Autism is growing so fast in America not because there are more autistic people than before, but because doctors now consider many more symptoms in their diagnosis for autism.

@marianne mccrank When it comes to high-functioning autism, it depends. It can certainly affect social skills, whether it be talking too much about specific subjects, difficulty reading social cues, or having a hard time getting metaphors or sarcasm. I'm somewhere between high and mid functioning and I know that my life would certainly be a lot different if I wasn't on the spectrum. My IQ is around average, but I not only stim A LOT, but I do have a tendency to hit myself sometimes when I'm angry and while I'm usually a nice person, I have difficulty being emotionally mature, often getting down on myself for things that really aren't that big a deal. On the flip side, I have very extensive knowledge on my interests which actually has come in handy before and being autistic has contributed to my imagination which I like to channel when writing short stories, especially surreal and lovecraftian stories. No matter where you fall on the spectrum, autism has it's ups and downs, though some definitely have it worse than others. I suppose whether or not high-functioning can be considered disabled really depends on perspective.

And yet I'm autistic and I got 29/36 on the ACT with a writing score of 10/12, I graduated this year at the age of 17, and I move into college this Thursday. On top of it, I have a friend in my grade on the spectrum who took enough college classes to be the first one to graduate from our high school with an Associates Degree. My grandson has autism
For some reason with me he can play up a little.
I talk to him. Take his mind off the reason he is starting to get angry
    Kids with autism get angry.
    They need more input
I no he can remember any place he has been
    He loves music
If you have an autistic kid
    Watch what makes them shine
    Music maps drawing maths
They will be the top of the class
I wish teachers in schools would instead of thinking they are the pain in the class
Also stop sending them to special schools

    • @JalnorTheGreat
      @JalnorTheGreat Před 4 lety

If an autistic child is getting angry in situations a neurotypical child wouldn't, it's most likely an external factor. Either something is happening that is causing the autistic child stress/frustration (such as a lot of background noise, or a noise is too loud) or the child is taking too literal an interpretation on something that a neurotypical child would see as not meant to cause offence. Taking his mind off it is good, but it's also worth asking when he's calm if he can explain what upset him so you can prevent it from happening again. Make it clear that you don't know what did it and you need his help to understand :-)

    I have Autism.
Got diagnosed at the age of 7, had special education untill the age of 16. Now I'm back at a 'normal' school, and most people don't even notice I have Autism.
And I'm not anti-social at all, in fact, I'm very social. Wanting to meet all kinds of people, wanting to help them and be curious and kind to them.
I lose myself in my passions and get bored very fast if I do something that I do not like. I'm a creative thinker and most people say that I have to publish those ideas.
I want to become a Creative Director and that's what I'm working for, achieving my dream.
And by the way, the kindest and most passionate people I know...they have Autism. So really, if you are a shithead...and using Autism as an insult...watch out for those people, because you will eventually meet them as your boss. With developed social skills and all.
And I think it is a mutation.

The true definition of Autism is having communication and speech problems; repetitive behaviors and sensitivity may follow, it doesn't effect your IQ. But you're kinda right with the Asperger's syndrome, though, but the others on the spectrum have their own unique type of intelligence.

+Gabriel Mendez You must be new. The internet has been this way since the beginning. If you're so easily "triggered" or "offended" that other people have the right to have their own opinions, no matter how "fucked up" you may think it is, then you might just want to stay off the internet altogether. The thing about freedom of speech is that it goes both ways. People are free to think and say what they want to. If you don't like it, then the internet is not a place you should be. And instead of feeding the "trolls" like you did, you may just want to ignore it so they don't have more fuel to add to their fire. Most people that post hateful comments want a reaction like yours and so many other of the comments on this video. When they know they get under your skin, they win. Just a little advice.

