    Disney Lorcana is experiencing one of the most wild markets I have ever seen. With people looking to build lorcana meta decks as well as play with all the starter products, I did not see the sales comparing as well as they have to games like Magic the Gathering and Flesh and Blood. Lorcana is even getting close to Pokemon in some areas - let's talk about the lorcana market.

    I like collecting it. But at the same time, I knew I would buy this before I saw the gamplay. I'm a graphic designer and was inspired by disney growing up. I hope to work for something Disney-related one day. I also love playing it, its actually very fun.

    I’ve been an avid Pokémon TCG collector since they released in the 90s. I’ve gotten my girls into but the past pack opening and awesome pulls, they check out. However with lorcana, they are all in and it’s so fun to watch them collect and binder their sets and take pride in their collection. Also with collectibility, this isn’t some new unknown product, it’s disney and people have gone nuts over Disney collecting for decades. I think they will be a solid collectible.

  • @TSDreamCreative
    @TSDreamCreative Před 6 měsíci +4

    I think the only real way to gauge collectibility and long term "value" is to see where the game goes from here and if demand actually increases. I am suspecting the demand is not nearly as high as those initial months. Ultimately, it will come down to how Ravensburger approaches organize play and if they also improve print quality and the uniqueness of the cards.

    Great video, love your positivity and analysis, the TCGplayer data you provide is always fascinating
    Lorcana has a lot of interesting avenues of collectibility. I personally love the convention promos - I’m a proud owner of one of 900 D23 collector sets, I own all the unique stamp Musketeer promos, these are cards that will never be reprinted again, I love them and proudly display them
    There’s also interesting stuff happening with the First Chapter troves, they’re going for absurd numbers because we know there won’t be any more. And the same thing will happen with First Chapter boxes eventually - they’ll eventually stop printing it, the supply will eventually get absorbed by the community, and all of a sudden TFC boxes will be finite in supply. Exactly like you said this will take time and has to happen organically

    I think you’re mistaking something, lorcana isn’t trying to get the old Pokémon and mtg fanbase full of old expired people, they are targeting the fresh young millions of children that go Disneyland every day and watch Disney movies in their free time.. not you no offence just like when we watched Pokémon as kids so we collected it… that’s how they build the community as these children grow older new ones come into it 24/7 and the player base grows

    • @aslushymachine
      @aslushymachine Před 2 měsíci

      I think Lorcana is more for an even wider range of audience than MTG or Pokemon soley because Disney is Nostalgic for every living generation, where MTG and Pokemon are nostalgic to ppl born in or fans of the 90s. I just started collecting Lorcana and been collecting Pokemon and MTG so fans of those are still a possible audience, though I agree Disney is typically for kids and teenagers, its been around for at least 20 years longer than MTG and Pokemon so saying its only for a fresh young people is still wrong. Also Pokemon is just as attractive to very young kids anyway.

    • @eurostar0711
      @eurostar0711 Před měsícem

      Thats why Lorcana WILL be collectible in the future. Pokemon was targeting fresh young children back in the 90s, now that they grew up and have jobs (and disposable income) it has become heavily collectible. You collect what kids are buying, because when THEY get older they'll be spending lots of cash on that stuf.

    MTG didn't start having "expensive" cards for 2+ years. (yes a couple had higher price tags, due to the initial "whoops these were too powerful we won't be making more" part) Even the P9 and other ABU "never reprint" cards didn't jump into crazy prices to a decade.. even then.. they weren't absurd.. it was another decade before they lept into serious financial decisions to buy a single card.. for VERY FEW cards.
    If not for the last few years, the prices would still, likely be much much more down to Earth.
    Collectability takes a whole generation (or two). What kids play, watch, etc.. NOW is not "collectable" NOW... but in 20-30 years, when they want a piece of their childhood? THEN it starts to command those prices. Hence.. MTG, 80's-90's toys, and old Video Games/systems.

    You make a lot of good points, they are trying not to become the tcg that cares about "value" an that approach can grow value. Afterall the Pokemon sets i grew up with weren't scarce of any supply or anything. So if they stick with that approach I see steady growth in the future.

    Lorcana can be either the next Pokémon or the next MetaZoo.
    If they don't go back on their word on printing to the ground, it's definitely gonna be the latter. There has to be FOMO to attract new players and keep existing ones interested and safe from holding worthless cardboard.
    It's that simple.

      1st edition of Ch1 Lorcana will never be as expensive as pokemon early releases. Never. Even Lorcana maxis know that.

    I like Lorcana, but I think back to another game with a strong IP with an established collector community, a company well versed in making TCGs and a strong player base with good Organized Play. The Transformers TCG was made by WoTC, sold well, and then was canceled after five sets. I havent checked on the prices of sealed product or singles of that game but I don't think they're great. Star Wars Destiny by Fantasy Flight is another example of a popular IP, good fanbase, Organized Plat and support getting abruptly canceled.
    I'm not saying this will happen to Lorcana but its what makes me leery of investing.

    First off, excellent video as usual. Second, this is not a new take, but there's a fine line between collecting and investing. In my opinion, once you start purchasing collectables for the sole sake of monetary value, you are investing not collecting. The two can co-exist for sure, but they are distributed different. Collecting should be something you enjoy. If you enjoy investing than your really just investing in "things" and collecting money. I personally find joy in collecting things that are obscurely not valuable. For example, I have a large and growing collection of MTG phase rules cards that come in precon decks. I keep them in a white box and when ever i get a new one it makes me laugh a little adding another one to the group. Collect what makes you happy. It might one day be valuable but even it hits zero you'll be happy.

