Hey Mixers, hope you have a great weekend! What’s your favorite episode of Band of Brothers and why?
My favorite part is not any particular episode but all the snippets of the actual Easy Company men...
Part 7. Spiers running through the German lines was insane.
Sadly, the last member of Easy Company, Bradford Freeman passed away a few weeks ago. They're all heroes.
For a change of pace, era, and "location", try the tv-mini-series entitled "Masada". It chronicles "the stand of 960 Hebrew men women and children against the 5000 men of the Roman 10th Legion" ad stars Peter O'Toole and Peter Strauss.
Tough to pick one, but if I were I'd say the "day of Days" 2nd episode...that one was crazy and the way they came together in a stressful situation.
The last surviving member of Easy Company passed away a few weeks ago. The company is whole once again.
RIP Bradford Freeman and the rest of Easy Company.

Heroes get remembered but legends never die.
The accompanying documentary “We Stand Alone Together” is well worth a watch to see how the bond of these heroes continued well after the war.

Major Richard "Dick" Winters lived long life from 1918 to 2011 to the age of 92. He did an acceptance speech for his men while they watched at nearby hotel. Acceptance speech was for Band of Brothers series when series won for Best Mini-series at 2002's Primetime Emmy Awards. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg had him do the speech. Everyone there gave Winters and his men standing ovation because they helped to defeat a madman!
7:20 Say what you will about the ethics of giving a man with a drinking problem the run of a liquor cellar, Winters’ giving Nixon the keys to Goering’s liquor collection was probably one of the best bro moves of the 20th century.
The last surviving member of the WW2 complement of Easy Company was Bradford C. Freeman (born 1924), who was a mortarman (I believe) and who attained the rank of Private, First Class. He died on July 3, 2022, at the age of 97. The second to the last surviving member, and the last surviving commissioned officer, was Edward Shames. (He was seen in Episode 4, telling the troops to “GET! MOVING!” in the midst of a crowd of celebrating Dutch, and again in Episode 7, when Winter said that he, Shames, had been watching too many war movies.) He was 99 when he passed away on December 3, 2021, and had attained the rank of Colonel. And with that, the entire WW2 complement of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, has passed into history.
Gentlemen, and all the other soldiers you represented - thank you. Thank you for your service. Thank you for sharing your stories with us.

PLEASE add one additional "final" episode. The year following the release of this series, HBO released a follow up program called "We Stand Alone Together- The Men of Easy Company" featuring longer interview segments as well as some additional footage. This is absolutely worthy of being a final wrap up to the series.
There's also a video made by Reel History called He Has Seen War. Talking to the families of Easy Company and the guys from The Pacific about how they adjusted after getting home.
All of these guys have since passed on. Glad they got to tell their stories first hand before they died.

It's one of those miniseries where you notice something new every time you watch it. It never gets old!
I watch it every year around Nov. I started when I got back from Afghanistan while I was in the hospital I watched an episode or 2 on the TV so once I was out I watched it with my buddy who passed from complications later so now I watch it every Nov which is when we watched it the 1st time. Also one thing I didn't realize is he said at the end "do you remember the letter Mike Ranney wrote me" SSG Ranney was the guy who talked the other NCOs into writing they wouldn't serve under Sobal.
The last "easy" man died July 3 2022. Now they can have a real reunion. One hell of a party I can tell you.
I've seen this series probably two dozen times and the final part with the real guys and Winter's final words...NEVER have my eyes been dry afterward. Never. It gets me every single time.
This was absolutely beautiful. Absolutely the "We Stand Alone Together" documentary is a must after you finish the series.

This isn't history. This is a dramatic retelling of historical events that is often fictionalized. For instance, in episode 9 "Why We Fight" Band of Brothers shows Easy Company liberating Kaufering IV (Hurlach) which in fact was actually liberated by the 12th Armored Division on April 27, 1945 with Easy Company actually arriving on April 28. And in episode 10, Band of Brothers shows Easy Company liberating Berchtesgaden and capturing the Eagle's Nest which is not historically accurate. The 3rd Infantry Division and the French 2nd Armored Division are credited by the U.S. Army and military historians with the liberation/capture of these places not Easy Company.

No it isn't. This is a fictionalized version of the liberation of Kaufering IV (Hurlach).

