I recently watched a number of VLOGS about how families handled the Texas ice storm a few years ago. It was nice to see how well prepared you and your husband are. You two really have your act together!
I am a female veteran who stumbled upon this video because of researching winter preparation. Tell your husband I completely understood what he was saying and unintentionally answered a question I had about how generators worked connected to houses. Also that I am extremely highly impressed with his multiple options for keeping you guys warm in these kinds of situations. I hope that you will take the time to listen to him fully on it. Especially with what we are seeing around the country, weather wise and politically. Stay safe and keep building your family emergency preparations. I think the funniest part of watching this video was that I would pause explain that I understood my own husband, and he was like, "You are mansplaining to me." I was like, well, someone has to, her husband, isn't 😄 🤣 😆 you got a good guy with amazing patience. I can tell he really loves you as you are in one video.

So good to be prepared. With food and supplies you can stay at home warm and safe. Your not making trips to the store. Exposing yourselves and children to the weather and possible sickness. Or even an accident on the road. It's all peace of mind. And safer for family.

Honestly this is prep goals for me and my husband 😆 we have a huge list of what we want to get for just in case purposes but it’s all so expensive, we just gotta get it slowly over time and start budgeting for it! Now I gotta add some stuff to the list though that you guys have and we haven’t heard of before so thank you for sharing

U guys was so smart to prepare ahead of time
We have a generator too. Ours didn't need a new plug and doesn't hook up to the electric panel. It gives you multiple outlets to run extensions cords to appliances you want to use, like fridge, fish tank, etc.
Also, I understand Joe haha! He did well explaining things. I wish we had enough storage room for all of the food and survival things haha. It's good to be prepared
⚠️Portable Generator Safety Tips:
1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards.
2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have carbon monoxide detectors if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Also please never use your generator in your deck or balcony. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house.
3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. It’s also not safe to move your generator while it’s running.
4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords.
It is always important to follow the safety rules when using portable generators. Especially keeping younger children safe.

omg this sent me back to September last year! I wish we lived in a place with that much storage and all, and I would be just like you. I live in Vietnam and in September there was a HUGE lockdown where we couldn't go out AT ALL, not even for groceries, anything. Just to pick up deliveries. And ordering groceries was very difficult because all places were fuuuull with orders. I wish we could've had that much saved food and we wouldn't have had to worry at all 🥺 I totally get wanting to be as prepared as possible 👏

This second storm has me nervous.. we didn’t lose power like you in the last BUT we had Covid and I couldn’t imagine being sick and no power. We are prepared for round 2!
We've had Generac whole house generators in our last 3 houses. We just moved to be closer to our son and the house we bought doesn't have one. We are hoping we make it to spring without needing one, so we can get one then. They've saved us on two occasions in the past. One was after a tornado took out power lines and another was the result of an ice storm taking the lines down.

Have you guys always been preppers or this was just for the snowstorm? I use to live where it snowed and was never a quarter as prepared as you guys. Very impressive 👏

We have a very similar set up except we don't have a generator. We do have a wood stove for heating though which is our normal heat source. But we keep about 3-4 months of food on hand at all times as well as enough formula for that time as well. Also lots of medical supplies from medications to suture kits.
We also live on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere so self sufficiency is just a way of life for us.
So do you have electricity where you live? If so, how come you use a wood stove for your main source of heat? I watched another video where someone did the same and it was so interesting.
@@ryanm7249 We do have electric. For us it's wayyyyy cheaper to heat with a wood stove. Also, since where we live is so remote, if power goes out it can be out for days and weeks at a time. With a wood stove we can still stay warm, heat up snow for water if we run out of our stored water, and have warm meals. Two years ago I ended up cooking a full turkey dinner for Thanksgiving on it because we had no power!
@@Loraeub88 that’s awesome! Do you have gas? If not than wood stove would definitely be more efficient because electric heat is very inefficient and eats up a lot of electricity. Do you have a couple of fans you run to spread the heat around the house? I would think it would be difficult to get heat from a wood stove upstairs even though heat rises.
I find generators and HVAC very interesting and I new pretty much what Joe was talking about. How many kilowatt’s is that generator? It sounds like it’s a portable one. You can actually have generators that are permanently hooked up where you don’t have to put it in place. I loved this video!
It looks like you don't have to ground the generator. We had a generator back in Miami. My dad got it after Hurricane Andrew. Do you not need to ground it anymore?
Also at Walmart they have a sound machine that works from a plug and batteries. It's definitely cheap crap, but it works in a pinch
This is very helpful, thank you. Also how do you track expirations and stuff. I know it would drive me crazy to track food expirations etc. Also Joe was so right not just him but you both need to learn how to work all the stuff especially when the situation comes and you divide tasks (fingers crossed it never gets that bad). Before we retired, my husband had a generator installed that automatically runs our whole house when the power is out. It’s the best.
Those are the good ones! It sounds like they have a portable one that you have to plug in. The ones that are already always in place and installed are the best! It will automatically turn on when power goes out.
If you buy a tri fuel generator you can have an electrician install a gas T to your main line in the house and have natural gas if you didn’t have propane to power up.
I speak Chinese and KINDA understood what Joe was talking about so I must be a rare creature haha. We live in California and don't have many instances of disaster (I guess just the state being on fire 😬) but I still found this video so interesting and had good tips. I showed it to my husband and was pretty into it haha

Texas Winter Storm of 2021 survivor here 🤚 Not too much at all! This set up would've made the difference between life and death for some people in Texas last year. Good for you for getting ahead and being proactive. You can never be too prepared these days.
My brother was in his trailer asleep and a tree fell on his trailer and by the grace of god my brother was completely fine it walked out his trailer and sent us a video and was like well shit he has a dark humor
You can store the meat outside in the snow if all your power goes out by any chance. That's just like a last resort thing, especially at night. You just have to be careful to move it in a better place if the weather becomes too hot.

@@KaylaBuell I've seen Amish people do that and also in some cities in Russia where it's extremely cold outside all the time 😁. Amish people have a whole house with chunks of ice, house is insulated really well and that's how they keep it frozen or cold during the summer/spring time. I'm sure you can find a place with a lot of shade, fill it with snow and keep your meat and groceries there.
I'm from Europe and here my grandparents always had a separate small house for their food, many people even make a basement that stays cold during the summer. Really useful and they tend to smoke meat or can it if they have too much and don't want it to get bad.
I do this in Switzerland when I run out of space in the refrigerator. It's easy to run out of space. Our fridge holds 2 days of food. My stuff goes outside when a store is closed for 3-4 days for a holiday.
I'm in central VA and I did this for our last storm! I just put all my fridge food in plastic bins and put them on our deck with snow piled around them.
Did you say the meat in your deep freezer is covered by insurance? I didn't know that was a thing.
It’s covered by the company we buy the meat from. It’s a local company that sources meats from farmers around here and part of what we pay for is insurance on that meat. If the power were to go out and it spoiled, they’d replace it. Part of their service.
