Unfortunately, just like "Turn To You" by The Go-Go's, "Rock Me Tonight" by Billy Squire, and "Black Cars" by Gino Vanelli, the video for "Dare Me" proved to be a career ending video for the Pointer Sisters with the Gender Bending trend in music videos.

The video was their 4th (after Jump (84), I'm So Excited (84) & Neutron Dance(85)) video placed in heavy rotation on MTV. They along with Donna Summer, Tina Turner and Sheila E were the black female artists that attained having their videos placed in heavy rotation in the early days of MTV. Donna was (first) the only one to have videos placed in heavy rotation in 1983 (Same year Jackson lead the men into heavy rotation). She set a precedent of having 3 videos consecutively place in heavy rotation. That wasn't surpassed until Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation.
Underrated? No, this chorus is still used as sample in many songs nowadays, like Junior Jack and Anton Powers feat Redondo. This song was not forgotten through decades, thank God!
My favorite song they ever did. Sadly, it started their commercial decline, peaking only at #11 when I thought it was going all the way to the top, or at least close to it. I so much miss what R&B was before it got computerized, and the Pointer Sisters never got their due respect. They had so much power, charisma, and enthusiasm that was just infectious. I’ve thought for many years about recording a hard rock version of this song.
Actually it peaked #6 on top 40 & was either #4 or #5 on Dance charts. It did reach #1 in Canada. Dare Me peaked at # 11 on poth pop and R&B and was their only #1 hit on dance chart. RCA began "dumping" their black artists @ '86. Evelyn Champagne King, the legendary Charley Pride, + The sisters had a final #1 hit with an artist from Belgium named Natalia. They remade "sisters are doing it for themselves" back in 2006. Reached the top on Belgium's top 50. There's a video and like concert on YT. They did 6 or 7 sold out performances in Belgium that year Check it out!!
The first bit of the video especially is very Michael Jackson-esque and I wonder how many people who werent familiar with the Sisters just assumed they were MJ clones and/or had jumped on the MJ bandwagon and didnt bother to listen/watch for long enough to realise that wasnt the case. Such things could easily cut sales by enough to turn what ought to be a hit into an also-ran. I like the idea of a hard rock version.
This song DIDN'T start their commercial decline because it was a huge hit, reaching number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This was their last major hit. The NEXT song released as a single would have started their commercial decline, not the one that was actually a hit.
That hook... God, I don't think there's a word in existence that expresses how f*ckin amazing that hook is. This has to be my favorite Pointer Sisters song, with the possible exception of the pinball jingle from Sesame Street.

Love that slappin' bass guitar. This song still sounds outstanding. So much soul, funk, melodies & magic. Love this still. This lifts my soul every single time I hear this jam. Thank you Pointer Sisters.
I grew up listening to these sexy, powerful women. Whenever I hear this song: store, post office, doing the dishes, paying the water bill... it's time to dance!
I just noticed a similarity with The Pointer Sisters and The BeeGees. They were both more successful as a trio, had several top hits, but they also had so much tradgedy in losing siblings fairly young. These women were such powerhouses in the 70s/80s. Love this song and Automatic in particular. But, they had so many great songs.
I miss them!! I remember in the 70s when they restyled the look of the 40s. They were awesome and unique! Nobody harmonized like they did. They belong in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!!
God bless June Pointer. Another top song from a really good album ("Contact" ?). I've got about eight of their albums and every one of them is just so consistently good. Like really good ! They must be the greatest ever girl group.
RIP Anita, June and Bonnie (and Pernell Whitaker), but man, I had a thing for June since childhood. Don't know what it was, but she pushed my buttons. Loved Ruth and Anita (and Bonnie), but that damn June, imperfect perfection!
The Pointer Sisters with their sexy soulful and sound looks said it all. Ruth, Anita and June Pointer beauties. Mark Breland must be enjoy himself with them and I envy him so much. RIP Bonnie and June Pointer

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love how they’re all in men’s suits, etc.
The room knew they were safe when they didn't walk in carrying violin cases.
This video came out 35 years ago !!! In 1985
39 now, alost 40.
such a great song. should have been at the top of the charts with the vocals and melody and rhythm.
It was
I just noticed a similarity with The Pointer Sisters and The BeeGees.
I can't believe I found this song after all of these years!
Tunisia Tucker i was also searching for years my nose. Now i found it!
me too!
1:28 ; )
In my mind this song was a huge smash... As a kid I was mad at the Billboard charts because they didn't show it as a winning number one!
=)
This song drills concrete... Unbelievable groove...
The best of the best. Rest in peace June, Bonnie, and Anita.
June at her best, and the way I like to remember her, especially, sadly on the anniversary of her passing...😥
I literally woke up with this in my head! had to look for it!
Me too!
June pointer you will be greatly missed.
A Music Video with a Sense of Humour
All these sisters are lead singers and shared the spotlight. Love how Aunt Ruth put some gospel vamp as the song closes
When music was nothing nothing but pure melody😩😩
Yep. Something sadly lacking in today's music.
@@coolcat6303 I like some of today's music so stfu.
Keep in mind it’s a big production house behind this music and it shows in the music itself how many people work on it
I need these three ladies to pump me up right now!
(June was a hottie and had quite the voice--RIP)
+Redfoot138 OMG !! did she pass away !?so sorry to hear that !! I've always felt pumped up by this song ! and prefer it to some of their more played tracks ENJOY the evening!! AND RIP to JUNE!!
