1:41 You're probably wondering where that scene was from. That was from the Donkey Kong Country 1997 TV Series from Nelvana. Nelvana is a Canadian company who made cartoons such as Care Bears, Beetlejuice, 6Teen, such Canadian shows. You're probably asking: How come I've never seen this show before? I'm Canadian, & I know this show aired on Teletoon in Canada, & Fox Kids & Fox Family in America. Poor Americans. I wish Donkey Kong Country was more often aired on American Channels. This show should be aired on Discovery Family.
I like to think that Donkey Kong is more of a chaotic neutral anti hero type of character than an actual hero. All DK really cares about are three things. His bananas, his island, and more importantly, his family. Now his methods of protecting what he loves can be a little chaotic and sometimes extreme. For example when he rescues his friend Diddy from his imprisonment in the barrel in the games, instead of opening the barrel and getting him out, he throws it and breaks it. This could be dangerous and Diddy could have gotten hurt. Along with that he does sometimes cause some damage to happen in the enviroment he is in even when its not his intention. Like having rocks explode, trees fall, and sometimes getting other people killed (though in his defense they are all bad, so I guess he has a good reason). I think a good excuse for all the collateral damage DK does during his shenanigans is just that he is not smart. He is a literal ape after all so you can't expect him to have good IQ or even battle IQ like other famous Nintendo "heroes" like Mario or Link. Despite DK's short comings however including the ones in this video and the sequel, DK still has something to care for. It would be a far stretch to go as far and call him a villain. He still has love for his home and his people, his family. I mean he did save his father Cranky (who was DK I at the time) when he was captured by Mario in DK JR, and like I said earlier, he went as far as to free Diddy during his quest to take his bananas back instead of selfishly leaving him for dead, even if the way he did it was a bit rough. He also later saved his other friends in DK 64. Now as for DK island, that's literally his home. His home island is always being invaded by many annoying tribes or groups. The Kremlins, the Tikis, and the Snowmads. I mean, Donkey Kong and his friends and family would do anything to protect their home (I'm sure anyone would be willing to do anything to protect their home and their loved ones). Even if the methods end up being extreme and it means causing a lot of damage and maybe even deaths. Think of someone like Black Adam or Namor. They both have something to care about and protect (Black Adam has Kahndaq and Namor has Talokan (or Atlantis if you read comics)), so you can't just really call them dark and heartless villains who just want to kill and destroy for the fun of it. They have a reason for what they are doing, even if it ends up looking a bit harsh and extreme in the eyes of more morally right heroes like Superman for example.
That's how I see Donkey Kong honestly. He may be an idiot, he may be a little too mean, but in the end, he still has love and care. It would be a far stretch to just call him a villain.
Now before anyone comes at me and says "Hey! But what about him kidnapping Pauline, or what about the Mario vs Donkey Kong games?" Excellent question my fellow Nintendo nerds. Number one, that was Cranky, the first Donkey Kong. Now second, that one I will admit, DK was kind of a jerk in those games. The only excuse I can really say is that he is just an animal. He is not as smart as some would think. Other than the Mario vs DK games, I don't think Donkey Kong ever meant any evil. He just doesn't really care much about others. Just the three things he loves. His family, his home, and his bananas.
This is why I say he is a neutral. He never really cared about saving the world, nor destroying it. I mean, if he really was the heroic type, he probably would have gone far as to save other lands from other threats, like Bowser for example who is always invading the Mushroom Kingdom. If DK wanted, he could have gone there and helped Mario take down King Koopa. But no, he would rather stay on his island, feast on mountains of bananas, and chill with his best friend Diddy, and his father Cranky. The Mushroom Kingdom or anything else really is none of his concern. That's Mario's problem. Just another reason why he is neutral. He doesn't care about anything outside his home. But that doesn't mean he doesn't care about anything really.
So yes, some points in this video are correct, I will not argue with it. But at the same time, I wouldn't call DK the villainous type.

I get this is a joke, but the only reason DK hurts the enemies such as Mankey Kong (or however it's spelled) and the birds and beavers is NOT DK's fault, it's the player's.

Another reason why DK isn't a hero: In the game Donkey Kong(which got released in 1981), DK is the one who kidnaps Lady(Princess Peach)and Jumpman(Mario)has to rescue her from DK, so this proves that he isn't a hero.
The bananas are somehow different, ever notice how the insects and animals grew bigger from eating the superfruit of the island? Its because it is imperative that DK has this fruit so he can keep his strength up to keep fighting in wars. Even in the TV show we see bananas keep him stronger. He defends his family and fights for honor and glory, making him a hero.