i cried at this. I am 16 years old, & I've been diagnosed with Autism since I was 3. I also have PDD (Pervasive Development Disorder), concurrent ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) & probable comorbid speech & language processing disorder, which has an impact on learning. I frequently exhibit symptoms of inattention & distractibility. Finally, I also suffer from anxiety, which is worse because I'm a teenager. I lack social skills, despite that I do have some friends, & I often hide myself in my room doing either CZcams, Twitter (@TeresaKinsley), or drawing & creative writing. It's not too affective because of my high-ish IQ, & I honestly don't know what my IQ is. Growing up, I always wanted to work with the arts & film, being well-known by many instead of just my family & some friends at school. Of course I decided to go to college, & I choose not to do drugs/alcohol &/or sex, despite all girls my age probably do.
What did inspire me the most in this video was 4, the horseback riding fact. When I was little, I used to go horseback riding (the horse's name is CJ), & boy do I love it. Now that I've seen this, it makes me think of going horseback riding again; you know, something fun to do instead of playing Xbox all day.
I know that I should "keep trying" & "not take no shit from nobody," but I wanna do more than that. I want people to know me more. I want to join the nerds in Comic-Con, I wanna be known as the Hiddlestoner (fangirl of British actor Tom Hiddleston) of the school's stage crew, I wanna help others who are diagnosed with autism, & I wanna spread my creative ideas to the world & make Hollywood smart again (jk). Most of all, I want people all to know who I am: what I've suffered, & what I loved & cry about. Technically, I need attention, but at least a million people to say that they care about me & not make autism overlooked.
    -T

According to some research, Autism is caused by too many connections in the brain and abnormally reduced ability of the brain to destroy brain connections...Electrical impulses just lose themselves in the many paths and that leads to various problems such as the inability to stay focused. An overconnected brain can also lead to 'extraordinary gifts'...It is also interesting that Creative people have more than average brain connections, but only in the region between the left and right side of the brain.

But you just might really might be Bi Polar. I'm saying this because I didnt walk in the doctor and be like No your wrong I have Autism! I accepted what they gave me because I didn't want to have this disability to begin with. Bi-Polar sydrome and Autism are no where near the same. And people saying this in the comments are no help to our community. Being diagnosed with Autism is NOT something you can self diagnose yourself as! This cause more confusion! If you a doctor told you that you have back pains you don't say "no I have cancer because my mom say xxxx. You only said that because I'm a woman right!?!?!?!" If you do have Autism spectrum disorder then I'm sorry that happened to you but please do not say women don't have Autism because this could really hurt other people's understanding of Autism and we do not need people self diagnosing themselves because this hurt the studies.

It's funny when people with a lot of ignorance express the idea that Autistic individuals such as my father, are retarded and yet my father has been a surgeon for 22 years and to this day, has saved lives...
.....He has become a great father, both disciplinary and intellectually.
And he also went to College for the full extent of 9 years, whilst raising my older brother and I, as well as our mother. All while studying to become the very thing he has dreamt of wanting to achieve.
He had it all at the age of 28, and for the past 22 years, he has always put the responsibility of raising my brother and myself, and is the most impeccable inspiration I can think of. Every time.
So, no matter what the results may be, considering the amount of insults that portray Autistic people, My father will always be above any of you haters and YOU haters know it and have to accept it, because it's illogical and ridiculous to think otherwise, considering the successful position he is in, and behind the computer screens where you are. :)
Disclaimer: Any insults and counter arguments are welcome, because your insults and counter arguments don't matter. :)

I was diagnosed even before I can remember, my entire life was filled with doctors, therapists, medication, and even schools.. trying to help me with my anger outbursts, my problem with socializing.. I was kicked out of school in 7th grade and went to 3 different day treatment schools. I finally made it back into school in 10th grade. I graduated with honors of may 2017 with the help of special ed. but even to this day I have trouble with socializing. constantly trying to figure out appropriet conversation, when to say it, how to say it.. so many times people have told me that what I said was innapropriet ,and I cant understand why. ppl ask me why I cant "just calm down" ,and they don't understand but I cant figure out our understand how they can have such control. ..I don't understand at all, and I don't like it ...it just goes over and over again into my head .contstantly

I hope for a day when people stop seeing whats different about me and start seeing where i am the same or even special in a good way. For example im 36 now i have only one child by blood but after my ex died i learned she had a daughter who her dad rejected and wont even buy her bday or christmas gifts. I felt this was wrong three years ago and i always follow how i feel about things. So i started buying her bday and christmas gifts like i do with my son from my disability income. If i can afford to after bills and rent. Some of us autistic people are very warm and caring individuals unlike how tv shows us off.

