Massoud's answer, which included his analysis of Gulbuddin Hekmatyer, was not only valid and important for the time. It would prove true and critical many years later with the Taliban. Massoud's words are worth noting right now.

Hes been quoted as saying he wants a democracy and NOT a theocracy for the Afghan people. He withstood an invasion from the Soviet Union and the Taliban at the same time and won. He may be one of the few Afghan leaders who withstood corruption. Not to mention he was ASSASSINATED two days after 9/11. Funny coincidence internet people who cant critically think, use history, and apply politics to see that history itself is but a quorum of 'honest history'.

But when they supported hikmatyar more than him, he changed sides 🤷‍♂️. For me no one is a hero in the last 40 years of afghan war but only innocent afghans who have suffered and been through this pain of loss of their dignity and innocence.

Here’s a little historical perspective for all you Pakistan bashers.
    1) From the inception of Pakistan, to the soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Afghanistan held a belligerent posture towards Pakistan due to the Durand line. The king, Zahir shah, went as far as attacking and trying to capture an area in the then FATA TWICE.
    2) Keeping the first point in mind, the state of Pakistan did what ANY state would do, and has done, looked after its national interests. Masood along with hekmatyar were cultivated to first oppose the king and his brother who later deposed Zahir shah with Russian help.
    3) when pointing out that hekmatyar was isi’s go to guy, and masood was “independent”. That’s basically the crux of why hekmatyar was favoured, why in earth, would the isi prop up someone that couldn’t be controlled by them. That’s like saying the puppet regime of karzai and ghani shouldn’t have been supported by the US, instead the US should’ve put mullah Omer in charge.
