Drive-By Truckers - Danko Manuel Lyrics:
Let the night air cool you off.
Tilt your head back and try to cough.
Don't say nothing 'bout the things you never saw.
Let the night air cool you off.
I ain't living like I should.
A little rest might do me good.
Got to sinking in the place where I once stood.
Now I ain't living like I should.
Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I can only hear it in my head.
Fifteen years ago we owned that road
now it's rolling over us instead.
Richard Manuel is dead.
God forbid you call their bluff.
Like the nightmares ain't enough.
Remember when we used to think that we were tough?
God forbid you call their bluff.
First they make you out to be
the only pirate on the sea.
Then they say Danko would have sounded just like me.
"Is that the man you want to be?"
Can you hear that song? It sounds like gold.
Maybe I could make it bigger overseas.
Fifteen years ago we owned this road
now it only gives us somewhere else to leave.
Something else you can't believe.
Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I can hear poor Richard from the grave
singin' where to reap and when to sow
when you've found another home you have to leave.
Something else you can't believe.

this jam right here. one of those jams that you can listen to when you are about to quit life & it makes you feel better; then at the same time, 6 months later be on top of the world and hear it & its just as beautiful and it evokes equivalent jam pleasure.
Grady Bowen trust. I caught on to DBT/Jason Isbell when I was in FL working 80 hour weeks, traveling 150 days a year for work, going through a divorce with a monkey on my back. This music was my companion. Id listen to it when I was down. Now, things are much better, Im living in Napa, remarried and don't have to travel so much - as you say, on top of the world. Now this song makes me happy when I hear it.
Both ends of the musical ethos spectrum. That's music
Amen
For that know …
Couldn't have said it better
Listened to this when I was rock bottom addict
8 years clean now still Listening :)
Sounds like gold ... Maybe i can hear poor Richard from the grave ... singin' where to reap and when to sow ... when you've found another home you have to leave . Something else you can't believe . Jason Isbell
I first heard this on the 'Across the Great Divide' compilation in 'Uncut' magazine of March 2005. Upon hearing this timeless, world weary masterpiece of a song, I read further and came upon Adrien Begrand's superb August 2004 review (in 'Pop Matters') of the album that this track came from. His take on 'Danko/Manuel' still stays with me all these years later:
......It’s that one song of his, “Danko/Manuel”, that is the clear-cut winner on this record, a work of astonishing simplicity, and undeniable beauty. “Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold,” muses Isbell, as you picture him sitting on the messy, cramped tour bus, enroute to the umpteenth Drive-By Truckers show in a month, thinking about Danko’s smooth, sweet, unbelievably sad voice while staring out the window at the blur of images rolling by at 60 miles per hour. You can envision Isbell blinking the highway hypnosis out of his eyes as he concedes, “Maybe I can only hear it in my head.” Is he made for this kind of wayward life? Will he ever reach the emotional breaking point like Richard Manuel did? Like every character on The Dirty South, you just have to play the hand you’re dealt, and live the hell out of life. “Fifteen years ago they owned that road,” he muses. “Now it’s rolling over us instead.”......
The 8 lines above eloquently and sadly say more than I ever could about this song. To me, you must truly have lived this kind of life on the road to ever approach writing about it in Isbell's way, then also have the poetic ability to articulate those sentiments. What's extraordinary then, is that such a young man as Isbell could make real these profound thoughts and emotions.
This song is unforgettable to me; it goes beyond greatness, as it ponders life on the road and poses the 2 questions asked above, that could be asked by any of us in our daily comings & goings.......Are we made for the kind of lives that we are leading? Will it ever become too much (and will we know when it starts to?). The great artists make you think about this - Isbell did for me in this song.
Couldn't have been said any better
'' It sounds like gold '' this song , really is one of the best songs that Jason Isbell wrote ever ; in fact 10 years after he leaved the band , it remains concert by concert on his live set-list . Specially I love the electric versión with his band 400 Unit on their masterwork live álbum Alabama . I can owned the words that Begrands' review wrote about this song : ''The great artista make you think about this - Isbell did for me in this song'' .
I can't get it out of my head , daily , cant put it aside , day after day ,love it
So did I! So many great tracks on that compilation!
Obviously it's a very, very close call, and I don't expect anyone to agree, but I still think this the best song Jason's ever written.
There's only so many songs that can put you in the shoes of the narrator. There's grit and truth to this song that only few will ever understand.
Amazing this song came out in 2004; it's so hard to find music with this much soul being made in any recent history. The beginning is exactly what this song makes me want to do, just sit outside in the night, on a wood bench, with a warm breeze blowing, cooling off my head out even beyond being contemplative; just down to slow and empty, when the world suddenly feels very simple and sentimental, the same way it did when you were a kid outside. I think we forget how to feel like that sometimes.
Wow.
Pretty amazing what you said.
Yes
"I aint living like I should" Who doesn't know how that feels.
Right.
Corrected 100% Now how many people can say that>?
"only gives us something else to leave"-what a tune!
I'd break down crying if I ever heard this in concert. It's beyond amazing.
Was Lucky enough to hear him play it live a couple years ago one of the best performances ever
How good is this guy!?! Every new thing I hear by J. Isbell is ace and I get a new appreciation for his wonderful vocals.A beautiful Band tribute. Great post even with the lyric anomalies.
Impossible to get this song out of your head.
RIP Levon, back with Rick and Richard at last...
I like Isbell's stuff with the 400 unit, but I think his best work was with the Truckers. Man, what I wouldn't do for a reunion. This song is amazing.
I have to agree. I'm so happy for Mr Isbell's current success but the quality of the songs he wrote with the DBT, considering his tender years, is astonishing. Maybe it's the difference between having to come up with 2-3 songs an album or 10-12!
Like the nightmares ain’t enough
The dirty south, the first CD I ever owned.
Wow
Same. A classic rock album
Great songwriters make a connection with their listeners . This does for me every time I hear this

