The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated feature produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name. Distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, the film was originally released to theaters on November 17, 1989 and is the twenty-eighth film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. During its initial release, The Little Mermaid grossed over $84 million in the United States and an additional $99 million internationally.[3]
The film is given credit for breathing life back into the animated feature film genre after a string of critical or commercial failures that dated back to the early 1980s. It also marked the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance.
A stage adaptation of the film with a book by Doug Wright[4] and additional songs by Alan Menken and new lyricist Glenn Slater opened in Denver in July 2007 and began performances on Broadway.[5]

After watching The Little Mermaid's 2023 trailer, I came back to appreciate the original animated film.
The most beautiful part to me is at 1:44. Just something about the instruments and Ariel's singing matches so well. Gives me a feeling of hope in a already amazing world that only gets better.
The emotion emanating from just the voice alone is so deeply moving. Perfect work from the wonderful Jodi Benson.

Despite the numerous other gorgeous Disney songs, especially from the renaissance period, for some reason this songs just works so well. Maybe cause it was a symbol of Disney rising from its grave. Maybe cause it's longer than others. But for whatever reason, there is something very emotional about this song, that you just can't find in Disney today.

Jodie's voice is beautiful, sure halle's is as well, but this version is unbeatable. Jodie manage to gave joy and naturality on her performance, halle sounds more theatrical like if we were in a Broadway presentation
True. For me, Jodi sounds more natural like she's talking melodically, whereas Halle somehow sounds forced like she's trying too hard in certain parts of the new version, especially the beginning of the second verse.
Jodie has real but effortless purity and power to her voice. She also sounds like she's having a conversation with herself rather than trying to win American Idol. Haile is like a popstar trying to be a diva, which isn't right for this song. This is also when Disney spent money or orchestration and music production.

This song has a different meaning for me,I have alot of breathing issues due to lung disease. "What would I give if I could live out of these waters?" The limits of not being able to be as active as every one else. Wish I could be part of that world....
I know your comment is 3 years old, but I just had to say that I was born with a heart defect, had open heart surgery just shy of my 5th birthday, lived a reasonably normal life until November '12. I watched the presidential election results on a small TV in the ER waiting room because my husband rushed me in after I started coughing up literal cups full of bright red blood. Two weeks in the hospital and I'm finally diagnosed with stage 4 right side heart failure and a restrictive lung disease (pulmonary arterial hypertension) caused by my heart issues. I've been on oxygen ever since and have very little energy. I just turned 33 last week and I feel like I'm 93 instead. I can't have children because there's a 60% chance myself and the baby would die if I tried to carry to term. One of the meds I'm on for my lung disease requires me to pee in a cup every month at the doctor's office to ensure I'm not pregnant because the meds cause such terrible birth defects, before the specialty pharmacy will even mail them to me. All that to say that you're not alone. I understand exactly where you're coming from. If you ever wanna chat, just shoot me a message.

I can relate to this song in a profound way. I've always been extremely shy and scared of people from an early age. As a result of that I've lived a very sheltered and boring life and missed out on all the normal experiences of teenage and young adult years. I wish I could have friends and go out with them, go to parties, have fun, have crazy memorable experiences, travel the world, meet and interact with new people, etc. But I can't because of my irrational fears.

It’s more than just Disney it has a good message. The intro part of the song was the one in my head, “ I wannabe where the people are singing and dancing” but the part of “what do you call those things feet”.

I most definitely misinterpreted the lyrics in one of the verses. I never knew the words "What's a fire, and why does it - what's the word - burn?" were sung. I always thought of the lyrics as saying "What's a tiger, and why does it - what's the word" - grrr?" I most definitely didn't hear the song clearly, but then again, who would when you're chasing around a very loud, noise-making ten-month-old, and I'm referring to when I babysit my nephew. I play all three CD volumes of Disney's Greatest for him.

I think it means that the girl who is the most popular or whose parents have the most money still have problems of their own and sometimes just want to be normal and not have so many standards because of their popularity and wealth.
