    • TrueNAS Scale 24: Plex...
    After hours of searching and finding countless threads and posts about how Plex won't see media after enabling SMB. I took it upon myself to get it working and made this video to show you how if you're having a similar issue.
    The same solution also applied to Jellyfin or other services.
    Right after I made this video, Jellyfin updated and no longer works with this. You MUST install Jellyfin to the default ix-applications directory or you will get transcoding issues and it will make you set the entire thing up from scratch.

    You're a lifesaver. After banging my head against a wall for most of the day trying to get Jellyfin to see my files correctly, I restarted installation using this video and everything works perfectly. Thank you!! EDIT: Like some others have commented, the latest Jellyfin update seems to create a "server not available" error when you try to log in again. The solution is to reinstall Jellyfin, but leave Config, Cache and Transcode paths as ixVolume defaults (part at 9:31). Additional Storage paths should be as per the video. You don't have to change any other TrueNAS settings outlined in the video, and don't forget to clear your browser/phone app cache to log in to Jellyfin after you reinstall.

    okay this did work and helped me figure things out. BUT:
    the folders you created are "POSIX" but I want to use "NFSv4" the media would not show up with NFSv4. after fiddling for a very long time (at least 20 hours total) I understand.
    I made a user "plex" with a certain UID and group and set permission of data set to allow it, and also set apps user and group, BUT it would still not show video files in plex app.
    What I did:
    start plex app
    go to TrueNAS console and type "ps aux"
    in the list find plex words
    on the very left will be its User
    for me plex was user "1000"
    I made a new user called plex with UID 1000
    gave it permission to dataset and it now works.
    owner can stay as root
    I hope this helps future strugglers.

    Holy crap. Straightfoward, accurate info. I've been struggling to get Plex running on my NAS for HOURS. I watched at least four other videos and read countless forum threads. This is the only info that actually helped. Thank you! Now, I just have to repeat those same steps with all the Servarr apps I need. :)
    EDIT: I just discovered that Jellyfin, unlike Plex, requires its files in the ix-application folder. If you try to direct all the application files to a "jellyfin" folder, it will hang at the "Deploying" phase and refuse to start up.

    FOR ANYONE DOING JELLYFIN
    This video was ALMOST everything I needed, but I was stuck on a really annoying problem I finally figured out thanks to trial and error.
    I fixed it with the following: As you are setting your host paths for Jellyfin, make sure to click "Enable ACL", and for each one select the path, and add a USER rule, and paste the user id you can find at the top of the page giving it full read write access. I spent literally 10 hours on this as a NAS illiterate so I hope this helps someone else.

Voila! Truenas app working great! But now of course everyone says to let the NAS be a NAS, and have a VM or CT do the compute for Plex. Luckily going this route set the correct permissions, and I was able to setup an NFS share and mount it within my ubuntu vm. Now my Plex can see my NFS share and added the media in from that way!

I have 150GB of music, with thousands of duplicate files, identical songs but with different names, sizes, and bitrates. Some of them lack metadata while others have it. I even have concert videos. Thanks very much for this guide. The checkbox under Apps/Settings/Advanced Settings did something really weird for me and two other apps that were running. Required a restart. Something about the kubernetes service. Doesn't make full sense to me, but just a warning to others that if you have existing apps, unchecking that box might result in weird stuff. A reboot of the TrueNAS server seems to have solved it, but briefly a little stress-inducing. :)

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 10 měsíci

      Correct. This is one of those things you don't want to do on a live server until it's fully set up before deploying it. When you start altering permissions, you will need to either shut down and restart apps and services or just reboot the entire server to make it easier. Once everything comes back online, the new permissions and service changes will take place normally, and from that point forward, you'll be good to go.