    Sets of any TCG are only "Collectable" from a financial point if the cards are out of print, card quantities of singles are low, and the demand is high. Right now Lorcana is in the market penetration phase. It needs to release product to consumers, have a tournament scene, and be on the shelves of stores. In a few years depending on the reprint policies of the company, the cards from the first few sets may see a rise in value. MTG wasn't a collectable overnight.

    So what is your definition of "collectible"? Are you talking about the ability to resell the product at some point for a profit, or are you talking about people buying and building sets to keep as a collection with no intention of selling it? Again, I think you simply can not treat this like any other TCG, because the element of Disney throws what you would normally see with other TCGs. The typical Disney collector (pins, ears, etc) is not a typical TCG player or collector, so comparing this product to others is simply going to fall apart at some point. I spend the holidays doing a couple live FB events (box openings, Lorcana lessons, etc) in Disney pin collecting groups and those folks are very different than the people I play with at the two leagues I play in each week. They are still trying to figure out where this fits in their collection, or if it does, but for the folks who are collecting it building sets (even funny that many who have never played it yet, are building master sets of 4 of each card), building foil sets, etc.
    For me the biggest question will be can Disney move people from the collector side to the player side? So I think they will but this is where local game stores need to put aside what they believe they know about players, because I hear over and over in the Disney community how they feel they are not welcomed, nobody will explain how to play the game to them, etc. I am hopeful that over the next month that the leagues I play in locally will see an increase in players, so we can grow the community.
    I think Ravensburger may have failed to understand the demand at the inital launch but we have to remember that they blew all the numbers of normal new TCG IPs out of the water. So now with more product available, and those items still selling all over the place, of course the prices will come back down to what they should have normally been. I can't wait for the Inklands set to drop.

      @@dajusta87why? That sounds bad for an NFT or something. This is a game. One that the company wants people to play. Why would you want millions of customers to not be able to get a card or cards so that reseller scalpers get the money, and people still don’t have access to your game. If you’re selling packs at 6 a pop, and you know there’s millions of people wanting to buy, limiting it quite literally hurts you and helps a random guy at a tcg show not benefiting your company.. probably not even paying taxes like you are.
      I’ll buy and play lorcana. I remember buying and playing mtg when it came out. We would use em as throwing weapons like gambit, rip some up on a loss.. that’s hundreds of dollars gone nowadays in worth, but, we played to play. I don’t think wizards knew it was going to get so big, nor did we. Tcgs have the benefit of hindsight now with Pokémon, mtg, yugioh etc.. With such a successful IP as Disney, they know they can do whatever they want. If they’re gonna minimize print of the first set, you can guarantee there will be no reason to play the rest of it. It’s going to be rocket high prices when Disney stuff is high anyway.
      You won’t be able to make a competitive deck, period, if that were the case. They need the scene, kids collecting for the lulz won’t allow them to make 4 per year that anyone would care about besides the most hardcore Disney collector.
      If it were the case, like MTG for us after like Mirage, we just proxied EVERYTHING. Literally. There was some cost for printing, but, in essence 0 dollars.
      When you’re a competitive TCG player, and you need 1 card for your theorycraft build, and it’s going to cost 465 dollars but you want to run it through a hundred hours of testing… get to cutting printer paper.. draw a dick, write out the card, and viola, proxy deck, 0 cost, no monies for you company. I’d rather the card, but if they support scalpers over players, I’m going to have a full set tomorrow night for free..
      I’ve gotten good at drawing dicks where the art would be. If you want a full proxy deck with dick art, let me know. Or, if they just make the damn game and we can get the cards, then, just get the cards. I don’t support scalpers, I don’t support games that support scalpers over players. Dick art.. always remember that. Proxy dick art.

    I'm very skeptical on Lorcana. Ravensburger saying they were going to print sets into the ground as well as Disney favorable ratings falling hard.
    Glad to see your family enjoying it though. I do see a lot of play of it at my LGS so hopefully player sales keep it going.

      There are very few brands or IP that can have a TCG that can go the distance. It takes not only the TCG but the whole brand or IP behind it to make sure people can be interested for 10-20+ years to come. Pokemon did it with their game, merch, shows, etc and Disney Lorcana has the same factors that could help it go the distance. None of the other TCGs today has the same factors that have supported Pokemon or the same factors that can support Lorcana. If there was a game that I would not be surprise to still see being played after 10+ years, it would be Disney Lorcana.

      @portalmasterry6765 I get where your coming from. With recent Disney failures I'm not sure if the IP can do that still.

      @@audrisampson Disney's failure and downtrend in other avenues will probably have little to no effect on the TCG. People have little clue on how big Disney's collectible market is and regardless of how Disney performs, most of those who collect Disney do not care.
      Many folks in the collectible space do not understand that one aspect of pokemon collecting that has kept the TCG going. That aspect are the casual folks, moms, dads and just regular kids or "kids-at-heart" who crack packs, collect merch and just enjoy the brand for what it is. The same demographic exists in the world of Disney collectibles.
      Right now the sales data has shown the huge interest in this game and this is not even 1 year into it.
      Also people do not still see the other IP that Disney can pull into Lorcana. Forget Star Wars and Marvel. Disney has a ton of other IP that has fans from a wide range of generations.

    I really like Lorcana but the pulls from boxes and single packs are horrible. I've spent so much money on them and only have pulled one holo. I also collect and play Pokemon and Magic and I get much much better pulls from them, and also easier to find. This has pushed me away from Lorcana.

      You must have only opened one pack or got an enchanted in every pack except one because you're garunteed a holo every pack, which has the possibility of an enhanced taking the slot instead.

      @@ryciasoulblight3390 I get the holo's in every pack, but I meant the rare enchanted ones. I managed to pull an enchanted Simba in a first chapter started deck by luck, which I found at a local store that charged me 25$ for it. But after that no more, only the regualr holos you get with every pack. I have bought two full boxes and many, many packs of chapter one and two and nothing.