No they didn't. The Germans had evacuated all the Kaufering complex camps, including Kaufering IV (Hurlach), before the arrival of Allied troops and there were only about 6 prisoners found alive (those who had managed to hide) when the camp was liberated, along with about 500 bodies.
From the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:
_As US armed forces approached the Kaufering complex in late April 1945, the SS began evacuating the camps, sending the prisoners on death marches in the direction of Dachau. Those inmates who could not keep up were often shot or beaten to death by the guards. At Kaufering IV, the SS set fire to the barracks killing hundreds of prisoners who were too ill or weak to move._
_When the 12th Armored Division and 101st Airborne Division arrived at Kaufering IV on April 27 and 28, respectively, the soldiers discovered some 500 dead inmates. In the days that followed, the US Army units ordered the local townspeople to bury the dead._

@@Utonian21 Be careful of your opinion of replacements. More than half of E company were replacements at that point. Pvt Craver, the man that shot Grant, enlisted in '42, not long after the Toccoa men did.
I'm not defending him in any way of course, but be mindful of the way the show frames replacements. He could have replaced a man after D-Day

I remember when Major Winters passed away in 2011 it was heartbreaking. Just days prior to his 93rd birthday. You can go on CZcams and see the memorial service. RIP major Winters.

A biography has just been written of Ronald Speirs. The authors are Jared Frederick and Eric Dorr. The title is Fierce Valor.
The Eagle's Nest is now a museum, telling the history of Hitler's crimes in an effort to make sure nothing like that ever happens again. Also has a really nice cafe with a truly beautiful view.
Considering how few prisoners were actually at Spandau Prison, I like to think that Speirs took the job there just for the chance to stand outside the cell and poke Rudolf Hess with a stick.
I want to watch y'all do The Pacific. Both of my grandfathers served in that. One was in the Navy and went on to serve with the occupation force at Osaka and the other was an Army supply sergeant who served on Okinawa.

I've got to comment here. I'm halfway through my fifties right now and I loved your reactions to this series. As a kid I was in awe of WW2 veterans and luckily got a chance to talk to a few. You hear certain people, put down young folks, but you keep being the amazing people you can be. Show the world the side you've shown us here and I think the future is in good hands! Well done.
I too have to say, include one more episode about the interview the producers did with the actual veterans. It's so worth it!

Thank you so much for including the stories after they go home and all the name reveals of the veterans in the interviews. So many reactors skip or dont include them all and I feel like they are so important to see the real men behind the story and show.
Wow, that's been my pet peeve watching all of them. It's as if they aren't that significant. These guys deserve that honor, and even reactors that I love have skipped it and it's so disappointing. I mean, that actual soldiers _are _ the story here afterall.
Now!!! Y’all Gotta Jump into The Pacific. Just as good of a show regarding the the realism. Made by the same director, and producers. Def a solid watch. Give it a thought.
Not sure what you're talking about there. Like Band of Brothers, The Pacific features a different director assigned to each episode. There are more than a dozen directors between the two series.
Great reviews for Band of brothers. I've watched it several times. I'm from Ireland and have been to Normandy several times camping with my Family, Visited all Dday beaches, Utah, Omaha, Gold,Sword and Juno. Visited Brecourt Manor, Carentan, St Marie Eglise, Marie du Mont, St Lo, The Falaise pocket, bloody gulch, cemeteries and museums in France, I have been to WW1 Somme battlefield twice, and the battlefield of Waterloo in Belgium which was fought in June 1815. My grandfather was in the British Homeguard in London during the Blitz and worked on production line for Wellington bomber. He got married to a Kerry woman in London in 1940 and they returned home to Tipperary Ireland in 1952 with their 2 daughter, both born in London during the Bombing by the Germans, my Grandfather's brother was groundcrew RAF and his brother in law was a Dunkirk Veteran.

No matter how many times I have seen the ending I get so choked up. It’s sad because all of them have passed away now. I live right outside of south Philly. Bill Guarnere has a statute there.