    At first thanks, it worked...kind of. I'm facing strange behaviour with your setup. If I setup the system it seems to work perfetctly fine. My Server A is sending the Video to my browser (B), or my FireTVStick (F) just as wanted...But!!!!!!!!! If i Shut down B or F and want to have acces to Jellyfin again it does not work. The login page of jellyfin (which shows me that Jellyfin is online) tells me there is no connection to the server??? huh? okay. Try again..no connection. The only way to get to jellyfin is to restart the Server A. If I do so I have to register again. The registered user is gone and I have to show Jellyfin where to finde the media again. And this happens again and again and again. Somehow Jellyfin does not store the created user and blocks every new attempt of connecting to it. Any Ideas?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před rokem

      This is likely an issue with the JellyFin update itself. This is why the JellyFin config is setup in a different DataSet so when updates happen, it's supposed to pull the old config from the DataSet. NextCloud does this as well and so far there is no fix yet

    • @Zeichentrick01

      @Zeichentrick01 Před rokem +1

      @@frozennorthproductions I was able to solve that problem. I don't know if this is new, but with your way there is a problem with the rights of storing the config files. There is an Error which tells me that there is a problem with writing in a folder which has only read acces. To solve the problem I had to skip the step of choosing my own host path for config, cache and transcodes and leave it with standard setting ixVolume. A Dataset called "ix-applications" is automatically created and stores this values. After I did so the server works like a charme!

      Try reinstalling Jellyfin in the default ixapplication directory. A lot of people are having issues after the latest update while using Jellyfin in its own DataSet. Legend! Ok this works on one pool but what if you have another media folder with Tv Shows etc in another pool but adding it to plex volume shares does not show up in Plex. It works on one pool but then trying on another nothing shows in Plex! So trying to add an identical pool on another drive is fine but adding a second media folder of Tv Shows etc does not show up in Plex at all no matter how you name or rename datasets or folders. Am I missing something?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 10 měsíci

      I'm not 100% positive on this but I'm pretty sure plex can only see what's on the pool it has permission to view. So if plex isn't installed on the other pool, the dataset will never have permissions from plex to be viewed because plex isn't on that pool. You would have to setup two plex servers on each pool and have one for movies and the other for TV shows like this.
      The best option is to keep it all in one. So a single pool is for plex and plex media only, and you can use a different pool for whatever else you wanna do.
      I just keep it simple and have everything in one pool so it's easier to manage. Once you get into multiple pools, it turns into a whole different animal of trying to problem solve

      Different Apps use different default users. Plex and Jellyfix use "apps" where as Nextcloud uses "www". I won't have it edited for a bit cause I'm still working out some other stuff but the basics of it is that you follow all of the same steps here, but ignore the host path safety check, and when adding the additional storage location on the Plex pod, you just pick SMB from the drop down list instead of Host Path. Name is like /SMB and you enter your server name "truenas.local" if you left everything as the default, and the share is whatever you named the SMB "Plex" for my example in this video.
      Within the Plex app, you set it up exactly as you normally do in this video but instead of finding that /Media directory, you look for a /SMB directory.
      You also don't need to change any of the data set permissions, only adding your user account to have full access so you can copy media to the SMB so it will show up in Plex.
      The same applies for Jellyfin. They're both setup identically and it's actually way easier to setup in this new version of TrueNAS.
      The alternative was you could just install TrueNAS 22, set it up the way it's done in this video, and once it's working, update to TrueNAS 24 and it remains working.

    How to cinfigure media folder if it is on another pool? Apps are on SSD and Media is on HDDs

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 10 měsíci

      Running the apps on an SSD doesn't really do anything for speed and you would actually see a MUCH better improvement using the SSD as a read cache for the HDD pool. Then you can have everything in one pool with like-ssd speeds.
      This is how mine is setup, 256GB SATA SSD for boot drive (smallest one I had on hand but a 32GB or 64GB is more than enough). Two 16TB HDD mirroring each other, and a 1TB NVMe as a read cache for the 16TB pool. I have been able to edit 4k video directly off of this without any noticeable difference compared to having the footage stored directly on my PC. Streaming video for Plex and Jellyfin would be even more efficient in this sense.

      This was made on Scale 22, and still works in Scale 23, but, as set up in 22. I haven't figure out where they put the host path safety check box in 23 but as of right now you can just set it up on 22, disable the host path safety check and then update to 23 and it still works fine.

      Yes, the exact same method. Just make sure your client that borrows movies from your best friend internet is set to the same permissions so it has write access to store them so Plex can auto refresh and see the dataset changes.

