In this Part 2 I complete some road side tuning on my Aprilia RS 125. This Dellorto PHBH28 carburettor comes standard on the later model of Aprilia RS 125.
My current Dellorto PHBH28 SETTINGS are:
    Fuel screw - 2 3/4 turns out.
Needle - 2nd clip from top.
My current Dellorto PHBH28 JETS are:
    Pilot jet - 60.
    Emulsion Tube - B40.
    Needle shape - X2.
    Mixer tube - BN266.
    Main jet - 125.
    Float needle - 250.
    Choke jet - 70.
    Thanks again, Tom Did It.

I have also had people stopping to check if i'm ok when I had standing on the roadside for adjusting carbs! It's a good thing of course, there is still some hope for humanity :)
And I have been taught for about 30 years that you count needle position from bottom and up, and I think it says the same in Dellorto's documentation. So it's a good thing that you wrote that you count from top so people cant get confused. I'm currently fixing a friends RS and this video was interesting for me to get some settings to start of with. But I live in sweden so climate differs a bit I think. But the bike has gone from undrivable to be pretty much as yours is in this video. Last 125cc 2-stroke I drove was a RD125 many years ago, so testing the RS was fun. Biggest difference is no doubt the handling and brakes! It's like night and day :) No wobble and sway here :)

Now I'm mad at the algorithm for recommending this to me only after I took my new to me 1986 Garelli 125GTA (my first ever 2-stroke, a bike that had sat for years, just 1600km on the clock) for a ride, only to kill the engine in 100km because I didn't do a proper check of the shitty rubber between the carb and engine...it had cracked and killed the engine. No replacement cylinder and piston to be found anywhere. And because I was not aware of the symptoms of an air leak there, nor the consequences. 😢
At least now I know. I hope others see it and educate themselves before they kill their bike like I killed mine.
    Cheers!

Tsvetan, thanks for leaving a message.
I had to Google this bike. It looks fantastic, and what a great find with only 1600km on the clock!
That’s bad news about the air leak my friend. It’s a common problem with old bikes, regardless of the mileage, the rubbers seals throughout the bike start to harden and deteriorate. As I found with my low mileage 2010 Aprilia, the engine is not mechanically worn out, but the seals need replacing.
Not sure what to suggest with your Garelli…. Is it badly damaged? Bent rod, piston exploded, scared barrel?
Good luck 🤞 finding the parts

@@tomdidit4216 Both piston and the nikasil surface of the cylinder are scratched. The spark plug was melted. I'm told there's a machine shop a couple of hours from me that specialises in this sort of engine repairs. Cylinder machining and matching pistons. I hope they both can and will agree to rebuild it! I saw the bike and immediately loved it so I hope I can revive it. Those 100km before its motor seized were a great and very different experience from my 650 Transalp, '19 S1000R and other 4-stroke bikes I've been on.
      Cheers!
Update: They can't fix a cylinder with ports as the ones on our 2-atrokes so I'm stuck until I find new parts. 😢

Hi Martin. Thank you for your comment.
My Aprilia work shop manual recommends 8,9 or 10. I believe the 10ES is the coldest operating plug and is usually used for racing. As they burn colder, they are great constant wide open throttle conditions. As the plug number decreases 9,8 they operate a bit warmer, with 8 being the warmest recommended plug (according to the manual)
I found the 9 is fairly cheap and works best for me.
If your bike runs best with a BR10ES, continue to use it👍.

    • @tomdidit4216
      @tomdidit4216  Před 2 lety

      Hi there Biconnecc.
In my case, the stuttering around the middle RPM was caused by a rich condition. I was able to fix this by moving the C-clip on the needle up a notch. This procedure can help make the midrange mixture leaner.
Try this if you wish, with care. Monitor as you ride and adjust accordingly.

      Greetings Andy.
These bike do tend to vibrate a bit more than modern 4 strokes.
Excessive vibration could be one of many things….
You mention the engine has been recently rebuilt - I’d suggest checking the engine bolts are tight. Worst case, the bottom end may be worn out?? Otherwise, I’d have the mechanic check it over.
      Good luck 🤞!!

      Hi Tom,
So just a quick one what controls our full throttle position so I feel as tho the bikes not getting enough fuel after around 7.5k and I’m relying on the powervalve but I can feel a struggle between 6-8k like on your video here when you pull the throttle back your bike takes off I can see a difference for sure because round town under 6k the bike is fine but when I want to open it up it’s like it’s struggling for fuel and I’ve noticed that mine won’t even go into the red limit where as I’ve seen some Ed’s rev to 12-13k but mine kinda won’t go past 11k? I have fitted a new air filter recently but a put a 128 main jet in to try and compensate for the bigger air intake? Just wondering if you have any thoughts
      Cheers pal

      Hi there.
This is strange… Has the bike been running ok and suddenly started playing up??
I’d get the power valve operational. If it is stuck in the closed position, it could alter the port timing and cause a restriction.
Then I’d be cleaning the carb and restore to standard jetting.
Other than that, it’s hard to diagnose a fault without having a look.
Fingers crossed you’ll sort it mate
      Cheers

what does plug chop reading do/reads?

    • @tomdidit4216
      @tomdidit4216  Před 2 lety

      Hi Roronoa.
My very first video was about the plug chop process. Check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.
Basically, the spark plug will create a small carbon band around the porcelain insulator. This bad will tell you if your main jet is too rich or too lean.
It’s a very important step of tuning a 2 stroke.
      Thanks for your comment.
      Cheers

The later Aprilia bikes (like mine) came with a 28mm carb. The earlier rounded model of RS bike came with a larger 34mm carb.
According to Aprilia forums the 34mm carb is the way to go as it adds power throughout the rev range👍
It seems the older bikes were not as restricted as the newer bikes.
