  • Melanie is from Nairn, a Victorian seaside town right on the Moray Firth in the Highlands. She makes bold, contemporary jewellery in polymer, inspired by the organic patterns, textures and colours she sees in the natural landscape around her. Her techniques are inspired by the Japanese metalworking process called 'mokume gane', where many thin layers of material are built up, then shaved away to reveal the patterns below.

I have always been fascinated with Melanie Muir’s work. I didn’t know all her pieces were Mokume Gane, although I will admit that all the pieces of hers I’ve ever seen were Mokume Gane. I have multiple templates and texture mats from her designs and I use them all the time, especially the textures. They definitely are very organic looking. It was wonderful to see an interview and get a little peak into what inspires her.

I’ve heard so many polymer clay artists refer to Melanie Muir. Now I know why. I’m flawed by her creativity and technique. Stunning!

I began using this technique more than 11 years ago. I would like you to give credit as due.
