    That was really helpful David! Thank you for making this video. Would like to see a video on non-chord tones that focus on non-diatonic non-chord tones/notes. Thanks again! Learned a lot and like how you explain the different types of non-chord tones.

    9:28 ive just started learning piano and I was playing jingle bells and the effect of the suspensions in that song, like, clicked with me, I had an epiphany, like, "Oh, so that's why non-chord tones are so important" and that has brought me to this video.

    Hm. Something I've always been confused about is why it matters what comes before the non-chord tone. For example, if a song started with a C Major chord, and the right hand had a D on top that resolves down to C immediately after, wouldn't that still be a 9-8 suspension, despite that D not initially being approached by common tone? If I had to guess, I suppose that since it's played at the same time, it might just be considered part of the chord, simply being named a Cadd9 chord, making that D *NOT* a non-chord tone. Just thinking out loud I guess.

    Here is a silly question... what do you call in a C Major chord.... C down to A back up to C? Is that a neighbor tone or an escape tone? The first C is on the beat with a dotted 8th to a 16th A and back to C on beat 2.

    What about pedal point?

  • @armansrsa
    @armansrsa Před 3 lety

    The A natural is a 6th which makes the C harmony an Amin harmony so wouldnt we say that it is a chord tone but one that changes the chord to Amin?

    • @DavidEFarrell
      @DavidEFarrell  Před 3 lety

      Analysis is both interpretive as well as descriptive. Sometimes the notes of a chord are present, but we choose not to describe that chord as being functionally present based on the nature of the music and the chord progression.
