent Doom or Treasure's Star Successor on the Wii).
      That said, I think there's more to people's demand for a new game than just wanting a new game. Even though Lunar Dragon Song was a pretty bad game and Tribes Ascend got pushed out half baked, having the new game injects some life into these aging communities. Even if it's only for a little while, you introduce new players to these great franchises and expand an otherwise dwindling community. Being able to find new fans of your game for that much longer means a lot after basically sustaining off of nothing but rumors for so long.

    This video was well constructed and the choice of music was very appropriate from the Darkstalkers universe. I thought I'd let you know, in the first installment of Darkstalkers when you have full meter all normal attacks do more damage. So it's in your best interest to hold your meter and use a special attack at the end for its difference in attack properties. You've pulled in virtually everything Darkstalkers related, bravo.

    Dude I love your videos. They give an in dept review of not just the games themselves, but also their impact on gaming, their development history, and how they influenced the genre or game field that these games were in. Personally I'd kind of like to see you do a Smash Bros. retrospective since ryu is in smash now and I'd just like to see you tackle a topic like smash. Anyway your videos are amazing and I can't wait to see more in the future.

    Your retrospective series is one of the best i have ever seen. Both the SF and Darkstalkers are my favourite. Can you continue making more of such videos and consider perhaps the KOF series?

    This was incredible, not just the raw information provided but the commentary on the FGC and the gaming industry felt spot on as well.

    I kinda feel they should have just released Darkstalkers 4. I kinda think the recent re-releases failed because they weren't new and didn't have new characters and whatnot. I mean it was great to see them again, but at the end of the day, resurrection was same ol same ol. I'm pretty sure darkstalkers 4 would have sold lots from all the longtime fans and be interesting enough for newcomers. at least the newer players would know where the hell Morrigan came from she's in all the crossovers.

      VideoGameMasters it also was apparently advertised very poorly. But yeah your points make sense. Most of the people that would've bought darkstalkers resurrection would more than likely already have these games in their collection to begin with. If there were new features like characters then it probably would have done better.
