- I visited my friend Sven Yrvind at his workshop in Sweden. We talk about the boat he is currently building and his plans to sail it to New Zealand. Yrvind has an amazing history of building and sailing small boats. Follow his channel and support his voyage at the two links below.

Thanks so much for supporting him. Have been following him ever since you turned us on to him. A year or so ago. Thanks Sam for being a good person. And a good sailor.
"The more comfortable you are, the quicker you get old" - what a source of wisdom :-)
That's something I'm gonna remember for the rest of my life.
this is actually backed up by science. doing things that fill you with "awe", traveling to amazing places that dont feel real, doing insane things like sailing an ocean on a tiny boat, causing your brain to work overtime in survival mode, etc. are proven to counteract dementia and Alzheimer's.
"I'll have a place for you to sit when we meet again in a foreign port."
Sam, that interview meant as much to Sven as it meant to you. He is designing his boat so that you have a place to sit when the two of you meet up again.
"I wish I had, I like to have more time to spend on boats." That about sums it up.
Sam, I trust you realize that you are looking at your future self. I hope CZcams is still a thing by then because I’ll be watching.
Loved this video. Sam, you did a fantastic job of posing questions to draw a beautiful story out of Yrvind. Yrvind, you've given my son a priceless gift. He's admired and followed you for a long time. Thank you for the kindnesses you've shown him.
He is giving good friendship. You can be proud of your son.
@@SvenYrvindExlex i extend the joy of my daughter sharing the time seeing her son-, my grandson , with his icon , Sven!
Such a beautiful comment!! Heja Sven & Sam from a fellow Sam!
Sven is not done, but when he is, he should rest proud - proud of his work and confident that sailors like Sam Holmes will tell his story, while writing his own. This is by far my favorite sailing channel.
Now we have to convince Sven to make his own 40 minute videos! It was great to hear him speak for so long. Thanks!
Don't know if that is what you mean but he has a channel : czcams.com/channels/ptM0nqGDJLz14oP6ROdKRw.html
'small boat, small problems'. Guy's got balls of steel. Thks, great interview
Sven was one of my choldhod heroes. Almost a myth too me, someone I never expected to meet other than in books. And now here he is almost in front of me thanks too the internet an of Sam of course. Just wonderfull
“Small boats small problems” classic. Stay and help build the boat this winter. I bet both your channels go crazy!
Best piece of advice Sam could possibly get. I could tell Sven really, really looked forward to meeting Sam for this interview.
This is just beautiful. A story as old as time, the passing of knowledge from a master who has perfected his craft to a worthy successor.
Sven is finally getting the credit he deserves in sailing and boat building via You Tube.
Sven's memories of past sailing deployments are enough for several blue water sailors' lifetimes. Still not satiated, he's confidently building his ultimate craft for yet another circumnavigation - truly amazing focus! No moss grows on him - or you, Sam! Bon voyage to you both!
PS: If you can transcribe and subtitle at some point in future, this interview would be great for a museum or part of a movie.
Strictly speaking not a circumnavigation - planned to go only to New Zealand
Semicircum navigation. An epic proposition non the less.
A plan is a plan next week there may be an other plan
What a fantastic video. Like minds spanning the generations through their shared passion for sailing. Very inspiring.
This interview is such a unique experience. Thank you for your patience talking to such an interesting and inspiring man. Giving him the respectful time to speak. So many people these days lack the patience to hear out someone that runs at such a slow pace.
i’ve never thought about designing and building a sailboat myself, or even sailed before; but i hung around for 40 min because what you guys are doing is unique, and freaking awesome! keep up the good work!
Sam, you did a wonderful job, of bringing us along in your adventures. Thank you!
Excellent that you documented this and picked his brain. Expertise such as his is becoming rarer and rarer as the years go on. Thanks Sam.
I really like the live updates at the end of the videos. I think it connects with the viewer more.
Thanks for that great story on Yvinds new boat
This was an unexpected pleasure Sam. Huge thanks. I hadn't heard of Sven before and at the start of the video his softly spoken voice was a tiny bit difficult to hear. But that was just me.
As the video progressed and Sven started to casually throw out gem after gem of his wisdom, common sense and lessons learned from experience, I became transfixed and was hanging on his every word. Right to the end. What he seems to do effortlessly, is blend the traditional and modern to create a hybrid that does exactly what he needs it to. With minimal complication.
"Small boat, small problems." I've heard before. But hearing it from a master builder and sailor, really gives me pause for thought.
Thanks again Sam. This was pure gold and ought to be a must see, for everyone contemplating long distance sailing. Off to find Sven's channel and subscribe. Kindest from Portrush, on the beautiful North Coast of Northern Ireland :)
PS Who was the hottie behind the camera? Your 'squeeze'? You lucky man! :)
oh the vast amount of knowledge and information from this wonderful man...his ideas and experience just blows my mind...please record as much from him so we dont lose his priceless contribution to the world of sailing...
Sven, you are a living legend, and your voyages are monumental. Thank you, so much, for allowing us this glimpse into your prolific and amazing sailing career.
What a treat this morning 💯two of my favorite sailors on together for more than a couple minutes 👍this is awesome and thanks to both of you for doing this💯stay safe 💯🙏🙏🙏🙏
Two amazing sailors, both legends in sailing history. Thanks Sam for this great video ⛵️⛵️⛵️🥰
Very good video!
2 legends in 1 video!!!! Sven and Sam!!!
Sven's awesome ... he just keeps going and going. Quite the inspiration. Thanks for posting, Sam.
It took me two minutes to realize Sam finally had a camera person. This is the way to shoot videos. Oh I heard her voice. Sam has a girl in every country. And of course you’re behind editing. You’re enjoying hanging out with all these girls and soaking up all the local sights. Enjoy!
Sven is a legend. I am so glad you got a budding friendship and a cou-ple of interviews on video. We need to cherish the elders and keepers of knowledge.
Sam, I love this channel, thank you for doing this.
Great video. I hope you can do another one with him when his boat is further along. Thank you.
What an amazing man. Thank you Sam for documenting his awesome craftsmanship.

