    As an owner operator of two FX9, I agree with you. However as a freelancer that works on broadcast projects I need the IO options, better shoulder position and most important ability to use my PL Super 35mm lenses in s35 crop UHD.

      Thanks for your feedback ☺️ yes I also agree there are jobs and situations when the design and functionality of the fx9 is very handy.

      Hopefully picking up a used fx9 for about same price as a new fx6 tomorrow. I usually dont do tv broadcast work but still find the small quirks on the fx6 annoying. Like: top handle xlr (that breaks) No S35 mode. No locking e-mount for bigger lenses. If I was a slowmo person i would probably complain though… 😉 like your take on the camera anyway. Keep it up!

      I was under the impression that the FX-9 is more for Television/journalism & broadcast work and most of that would be captured at 24FPS? No?

    Being able to use super35 lenses in 4K is another huge perk of the FX9.

    Please note with last upgrade this year the FX9 can now shoot in Full frame 5K 60fps. It is then down sampled to 4k full frame 60fps. Just used this 2 times this week and it is great.

    I see the arguments that on paper FX6 is better but it is more complicated than that. Yes it has better low light, lower price, more compact body, better frame rates and if any of this matter to you yea... go with FX6. But FX9 is still a superior camera... it was made by the Alta division meaning it has the Venice color science, true 4k color resolution (due to 6K oversampling), professional shoulder operation, broadcast IO, 1st party extension unit for V-mount batteries, wireless systems etc, support for B4 lenses in Super16 mode. There is a LOT that this camera offers that FX6 will just never do. Not to mention it looks more professional. The only thing I really miss on it is Cache Recording in S&Q mode, which FX6 can do. I hope they add this one day in a Firmware update.

    I own a FX6, and I rented a FX9 during one week for a commercial documentary, and I wish I went with the FX9... Except the fact it doesn't have 100fps in full frame, everything in the FX9 is better (image quality, IO, heavier so better with handheld shots, shoulder ready, evf, xlr ports in the body, S35 mode, true dual ISO,...). One advice to all of the viewers on CZcams, don't listen the reviews! I blame myself for doing so...Everyone has different needs, so test it (rental) by yourself before making any decisions..

    i own a FX9 and it gives a better 4K image than the FX6. For your stereotypical slo-mo b-roll that everyone shoots I use the FX3. Now I do wish I had dual recording like the FX6/3, but i use an external recorder(Odyssey 7Q+). The FX9 is for slightly higher end productions. The FX6 is a fine camera, but the FX9 looks alot better.

  • @twesttv

    I own the 9 and the 6 and love them both. If you put them side by side the FX9 has a better image. Sharper and richer look. They both can do things the other can't, just depends on what you need. I use the 9 for beautiful broadcast interviews and the 6 to fly on a gamble and B cam to the 9. I use the Tilta cage on the 9 so I can sit it on a table no problem but not cheap. Good points in your video.

    For a short commercial we shot with the fx9 and fx6 at the same time. We ended up not using the fx6 images because it did not have that full cinematic fullness in the image the fx9 has.
    But the fx6 is a fine looking camera and if we would bot have shot with the fx9 we would have probably be ok with it.
    But just comparing it side by side makes you see the differance.

      Totally agree with you! I own a FX6 and rented a FX9 for a big commercial (doc style), and I loved it! I wish I went with the FX9, I shouldn't have listen all those CZcamsrs, because the image quality is much better (much more details and organic at the same time, it doesn't have the clinical look of the FX6 and FX3).

  • @robinprobyn1971

    different cameras for different jobs , ability to have a 4k digital crop is as handy as having the high frame rates on the fx6 , I'd say its more use . Fx6 is a music video camera , fx9 is a doc camera , what ever you work the most in just buy whats best

  • @nealhope6127
    @nealhope6127 Před rokem +2

    This review is good for those just starting and moving from a mirrorless body to a bigger camera.
    The fx6 wins on frame rates, but not much else.
    Two SDI outs
    Timecode options
    Stronger built quality
    More fine controls
    Separate card slot for proxy workflow
    Wireless proxy upload.
    Control
    It’s just a more professional camera.
    Though I love the fx6, it’s light weight quick has that beautiful slowmo but not being able to record in s35 in 4k is tough.
    Speaking of s35 mode I’ve notice even though you’re in s35 mode on the fx9 you still get the full frame bohek.
    The true dual base ISO is in a great range between 800-4000.
    As an owner operator of this camera, has paid for itself times over since 2020.
    The fx9 has a better image as well. It had a more refined look because of the 6k downsampling.
    I’ve worked with all the line so far, and prefer the fx30 and the fx9.
    I love the crop I get with the full frame lenses in interview settings.
    I also like that fx30 for the wides as well
    Less bokeh for showing off nice locations as well through interviews.
    All the cameras are great, choose the ones that compliment your work.

    Hello Paule! I actually was thinking between the two. I should say I never rented any of those and only used Sony A7R.
    But it seemed to me that the FX9 has just much cleaner and more professional looking image, even with the FX6 ProRes option. I don't think I want to buy a Sony Venice or RED Raptor.
    And my thoughts were that if I want to try and make a documentary that will be able to be shown on theatres and film festivals, I'm not sure if the FX6 will hold as good on a big screen

      @pauleporterdp  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for your thoughts Ron.
      I never shot side by side with an FX9 or an fx6 but used them on different projects.
      Personally I like the image of the fx6 more although I prefer 10 out of 10 times the image out of a c70 c300 or c500
      The thing that I don’t like is that Sony always looks very digital and not as organic as that canon cinema line

    Depemds on the work you do. If you're just a videographer and work as a prod company selling to other businesses as a one man band then yes. FX9 image quality is better. I shoot with two and an FX3 and the image looks quite a bit different. FX3 and 6 looks like your standard miorrless and have problems with miore. The 9 had added pro features like the scan modes, ECS, more and better I/O and significantly better build quality as well as ready to shoulder op out of the box. If you're a shooter like @CrankyCameraman, work for network or shoot with crews, the FX9 is a better buy.

      @@pauleporterdp What’s your opinion? Very curious about FX9 sensor vs Komodo’s image

    • @nealhope6127
      @nealhope6127 Před rokem +1

      if the sensor is white balanced so that the gain of the red green and blue channels matches the light in the scene then any so called monochromatic white highlights will clip all channels simultaneously, don't forget we get white when red, green and blue are the same. Coloured highlights will clip the different channels differently, for example a red highlight will clip red first. But if you then add blue or green or reduce the red to "recover" the red highlight you will change its hue or saturation and it will not be correct. So highlight recovery is only successful with white highlights and white highlights are not an issue for a correctly white balanced sensor as all channels will clip together. Highlight recovery is limited by the performance of the sensor and can never exceed what any individual colour channel can deliver, as a result it does not increase the DR, it merely compensates for issues caused by using the sensor at a fixed with balance, something red have been stuck with since the Red One. Arri and Sony do not have this issue to worry about. - Alister Chapman.

      same boring "color science" opinion. Canon's colors and images aren't that great cause of its over saturation and let's be real they aren't in a cinema race for anything high budget. Red is cool but user experience with start up depending if you're doing commercial or documentary work is fucking terrible with insane boot up times. And what kills me is that this day and age you can color grade anything to look like any camera. Especially if you're shooting in the flattest log profile.

I don't care what brand label is on the front of the camera. I care about image. If you're happy with what you got then you shouldn't feel the need to defend your choices.