I'm not sure people really understand just how amazing THE BAND was.
5 geniuses and one voice,
The voice of original Americana.
When they are individually singing
Danko, Manuel, and Helm are beautifully genius in their own respect.
In 3 part harmony they are simply angelic.
Not to mention the fact they all played multiple instruments or what they did for Dylan....I'm not sure most people know how important they truly were.
Macky Mcgehee The Band is the truth!!! It’s like a time machine, sometimes back to the 1800s and others to the Great Depression. How a band in the 60s and 70s did it so well and so beautifully I have never been able to pin down. But it’s never been done since. They played harder than any metal band could hope to do but the intensity is often between the notes. So amazing!

2023 here😀
I don't like bands, never cared for all of any artists work. Never worshiped anyone. Either I liked what they produced, or I'd blow it off and wait for the next offering. This record is extremely visceral. Isbell sings with conviction and his songwriting is beyond his years.
+Johnny Nowhere Listen to Southeastern, sobriety has given him a clarity that's taken his songwriting to another level
Other than your decent comment about Isbell….you sound like a complete idiot..!!
So we're not gonna hang out? Now I am depressed
Larry, I'm not an idiot, but I'm a pretty big asshole. However most of us musicians are, so I don't lose sleep over it. Lol
Made me change my name
Haha ha
Richard Manuel is dead

It’s cause he never had no brothers and sisters from Georgia, Just Pops
I cover this song
I sing 50 instead of 15
I don’t get this song. Is it taking a shot at Danko? “Is that the man I want to be?” What does that mean? The Manuel part I get, he had major addiction problems and hung himself while touring, but how does Danko fit into this? Didn’t he die from a heart attack? (Probably from smoking and an unhealthy lifestyle...he was pretty overweight towards the end...but not necessarily because of touring. He was 55. Lots of men die in their 50s from smoking, unhealthy eating etc...). I want to love this song, but it just doesn’t hit me the way some of Jason Isbell’s other songs do. I love The Band too. Maybe it’s a little too melodramatic and dirge-like for me.
P.S. Elizabeth Danko did not approve.
Where did u hear this?