Old and young friends together, thats great!

Double legends!
Fantastiskt 👍
Small boat small problems. Definitely true. I have a little lady, a 21 footer, and I never changed it for a larger boat for this very reason.
Good man!
Sven showing us the roopes, brilliant,,,,absolute genius
Wonderful video with Sven, Sam! Thank you for filming, Holly! Thank you for hosting these two, Sven! Sam - I wish I could give this 6 thumbs up - thank you for this vid!
You're a pair of legends. Between the two of you, I have about your average age - I only wish I had a fraction of your combined experience and wisdom! Great video, and an important chronicle.
very informative video, thanks a lot, it will server for future generations
Välkommen till Sverige, Sam!
I honestly can't believe we are now in the same country. I started following your channel last autumn and now here we are. The wrong coast, but still pretty close. =)
I love listening to Sven talk, I could listen all day! Thank you for this, he always makes very short clips and I want more. Subbed his channel the first time you mentioned him. Awesome content from both of you.
Wonderful interview. Thank you for sharing this with us. Sven is so interesting. He is a wealth of knowledge.
Safe journey. S/V Cork ~
Sailed a Junk rig. Ideal for sailing downwind and extremely safe reefing. All controlled from the cockpit. No need to make dangerous sail changes in storms; just lowered the sail from the dry!!
great video! Sven is an inspiration. He is truly walking his own path. thank you for sharing Sam!
thanks for the video Sam. all the best as you travel about. cheers
What Sven creates is brilliant. I think he may enjoy prototyping with some CAD modelling software.
Such a lovely sight seeing such lovely sailors. Thank you for posting this video
Wow i got so happy to see both you and Sven in the same video again and just 33 seconds ago! Thank you for all your amazing videos!!

Glad you're capturing Sven's story. Even though I'll never build a boat, it's so interesting listening to him share his knowledge! Joining his yt channel!

This guy is ab absolute legend!
great video Sam. Sven is such an interesting guy.
Thank you for making this one long, it had to be!
So many ingenious ideas!
So grateful for even just polyesters rope. So awesome what a cool dude
Man the tales he must have!! Välkommen till Sverige! (Welcome to Sweden!)
Thanks! He tells me new stories every time i see him. Amazing guy.
I met Tristan Jones when I was a kid, not many legends like Sven around anymore, you are lucky Sam. Safe passages !!
Sam its always best when you get little nuggets from a master like Yrvind......
But always remember when you know everything there is to know about sailing,
its time to go meet the Big Sailor!.......
I'd say don't go for records go for a safe and successful journey, have fun visit and learn as you go
I think Yrvind does that, and tries to improve to better boats....little things one step at a time!
Amazing man for one so old, yet so young at heart. To travel the world via the big wide oceans. I have seen how dangerous it can be being on a very large ship let alone on a same sail boat. I know he makes them waterproof but it must be one hell of a ride on those massive waves that can get up to 60 mtrs in height. Glad he will be able to sit up in this one rather than lay down all the time like the other one for months at a time. I think he only gets lonely around people and loved being alone.
Nice workshop.
Hot damn glad Sam came back to be with you again for a few
Solo sailing, no problem. Solo sailing in a boat little bigger than a coffin that you can't even stand up in? No way! Mad respect for this guy, I couldn't do it.
Great video!
A real Viking.
I am not into sailing, but after this video I get sailing....
Welcome to Sweden Sam! You choosed the worst time of the year🥶⛈😂😂
Haha. Thanks. Hence my quick escape to Croatia lol
@@samholmessailing 😂 good choice 👍
No bad weather just bad clothes!
Svensk legend ;) it's nice know there's people like him around, he's pushing it on the Frontline, progressive...
Great stuff 👍👍
The definition of wisdom
It is amazing that Sven is building sailboats and sailing the oceans. I suppose his custom sailboat is his nursing home.
Good stuff 👍
Guys like Sven make it clear how the Vikings of yore sailed across the Atlantic and explored the North American continent long before any Southern European explorers found their way.
Some brave sailers for sure!
Or that one of the best if them didn't need a clan.
I always found it funny how how Vikings named Greenland and the Canadian coast was Vinland. There was no wine in Vinland and no green in Greenland.
"Southern European" Is a little unfriendly...Remember that was an Italian sailor that gave the name to America.
Good...thanks...
Two legends 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
