- Well this video has it all. My crazy dog almost ruins my shot, i'm alone in the woods at night and the dawn chorus does its thing. Along with all that, I get some lovely images with a Canon M50 crop sensor camera and just the one lens. What more could you ask for?

Saw the stick, then the blackout! Knew Willow had done it! Having just had one like her for a weekend, we now have permanent scratch marks on a door. Still, they are good companions. Glad that lovely shot wasn’t ruined! And how beautiful is that dawn chorus! Thank you for taking us there, Simon🇦🇺

I’m lucky enough to have a Nightingale in my local woods , there is nothing better in my opinion than being in a woodland in the early morning listening to the birdsong in the Springtime! It gives me a sense of well-being! Love the Wren story Simon, they are wonderful little characters for sure!
I have heard a nightingale, but only once. They’re just don’t occur in my part of the country.

It’s a lot of fun being in the woods at that time of day when you have it all to yourself, it’s quite an experience.

Bird song recording, I am going to have a go at that, it was an interesting exercise to get in touch with nature. as always the images are well thought about.

Hey Simon, Willow is an adorable pup! The bird song was lovely. I’m not able to identify particular birds by their song, but early mornings out in the forest are magical.
Your final image is quite nice. It’s a good reminder to think vertically sometimes.
I have used my M50ii, which I also use as my video camera, as a stills camera on occasion when the 16mm lens is needed.

Nice images! I would not have expected F16 and F18 on the M50 to be so sharp. Great compositions. I especially liked the last one. You certainly passed the inexpensive-camera challenge ;-)

Really enjoyed that Simon, and good to see what a professional can do with an M50 as it's the camera I have - I really enjoy using it, but it is a shame it's not weather proof. Really enjoyed the dawn chorus and you identifying the birds, something I've never been able to learn.Favourite photo was the wild garlic flowers 🙂Keith
Thank you, Keith. Yes, the bird song is really nice and it’s especially good when you know them but it does take some getting used to. There are apps available now to help you identify these.
Awww, Willow is adorable! And love bird songs early in the morning. One of the great perks of getting up and out before sunrise.

Thanks Trevor. I don’t photograph birds anymore. Whilst I still love all aspects of nature, the desire to photograph birds left me in favour of more considered photography.
You can literally see the enthusiasm in your face as your explaining your plans whilst driving. That's one thing I've always loved about your channel, the genuine passion and absolute fountain of knowledge about your surroundings and all the life it supports, be it flora or fauna. Keep up the good work, Simon. 😊👍

Great video as always, loved the bird song, I have to use the Merlin app to identify the birds not having the depth of knowledge as yourself.

we're lucky enough to have a small patch of woodland nearly on our doorstep. we get mainly nuthatches there but also tits of all varieties, sparrows, chaffinches, woodpeckers, jays, the odd tree creeper, and the usual blackbirds and corvids. there is also a goshawk living there which we've been lucky enough to see but not as yet photograph. a red kite and buzzards also hunt nearby. we're spoiled really!
I’ve never actually seen a goshawk.

I had to go back and rewatch that to see what it was that you had seen. It’s actually the cleft of two Hillside where a river runs down the middle so I suspect it’s just a natural gorge. Thanks for watching.

I used to have an M5 (not M50), and that same 50-200mm lens as well.
Not a bad lens at all for its size and price!

Hi Simon. The M50 is a remarkable camera. It is a shame that Canon no longer supports it. There is also a 28mm macro lens that contains a built in light should that be needed. Good used ones can be found at the usual places. Those of us "getting on" sometimes may need a light-weight camera. While the pictures a wonderful, the APSC sensor size does not support the jaw-dropping detail that a medium format camera can provide IMHO. I recently traded in al of my 5D4 kit and lenses for an X1DII. The difference in weight was very surprising. Although it does look lonely in its 18 liter bag. Very nice tryptic to conclude. The vertical wild garlic scene is extraordinary.

Was trying t work out where you was parked up in the Beacons, was you at Blaen y Glyn? It's a pity you don't spend any longer down this way. Great episode as ever and prove that its whats behind the lens at times not what is making the image (camera wise) Fabulous selection. Loved the bird song, a few days ago I opened my back door to something akin, maybe not as loud an as intense but pleasurable none the less.

What race was your partner doing? I have been to the tea rooms with the wife when out for a drive.

Simon, have you ever worked with film (you probably did as a kid like me, similar ages we are). Given the right film stock, an old medium format Hassy or Pentax, with the right lens, these type of images would be stunning...or even more stunning !
I worked with a range of transparency films, mostly Kodachrome then Fuji Provia and Velvia. I'm sure you are right but the ongoing cost of emulsion and processing puts me off.
Yeah I hear you regards the cost, I made the full time switch to film recently. It is costly depending on how trigger happy you are. I’ve started self scanning and am trying to gather the courage to develop myself, it reduces the costs greatly and all adds to the experience and even the self scanning is greatly rewarding. I know you will have a schedule to a degree and something going ‘pete tong’ in any of the stages of making the image would be a wee bit of an issue!

I’m interested in your thoughts Simon, on the ease of use of the apsc camera and the quality you get and if you notice enough of a difference to justify the big camera. I’m currently back and forth between my GFX 50S2 and my micro 4/3 Lumix G9. On paper 12 bit vs 14 bit 50 MP vs 20 MP, massively bigger sensor wider dynamic range etc, but in real life especially printing vs pixel peeping on a screen, I have to say the ease of use and light weight of the G9/lens combo especially when I rarely need a tripod , make me think twice to pick up the GFX. The scenarios when I can’t find a work around with the G9 to give qualitatively similar results are few and far between. I know you are big on exceptional quality so am interested in your thoughts on your experience 👍😀
Part of the reason why I use the camera that I do is for the way feels and not necessarily the results all the time. The results are without doubt beautiful from the big Pentax but it’s the way feels when I work with it that makes all the difference over a small, full frame or cropped sensor camera. I also like shallow depth the field that you get when using a medium format camera at similar apertures. Some find that a restriction but I really quite like it. I miss the focal range of full frame but it’s a compromise that I’m prepared to put up with. Interestingly, the new system that I’m looking at for the future is still full frame. Albeit smaller, however, it still feels special to work with, but I’m not giving it away yet as to which camera that will be.