This sheds a sort of positive light on autism. Props to you guys. Having type one, the type with little to no effect on you, autism, I'm still afraid to tell people I have aspergers because I'm scared they'll treat me differently. People like that DO exist. The type that treat autistics as "freaks" with no maturity. It makes me sad to know this, and I remember crying myself to sleep thinking," Why can't I just be normal? Why do I feel like a freak? Why do people treat me like this for reasons not in my control?" You don't ask to be autistic. It's just something that's there. Thank you for letting others know that autism is not a disability, it's another state of mind. 😌 You guys are wonderful people!

Autistic people tend to focus their attention to one a couple of subjects and excel in them rather than having a pretty moderate skills in a lot of subjects.

  • @autisticsagainstcuringauti1158

A few aspects of this video need to be corrected:
    1. The whole idea that Autism rates are increasing is ridiculous. The perceived increase is due to a change in diagnostic standards, not a change in the actual ratio of Autistic people to non-Autistic people.
    2. Framing Autistic traits in terms of "severity" or "functioning levels" is both useless and ableist. No one is "mildly Autistic" or "severely Autistic," you either are Autistic or you aren't.
    3. Not all Autistics think in pictures. While some of us do think in pictures more than words others of us think in words and struggle to form mental pictures. There is a whole range of ways in which different Autistic people can think.
    4. The most likely cause of Autism is genetics. No one has proved that any sort of environmental factors can cause Autism, leaving genetics as the most likely candidate for what really causes Autism.
    5. Autism is no more costly than any other neurotype. The reason Autism is viewed as such a costly disability is because parents feel the need to "fix" their Autistic children and thus seek out expensive "therapies" such as ABA which are often abusive and unhelpful. If society was set up to accommodate the needs of Autistic people then the costs associated with Autism would drop drastically.

High Support means you need quite a bit of help with a task.
Mid Support means you may need some help with a task, but not as much.
and Low Support means you can usually do this task on your own or with very little help.

@@ladielydkyd1281 my son with severe ASD diagnosed as the 1 percent in need of most care cannot survive on his own for one half hour while me and my level 1 son both of us are on level one we can get on without significant support although it is needed it is nowhere close to his (elder who cannot eat no physical reason just cannot figure out the steps in order or focus drink water change himself collapses runs into oncoming traffic etc). Thus the levels help discern and he gets the extra support he would very literally die without and the distinguishing level allows him access to those extremely expensive services without which he would not even theoretically but definitely be dead or hospitalized. On Twitter I tried to explain it to other ASD ppl who can you know read write and know how to order their thoughts well enough to structure sentence s and they were so ignorany some literally said well my parents taught me that means u are not doing enough. That's how ignorant even ASD community is about severe and extremely disabling autism let alone the rest of the world. I could film his life to make u believe me but somehow I think it would be both dangerous and a breach of his privacy and would still be meaningless to those who don't care to understand

listen peeps who read this. I got ASD, I am a firm believer that people without ASD don't really get it. that's what I believe. But when I started my freshman year of high school(year 2016- 17 yay) I met a couple others with it and we became buddies. one thing about starting your freshman year with ASD is that you aren't going to be the only one. I myself was surprised to find others with it and before starting high school I always felt like I was a "ghost in the crowd" of everyone in middle school and outside of school. And nobody was aware of ASD, I actually never told anyone about it until just a couple weeks ago, and I was surprised to see people didn't know crap about it. And people I went to school with didn't care. But that doesn't stop me at all. I am use to being alone and away from people, I'm fact I like to be alone than with family most the time. But I never have up with everyone, I actually don't try to make friends other than the 4 others with ASD. they feel the same about everything. But for those who like to call people with autism stupid, ugly, etc just know that people with ASD have a mutual bond(at least my group.) And will swarm you and beat you into a pulp. fellow people with ASD or any other form of autism or my bros and sisters so I can take a punch for one of em. also if your an autism hater from behind a screen ill just say this: the only thing you can do is caps lock someone to death(Not that it works you dumbfucks). But this is all my opinion and beliefs and crap like that. If your an aspie ( I like to say "socially awkward" because I don't like saying "Oh i got autism" idk it's just me but share me your view as well. So with that said see ya
