    What a fantastic video Stu! It takes time and consideration to make this with various cameras and editing. This will help loads of us amateurs and I want to say thanks

    Your bricks are of very high quality, all edges are straight, which is very good. In our region you sometimes find crooked bricks, the equipment may be old, and the bricks sometimes have uneven edges and poor hyometry.

      These look and sound like engineering bricks. They pretty my much always have nice sharp and square arris here in the UK. When it comes to facing bricks the quality can vary a lot. Sometimes intentionally as well though.

    Stu , great to see you again . I watched this video for about 4 minutes .A couple of points . When you level on face brickwork you level on the front edge of the brick . Also You never level across a brick , the plumb face is more important. I know this is super knit picking , but I hope you see where I am coming from . Best wishes

    • @Mac_F87
      @Mac_F87 Před rokem

      Plumb the face is how I was taught but with bricks like this I guess it’s less important. They look pretty square, so plumb should be close even levelling across the top.

    Stu, Great vids. Keep up the great work. Can I ask a question please. We recently moved to a house built in the 80s. The brickwork is brownish, not Cotswold. I need to try and match the mortar to make some repairs etc. The current mortar is not your normal builders mix with red sand. I think it may be washed builders sand? What would you suggest to try and match the original colour to blend in new brickwork. Thanks in advance.

    Do all bricklayers bang their spirit level to keep the brick in place if yes will it have a effect on the level later on in life? .

  • @anthonyjensen8792
    @anthonyjensen8792 Před rokem

    Always interesting to watch Stu, what is the training cement mix made of or is it normal sand and cement just weaker.

    • @lukeoreilly960
      @lukeoreilly960 Před rokem

      Its motar 4 shovel sand to 1 cement is the ratio wet up till good also plasticer in it makes it workable

    • @Mac_F87
      @Mac_F87 Před rokem

      Training mortar we used to use was sand and lime mortar. That way it could be used again and again. The guys would just stick in and a roller mill/mixer and add more water to make up the new muck.

    Went on a quick search for those types of bricks - with one side cut - on the assumption its for keying or bonding and sure enough, a few references say ‘keyed’ .. but putting that into Travis Perkins doesn’t get me far. Do these bricks have other names to brickies?

    Many years ago when i was about 12 my dad had a wall built and the brick layer who did it always used the soak the bricks in water. has that changed now due to improved brick manufacture? they look a bit porous now than they used to be.

      If I'm in a Med country in the summer on a hot day e.g Greece (40 Deg) then i'll give the bricks a quick dip in water. It's what the locals seem to do.

    Wrong!
    Your wall is not engaged to the pier, just mortared up against it.
    And why haven't you used some sort of structual bond between the two wythes?
    You've made a double-skin cavity garden wall? Whats the point?