My father served in medical unit behind the 506th into Austria/Germany. He helped treat and feed the concentration camp victims and suffered PTSD latter in life. He agreed that Austria was the most beautiful country he had ever seen! He was almost killed 3 days after the war ended by a German tank crew.
The pacific series
I have seen this series at least a dozen times at this point. The most recent time in 2020 I was watching with a friend. I was holding it together during the last interviews until Winters said
"Grandpa were you a hero in the war"
At which point I remember saying out loud "I can't do it." I buried my head in my sweatshirt and broke down crying.
It does not matter how many times I have seen his series, that final quote brings me to tears every single time. Such a fitting end to an incredible series about this incredible group of men.
I have seen this show so many times and it never gets old for a second.

I would also recommend checking out a book called "Conversations with Major Dick Winters." It is a phenomenal book about Major Winters after the way in his later years. Now THERE was a legit, no bullshit LEADER of men!
The Documentary to this, called ‘We Stand Alone Together’ is a must watch, it’s literally an hour long video easily accessible by just searching it up on youtube, completely for free and gives you so much more information about these men, shows 10x the amount of interviews shown in the show by all the easy company guys, real footage of the easy company guys and is just a necessity to watch, you won’t regret it!
As each year has passed, we are seeing fewer and fewer WWII Vets still around. Honestly it makes me sad to see them go, they truly were “The Greatest Generation.”
I've Watched Several Channels of People Reacting to Band of Brothers. And I always enjoyed Watching how Everyone Gets So emotionally Invested in these Old Soldiers. It's Heart warming to see people of all Sexes, ages , & Races shedding tears, Getting Angry. I E Lt. Dyke. But mostly the Delight at Seeing Each Aged Taccowa Man next to his name at the end of the Last Episode! But every Time I hear Winters talking about his Grandson, it Gets Me! 😭😂
Just binged all of your Band of Brothers reactions. Beautiful to see you guys go on this journey. One unintentional tradition I have is rewatching the series every June on D-Days anniversary. I know everyone’s been hyping up The Pacific, and I also know that there’s another series in the works called Masters of the Air. It will focus on the actions of the Eighth Air Force and is set as a precursor to Band of Brothers and The Pacific. We’ll keep our eyes open for it. Can’t wait to see what you guys do next

The Austrian scene were actually filmed in Switzerland. The red hotel in this episode is next to Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock and Moriarty had their infamous battle.
If you fly in to Salzberg, you can reach Hitler's Eagles Nest and Zell Am See (where they were told Japan surrendered) very easily. My first ever trip abroad from the UK was to both those places.
Was amazing to retrace their footsteps. The Eagles Nest is something else!
PLEASE watch the Pacific next...it will really shake you to your core!

I was stationed in Germany for 8 years got to go all over Europe and that is a beautiful place for sure.

I love this series, watched it 3 times. The pioneers of skydiving. There was a Brazilian lieutenant who trained with Easy Company. He wanted to go along with the jump on D-Day, but they wouldn't let him. He returned to Brazil and became the patron of Brazilian skydiving. Today Brazil is among the 5 best Paratroopers in the World. I loved the video. Greetings from Brazil.
I remember the week before graduating Army Basic Combat Training we had a Sunday off and one of the Drills had a copy of Band of Brothers that they allowed us to play in the classroom. We knocked out the entire season. I had seen the show in full multiple times before joining the Army but always has a more important meaning to me now, especially in that moment surrounded by guys that signed the same contract with me. The bond that we have is something special that so few will ever understand. I hope to continue having that bond with the guys that are still with me for as long as I live.
You should watch Ron Livingston's diary of training camp for the cast of BoB. Basically a VLOG before they were a thing and showed what it was like to get everyone ready and in character. Its on youtube

My favourite episode is probably episode 3. I'm not sure why, but I just really enjoy it, and it always makes me cry.

3 is great. I think Episode 7 The Breaking Point is my favorite episode only because of the beginning with Malarkey. The way he talks about the memories coming back to him later in life literally makes me cry every time I see it no matter how many times I watch it.

They have put up a statue for Major Winters in France, where Easy-company made their landings on D-day. Shows just how respected Dick Winters was as a soldier and a officer.
A beautifully heartbreaking series that shows the hardship of war, the evil of humanity and the ability of those that come together to stop injustices to free the oppressed. We still have a long way to go even these days but maybe one day we can all find a life of peace free of hate.

A lot of us who grew up in the second half of the 20th century got to interact with men like this. Older guys who were genuine heroes who did completely incredible acts were just the people in the neighborhood.