    I just wanted to comment on this since I tried this and it didn't work. It would work for a couple of minutes then there would be an error, related to transcoding I believe, and Jellyfin wouldn't be able to find the server anymore, prompting me to delete and re-create everything.
    In the end, I simply deleted everything related to applications/jellyfin and used ixVolume for the config, cache and transcode storage. For the additional storage, I did use Host path with my /media folder with the correct permissions. From there everything went smooth.

    Having some issues accessing the pool on my laptop. It’s pretty much read only.
    I have a second pool for photos that I have had for years and I can do anything I want in that pool. Maybe I will just add my username to the plex pool so I can add movies into that file share. Messed up somewhere but I should be able to figure it out.
    Also, when you launch the application I have been getting an error. The work around is to add /web at the end of the IP and port address. Example 10.10.1.10:32400/web

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 10 měsíci +1

      That's a bad server update error. Either the server didn't fully start up properly after an update, or the update installed incorrectly and you need to either reinstall the latest version of plex, or just delete the entire app and start over from scratch.

    Can you do a follow up video on how to access jellyfin from outside on mobile device?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 8 měsíci

      You need to port forward the port for JellyFin in your router. But because there's like a billion different routers, there's no way to make one video for every device. You just gotta look up what model you have and how to port forward, and then set that up with the port JellyFin uses, and you'll be able to access it from anywhere.

    Great clear video - my only issue is that new version of Truenas isn't quite the same and both of Plex and Jellyfin get stuck on Deploying - they go to run occasionally but the web portals wont open and they then return to deploying :(

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I believe this is a permissions issue if it lasts longer than a few hours. The first time the apps are deploying can take a long time because they're actually building the entire thing and setting it all up.
      For reference, mine is a Ryzen 5 5600G with 32GB 3600Mhz running on a 250GB SSD for the OS, and NextClous took about 3 hours to deploy for the first time.
      Plex and Jellyfin will also take a long time to deploy if the Media share has data in it already. For the sake of the video I did it with an empty share so it would deploy really fast, but if you have tons of movies and stuff it can take hours.
      If it takes too long, it could just be a permissions issue and the app just needs to be reinstalled

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 10 měsíci

      Yeah, this is just done with your router and has nothing to do with TrueNAS or anything. Plex uses port 32400, so if you log into your router, find a section for port forwarding or search your router model and how to port forward. And just open up port 32400 so that way Plex has access outside the local network. Then anyone can use your server and you can even register different emails and stiff to your account so each person has their own profile.

    Please do a next cloud one! this video was great!

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I've been working on it for a while now, and so far, I can't get it working because Nextcloud needs to be the owner of the share. Or at least "www" needs to be the owner of it. And you can't share a www owned share over SMB because the user will never have permissions over it. So you'll only be able to read files but never write. You would have to use the Nextcloud client in order to write.
      But after taking a step back to actually evaluate this and it's actually better this way when you think of other cloud storage providers. You never have SMB access to OneDrive or whatever. It's always cloud based, and that's literally what Nextcloud is trying to do.
      So the ideal solution is to set up Nextcloud and migrate the data being shared via SMB and access it like that instead. It's pretty much the same thing at that point once it's set up. As far as I know, the transfer speeds should be the same over a local network. It's only outside the house on a different network that will be limited by the internet download/upload speed. Which with a SMB, you wouldn't have had that option for outside network access anyway.
      I'm working on another video thing, still in the research phase, so I haven't even gotten close to starting on recording yet. But ideally, the end goal is that Plex media is the only SMB for drag and drop, and everything else is stored with NextCloud. And then use WireGuard to set up a VPN so when I'm outside of my own network. I can use WireGuard as a VPN to my home network and access Nextcloud as if I'm on my own local network. This way, Nextcloud never actually sees the outside world, so it ends up being even more secure than a paid cloud provider since you need the VPN (which is setup with a file for encryption from within the local network) or direct access to the local network by physically being on my wifi to even access the cloud.
      So far, nothing I said is working for me at all, lol. But that's my plan, at least, the direction I'm trying to go.

      I think there's a setting in Plex WebUI to enable DLNA, for me it was on automatically. I was working on a PS3 and after plugging in ethernet, my entire Plex library just showed up on it's own and I was able to stream movies and stuff straight on the PS3 without needing the Plex app or anything. It just kinda worked right out of the box.
