  • Check out Ben's Chessable courses here! www.chessable.... In the Bogo-Indian Defense, named for GM Efim Bogoljubow, Black develops the kingside quickly. As with most hypermodern openings, the "Bogo" (as it is known informally) seeks to fight for central squares with pieces before occupying them with pawns.
    Games:
01:51 Magnus Carlsen vs. Arkadij Naiditsch, Grenke Rapid 2015
11:37 Wesley So vs. Magnus Carlsen, Pro Chess League 2017
19:13 Alexander Khalifman vs. Viswanathan Anand, FIDE KO World Champ, 1997
28:08 Garry Kasparov vs. Henry Urday, Lima Simul 1993

"The bogo-indian-defense is good for the better player."
Well that's exactly why people play the London opening. If you can call them people.

Nice Kasparov game. Usually you see him smash with sharp prep but here he simply outplays a guy seemingly effortlessly in a queen endgame and didnt even have to try hard against the king.

Thanks for that. i've been trying the Bogo for only a little while now as i've been using Christof Selecki's book as i wanted to learn the Nimzo, and he gives the Bogo as the alternative if White avoids the Nimzo. I've actually had pretty good results even though i am still getting a feel for it and make positional mistakes here and there. anyway this video helps clarify some things that are a bit tough to decipher in the book. cheers!

18:26 I'm VERY surprised I understood what was black's intention here before finegold could say, as in I'm probably around half the rating of these players and I expected it'd be a blunder on something hard to see for someone my rating, instead it was a pretty simple tactic.

NFD2 takes the kings knight away from the center and essentially undevelops the piece so I don’t think it’s very good but I’m a idiot what do I know

I’m sure it’s a playable move to get someone out of their prep. Doesn’t have to be the best move, just different and not immediately losing, which it obviously doesn’t.

bogo good enough in equalizing in your opinion beyond just reducing theory. Do you prefer the nimzo, QID, or Bogo-assuming the modern benoni is not a preference.
QID is dead at the higher levels ….correct. Always seems very closed and boring.
