    Ken Sluiter is a recording engineer, producer, and mixer out of Chicago. He moved to Los Angeles in 2003, where he worked alongside legendary producers and engineers, such as Andrew Scheps, Greg Fidelman, Joe Chiccarelli and Jim Scott.
    He has an amazing list of credits that includes a staggering list of talent like James Blunt, Weezer, Augustines, Ok Go, Heart, Marc Almond, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. As Ken put it, he has had his "head between speakers for the better part of 25 years."
    He has a lot of lovely gear and the centrepiece of his studio is one of my favorite consoles, the API 1608.

    What an fantastic discussion. I just picked up a 1608 Mk1 this week - and am surfing for some pro-tips on using. But the magic in this video was just being a fly on the wall as you and Ken walk thru his outboard gear and sharing opinions and practical uses. Thanks much.

    Thanks for going to visit Ken again! I watched the first video you guys did probably a dozen times. Great to see he's no slouch in the hardware and tracking department after the first vid focused on in the box mixing - that seems to be the best way to do things nowadays. Good guy with good taste and I learn a lot from both of you.

    loved this warren, you inspire me and remind me how much i love music making( that feeling that you get when ur 16 and you get ur first gtr fx pedal) the first time i played a dd3 delay with a boss pitch shifter when my mum was out for the night! cranked it up n felt like i was in a comic book! the excitement of being inspired for the first time!! it sometimes gets lost along the way as we get a little older and into detail and lose perspective in pursuit of betterment, but ur chanel reminds me that I'm still excited, thanks warren, for you work hard and we really appreciate it man!!

    Hey there Warren! I would love to see some videos on arranging. Both in terms of overall song arrangement for dynamics, bridges, tension/release etc. But also if you know someone who is good at things like horns and strings. I feel that most of us have never worked with real instrument sections like that, only hacked away with sample libraries.

    I really appreciate the I insight behind the reason for recording one way and mixing another. Can you please explain what is the driving decision to use on compressor or mic for a client vs. another client. Is that made during the tracking process or is there a consultation session before you start recording? And how long does that process usually take?

      Only when he's mixing his own recordings. We cannot guarantee when mixing other peoples Productions that they used any relatively high end Hardware. But of course, if you have choice of equipment for yourself then great mics and mic pres will definitely create a large variety of sonic qualities! • @khronscave
      @khronscave Před 6 lety

      I've found myself "going against the grain" somewhat, when it comes to musical tastes at least. Not that i'm a contrarian or anything, but i guess i just ended up liking a hodgepodge of not-exactly-famous bands and whatnot, and from sometimes "left-field" areas of music.
      And i'm sure you already know, i'm not one to throw money at a problem, so uber-expensive and/or "legendary" gear leaves me a bit cold :) Not saying i wouldn't like some, but if i got, say, an LA-2A or a C12 as a gift, i wouldn't "put it on a pedestal" and cherish it forever - i'd sell it, fund parts for some DIY mics (and a bunch of other personal electronic projects, maybe even some future products), and use the rest for a down-payment on a house or something :D
      I dunno, i've always leaned on the more practical side of things. Not necessarily because that's the "best" way, just that it's the way that lent itself best for my needs, wants and possibilities. Just these last few afternoons i've spent "macgyver-ing" a replacement transformer into a Behringer ADA8000 (the 8mic-to-ADAT/ADAT-to-8line converter), that i got for like 50$ a couple months back - partially because i couldn't bring myself to spend 15-20$ on a new physically-compatible transformer, and partially because i had a kinda-sorta suitable one in a wall-wart i found in a local thrift-store a few years ago. Details can be found in the latest post on my blog - khronscave.blogspot.com/
      On the engineering side of things, apart from the Studio One 3 Pro license i caught for half-price last year, i kinda made it... something between a point and a challenge, to get by with only stock and free plugins (or whatever monthly freebies Focusrite offer). I've yet to really "dig into" that area, but i really *should* get around to editing the drums for my band's new album (which i've tracked last summer - yikes!) - hopefully while i'm on holiday back home; i'll likely have nothing better to spend most of my time on there, anyway :) And then maybe start to kinda-sorta mix things together. Maybe we'll even get around to tracking the bass by then, too :D