This story will never get old. So much history and greatness. These men will never see their equal again.
HOF doesn’t mean house. Haus means house. That building was a hotel.
Also, Berchtesgaden is not in Austria; it’s in Bavaria which is southern Germany.
From there Easy Co went to Austria which is to the southeast of Germany.
The BEST line of the entire series is when Winters says to Sobel: "You salute the rank, not the man."!

As an FYI: this episode was not actually filmed in Austria. The production tried to film in Sell Am See, Austria (where the actual events took place), but they couldn't find suitable locations there that still looked authentic enough all those years later. So they looked elsewhere. They found it in the Interlaken region of Switzerland. The lake Winters is seen swimming in is Lake Brienz, and the hotel where they're headquartered is there too. If you ever get a chance to go there, do it. I went there a few years ago, and even though I had visited the Alps on several occasions before, I was still stunned by the spectacular beauty of this particular region. What you see in the show doesn't even do it justice.
"Schindler's List" - A hard watch, but a must see.
The next series this team produced was The Pacific which is based on combat memoirs. It is a more brutal war. The third part, Masters of The Air, has been completed and may be shown before the end of the year. It is about the bomber crews out of England who had the greatest casualties.
Great reaction, My father fought in world war II in Italy, France and Germany and fought in the Battle of the bulge. He never talked about world war II until the last two years of his life. He told me about being shelled in the woods and how him and his buddies uniforms were were ripped from bullets and never got hit. He said they were very lucky to make it out of that. He would always talk about but not wanting to make friends because it was so hard losing them. He passed in 2003. I wish he could have seen this series. I'm sure it wouldn't have been easy but he would have loved it. Now you have to finish the last one ( We stand alone together) it might be my favorite. It has longer interviews with the real guys and actual footage from world war II. It's amazing. Thank you for doing this reaction.
The Eagle's Nest is now a restaurant and beer garden today and can be visited in season.
A lot of Nazi stuff came back after the war. I saw Lugers, dead hand gernades, spoons. My neighbor had a Thompson submachine gun.... Dont know if it was still operational, but he had it. Nice people. Man and wife and children and grandchildren. I cut their grass and they were very kind. 1960s.
Another fact about the replacement from Idle Company who shot Chuck Grant. His name was Floyd Craver, he received a dishonourable discharge and a life sentence for the murders of Hauptmann Edward Altacher of the Wehrmacht and Major R.G. Watkin of British Intelligence, along with the attempted murder of Staff Sergeant Grant and one count of desertion (he attempted to escape incarceration and was captured by French civilian police). The latter sentence was rescinded, but his discharge remained. He died in the July of '87, after colliding into a truck on his motorcycle... under the influence of alcohol I might add.

The last surviving member of Easy Company, Bradford Freeman, died earlier this month. The rest, including all the ones speaking in this video, are all gone. To borrow from the German general, may they all enjoy everlasting lives in peace.

As a combat vet myself I think now when I walk past an old person we naver know what they have been throiugh in life. They deserve all the respect I can give them
It's strange to think that when this was made David Schwimmer (Soebel) and Ron Livingston (Nixon) were probably the "biggest" names in the series. Several others were up and coming, like Damian Lewis, but most were relatively unknown at the time.
This series ended up launching a number of careers. Actors like Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbenser went on to become hugely successful, Damian Lewis did well and Michael Cudlitz (Bull Randleman), Neal McDonough (Buck Compton), Scott Grimes (Malarkey) and Frank John Hughes (Guarnere) had several big roles in major movies and TV series afterwards.
i miss my heroes. every last one of them. got to meet alot of them when i was kid at air shows and reunions, i was so naïve about what they went through. breaks my heart as ive gotten older and realize the severity of everything they experienced

Not to take away their story but the experience of E.Co. was repeated thousands of times during WW2 in Europe and the Pacific. E. Co. 506 was just lucky Stephen Ambrose picked up their story and wrote a book about them. There were literally thousands of Winters, Nixons, Malarkeys and Guarnere during the war. Unfortunately there were thousands of Sobels and Norman Dykes too
5:27 Lt Harry Welsh got bust from NCo to Pvt bescause he was alwys in a fight while in training. and then the unit he was in sent him to a Officers Cadet school. He graduate and becme an officer. And then he was assigned to the 506th , 2nd Bat., E company. He was a damn badass
