Meg! How delightful and smart your tips are for having a successful garage sale! We are moving to Mexico in 2024 and need to sell everything in our house. It's a daunting adventure and I didn't even know where to start planning for a yard sale. Thanks so much for all your suggestions! Jax

I’m doing my first garage sale so I thank you for your knowledge. I’ve bought groups of stuff in the past because of the artsy way it was displayed so I’ll use that sales tip for sure. It worked on me.

I have never heard of anyone using any card swipe at a garage sale. I accept and buy in only cash. I take out $50 in singles and $50 in $5 before I hold a sale. Most people, even buyers, have change because it's easier to bargain.

Well I accept charges and debit cards - customers tend to spend more.

@@blasu23 Where I live, most people will not spend more than $5 on an item. Many people try to bargain you down to $1. New floor lamp priced at $5, I had a person try to offer me $1. When prices are super low, it's an insult. The most anyone has ever spent on one item at my sale was $30.

@@athenapoe3377 Not sure where you live but I'm in The Woodlands (Houston). Many times, people have said "oh I don't have any more monbey with me or I already spent my cash." If I had accepted cards then, I would have made a lot more sales. I have also been researching lots of garage sale sites and one lady who said she made $1100 in 2 days says by accepting debit cards, you will triple your sales. Buit you're right, if they're only spending $5 on a sale, I wouldn't bother with cards. But I'm a crafter, having done shows for 25 years so I'm set up so why not accept them. Plus, maybe if you had offered that option, your sales would have been lots more than $5.

@@blasu23 I don't think I have enough items for $1100+ in sales. I try not to let my house fill up with that much unnecessary stuff. Usually, my husband and I have a once a year cleanout of clothes, records, and other small items. The bigger ticket items- most people will say the items are nice, but they don't buy them even when we are practically giving it away. For example, we have tons of crystal and fine china. We were selling a fine china set, handpainted in Japan in the 1920s for $25 (it's worth way more than that). People thought it was nice, but wouldn't buy. They bought the stuff made in China that was modern. Things that I didn't think would sell, did- clothes, DVDs, detergent, etc.
