  • Hello and welcome to episode 17 of Buxton Barrow Man my volunteering series! This video is about almost all the pubs of Buxton's past and present.
Note: It's not my best edit ever, sadly my editing software really had it in for me this week trying to end my PC every time I attempted to work on this project.

Great video. I remember the main entrance to "The George Hotel" was actually in The Square. I lived there as a kid 1968-1970, when my parents ran it.

Fantastic video Leo 👌🏼 a couple missing are the Fairfield Conservative club behind the Bull, the Royal British legion which is behind the museum/old court building. Then one which a work colleague told me was the hardwick hotel which was demolished to make the precinct delivery access road.
Holmfield bakery was where the new builds are, it must have closed early 1990s and became the Buxton spa bakery based on harper hill industrial estate.
Keep up the good work 👌🏼👍🏼

Well that was a walk down memory lane 😂 There’s a couple missing, what about the Gaslight ….. and giving it that name prob tells you I haven't been drinking in Buxton for a lot of years

Used to be a long thin pub/bar near the end of Spring Gardens that I used to drink in, in about 1987. Used to drink in the Bakers most nights back in the day.

There was an additional pub on Spring Gardens - The Hardwick - which was demolished in the early 80's to make an access road to the new shopping precinct (between what was Miller's Cafe and the present Cancer Research charity shop)
The Gaslight was originally The Spa Bar (now AMP)

was it a long thin type of place?

    • @NineStones

Yes . The bar was on the right as you went in and two rooms lead to the kitchen and bottlestore. There was a cellar under the main bar area.@@fasthracing

Hi Leo. Great video. Have you seen and read my 2022 book 'Buxton Pubs - Stories of our past and present inns, alehouses, taverns, pubs and bars' published by Buxton Civic Association? Cheers Julian Cohen
