    It does work well indeed. But the issue with negative film is, that it actually in itself doesn’t « look like » anything, as you said it will vary depending on scanner and operator (for the digital sides of things) because negative film is ALWAYS an interpretation, there is no truth, there is no reference for what it should look like because in the darkroom, where it all started 😅 first of, the color balance is adjusted manually and to taste, there is no absolute right, there is no neutral settings, plus, and this is something I feel that people often forget. Negative film was meant to be printed, and depending on what paper you used to print, the results would vary a LOT. So the negative is always a starting point, never the result. Gold doesn’t have one look, it has the look of Gold on a Frontier, or on a Pakon, or printed in Crystal Archive Glossy, or on Maxima Matte… and they are all very different !

      For sure! Thanks for articulating that. These settings are meant to be a universally pleasing look emulating the scans I’ve gotten from great labs like State Film and Gelatin.

      And that’s why back in the day one shot slide film! Interpretation baked in. 😀

      Indeed that is true.. That's why for example RNI Film profiles for Lightroom has like 7 version for each popular film stock. Cause results vary a lot. Even slight exposure shift can cause some colours to pop more or be muted, etc. I had this stupid mentality years ago "does Kodak Gold supposed to look like this? Maybe greens are too warm" Who cares... as long as the photo is nicely shot, balanced afterwards that's all that matters.

    Your settings saved the whole roll of my Kodak!!! Thank you and now it's officially my basic settings before tweaking. A BIG thanks Dave!

    I definitely had to do some adjustments to really land where I wanted to with my images, but man, this video definitely got super close to that finish line. Thanks so much for sharing!

    My god. What a HUGE difference those settings make! I had a few rolls that were converting fine and some that were all over the place, your settings definitely helped some of the problematic ones look more "normal". Thank you. Subscribing.

    Just gave this a shot, and mannnn. Thank you. I feel like I’ve gotten better over the past couple years in NLP but struggle with consistency. I appreciate you sharing this video.

    Roll Analysis has helped pick up some of the slack a ton imo too! v3+ is absolutely worth the upgrade!! Thanks for sharing your process :) Always love seeing what others are doing.

      I haven’t used it yet. I upgraded to V3 when it launched but haven’t tried roll analysis. I need to though!

    I use the same lens for scanning but with the leica sl3. Works like a charm.
    I am going to greece this summer but contemplating on what gear to bring.
    Maybe just the sl3 and some m-lenses or the sl24-90. Choices.

    This is a godsend! thank you. Just one question, do you over expose while scanning the negative? And if so by how much according to the internal light meter? Might help me get to the same starting point since I use the same lens and camera. Great video!

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Glad it helped! When I scan, I’m using:
      - Aperture priority
      - Exposure @ 0
      - f/8
      - 2 second timer
      - ISO100 (my cameras base)

    Thank you Dave! I’ve been struggling with these things, especially that crunchy and saturated look that NLP seems to produce by default. Definitely gonna try your tips!
    Do you mind sharing if you expose your negatives in a certain way when “scanning”? Just auto or expose to the right or something?
    And what color temperature is your light source?

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I use Negative Supply for my light and I’m not 100% what color the source is, but I just use AWB and set it in post using the dropper in LR. Regarding my scanning, I use Aperture priority, f/8, and ISO100 on the A7RIII. If it was a really important scan, I’d use the A7RV, same settings. Typically the shutter is 1/5 or so, and I use a 2-second delay.
