  • The best time of the year to go on an African safari is during the hot dry season. This season has the shortest grass and the vegetation is not very thick. This allows tourists to easily see most of the animals since they are not hiding in tall grass.

    Hi Anthony, I have just discovered your channel and plan to watch all your videos. It makes me nostalgic since I lived in Kenya for two years (1979-1981) while a US Peace Corps volunteer. I also brought my family back for a 10 day safari in 2005. That was organized by Somak and included Samburu, Mt Lodge, Nakuru and the Mara plus stops along the way for other tourist traps. Our driver/guide was from Kakamega and I served in Busia so we had lots to talk about. He was fantastic and we saw everything that we wanted to see. My wife and I are hoping to return again in maybe 2024. Gives me time to save and hopefully for this virus to run its course. I also need to brush up on my Swahili which is beyond rusty. Please stay safe and keep the videos coming from my second home.

    I so agree with your information. I went to the Masai Mara in Janaury, and it rained and the lodge flooded due to the water in the river rising. Masai guy had to give me a piggy back ride to the reception area. I learned to go during the dry season. Thanks for your info!

    Hi Anthony as usual you talk a lot of common sense. I agree that it is good to visit one of the less known parks, my last visit was to Ruha in Tanzania which is very large but not over crowed. Many days we would only see 3 - 4 other vehicles but plenty of game. Our guide was a big factor.
    Thanks again for a great video.

      I am going to Kenya and Tanzania on an 11 day guided tour. I added two days to the beginning to recover from jet lag. I also added two morning hot air balloon rides at about $400 each. (I signed up for one and then fretted I would miss the experience if the weather was bad that day, so I signed up for both. lol) The total trip, with air fare from Chicago and trip insurance , was a bit over 8K. I’m excited, and anxious!

    Hi Antony, is mid-February an ok time to visit Tanzania? My partner is not great with heat and is concerned she won't cope very well. Weather forecasts suggest it was roughly 30-32 degrees celsius in most of February - do you think that is accurate?
    Also do you think it is still adequate in terms of wildlife sightings?

      Not a bad time. But it's sometimes rainy around then. Make sure you get a good tour company that uses Toyota Landcruiser tour vans. Many already do but you need to make sure just in case there is a possibility of rain.
      Either way, you will have an adventure of a lifetime. Come back here and tell us how it went.

      It's not a bad month but it will have rained in September and will still be a bit lush. You don't run a risk of getting stuck but the grass may still be tall.
      Go for it. I personally went for a safari a few weeks ago and it was raining... I saw a large number of animals.
      You need to make sure you get a good guide. He will be invaluable especially with spotting rare to find animals.

    • @EastAfricaTravelTips
      @EastAfricaTravelTips  Před rokem

      December is slightly rainy and it's just at the end of the short rains. this means that the grass will be tall and will make it difficult to spot a few of the big 5.
      You should still go if you're booked but try your best to find a very good tour guide. These will be invaluable especially during this season.

    • @EastAfricaTravelTips
      @EastAfricaTravelTips  Před 2 lety +2

      If you can't change the time to the July-September window, I would encourage you to still go. You will face more challenges finding the big cats because of the tall grass but there are many people who have been lucky and were able to see many of the animals they were hoping to see.

    Hey Anthony, planning a visit to Kenya in May. Do you think it's a good time for Safari?

    • @EastAfricaTravelTips
      @EastAfricaTravelTips  Před rokem +1

      There are great times to go on Safari, and the rest are ok times to go on Safari. You may not have as great an experience as when you green the best times but you will still have a great adventure. If May is when you're available do it.
      The thing about me is around that time is when Kenya's receiving a lot of rainfall and the tall grass may make it more difficult to spot some of the animals. However you will still see animals and still have an adventure but may not see all the big five. A good tour guide would help to make sure that you have a great time even if it's not a great season.

    Hi i m planning to go to serengati in 1 st week of June .i was just about to make a booking...but now I m in doubt. Is it a good time ?

    • @EastAfricaTravelTips
      @EastAfricaTravelTips  Před 2 lety

      June is usually cold and usually still green. This means that the animals will have lots of watering holes to drink from and may not congregate in a few hotspots where the action happens. The grass will also be tall so you may find it a bit difficult to find smaller wildlife like the big cats:
      With that said, there are a few advantages to coming during this season: The first is that you are likely to get a great price for your safari since there are fewer travelers at this time. The second is that there will be less crowding especially in popular places like the Mara.
      You will still see lots of animals and the experience will still be breathtaking but it will not be as optimum a time for a safari as the dry season of July, August and September. If June is the time that works for you, do it. You will definitely have an adventure.
